#53556, "Ethelle Illustraer"
Edited on Wed 20-Dec-06 03:37 AM

Wow. What a round that was. This was my second real character (the first was an assassin which I had no idea how to use, and deleted pretty soon after reaching hero). Lots of good times, lots of memories. I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions regarding my RP. Don't even mention PKing, though...I knew this char would suck for that when I chose my focuses.
Special thanks to: Itholin-we really did have some great times...my oath on your "deathbed" made for some fun (good?) roleplaying. Lord Corrlaan-That diamondback would have been next to useless to the fortress without altruism. As it was, it had some pretty useful moments. Lady Lauraine-I always missed the time spent together when you were still mortal...especially your quirky sense of humor. Lady Rayihn-for your willingness to RP in the few situations we spoke.
Tiatan/Meora/Tsyda/Linerasas-for the times I was able to play at negotiation and matchmaking...I'll never forget that one time in the desert with tsyda, and tiatan wanting to kill me...heh.
Most others in the fortress I interacted with...the list is really too long to even start attempting, starting with Dynestai and ending with Elleinia. Thanks for the great RP opportunities, Elleinia.
Chaisse/Eoal/Lexicus-I really enjoyed the time I was able to spend with each of you, even if you hated each other...hehe.
Can't forget Lyristeon...playing hot potato with a bunch of mere mortals!
other than that...
Empire/Scions for the nearly everpresent threat...espcially at the end. Oh, and regarding the rot, Draktel...even with heaps of gear to raise my vitality, my constitution at the end would never go higher than 19 (not enough to survive the rot). Maybe because I was more than two centuries old?
Villagers-you were a bit of a threat at the beginning, but only until I got a firm grasp on how to use my forms properly. After that.. Well, no offense, Drakgrak, but the fact that you managed to kill me when i was wearing next to nothing, was out of form, and had just written my own requiem really didn't impress me too much, either with RP or PK ability. Frankly, I'm surprised it took you so many tries.
P.S....The diamondback is the best form ever (at least, better than all the forms I've met)! Never been defeated by any other shifter forms...and that wasn't just equipment, Cortland and Tiatan.

Damn, I really enjoyed our few conversations. You were one of the few people who would actually take the opertunity that I presented to people and roleplay with me, instead of just saying something about I'm not scared of you, or your evil and I will have nothing to do with you and then go quiet on me (which is really frustrating in a roleplay Mandatory mud) even when I would take absolutely nothing but the coins on their corpse. We never really fought though, just the one time I withered you at the maran and then you said you had better things to do and then those better things ended up being speaking with me for about a half hour or hour, hahah. Classy though and enjoyable.

In response to Reply #0

As everyone knows I've been busy with holidays and haven't had much time to post these goodbyes so here I am trying to catch up.
A good character with a fairly good sense of what you wanted to accomplish. Although I'll give you a small piece of advice RE coming to my shrine to be my follower when your not of my sphere.
If your going to come up with a 'unconventional' angle to something like that. Just play it. Don't come asking my advice how to play it. Just do it. If you fail, you essentially lose nothing. If I notice you, and like it. I'm going to drum up some creativity on my end and give you the immteraction you deserve.
And the other half of that is. And this goes for virtually anyone. If you come up with a great idea/role/concept. PLAY IT LOUD! Write notes, preach your cause, get others to join you. The biggest compliment you can get is for other people to start talking about you. "Oh yeah...thats the dwarf with no left leg. He sure does kick some ass" Obviously a joke..but still. Don't sit there with your role all tucked neatly in your role pocket. And simply play like any other character. Of course..this doesnt work for Deception characters..but I dont watch those too often. I guess what Im saying is make your presence and personality known far and wide, and you'll start seeing more rewards for it. Corrlaan followers are NICE. With a capital NICE!

Ethelle was very laid back and fun. i enjoyed our trips through various area explore and its a shame that your not around now for the demon brothers saga we could really use you and we have been having more fun trips into crazy places.
Good luck with yout next.

Any thoughts on my one piece of literary work? It was published posthumously...I had to talk to several bards on my death bed to get it published. I did actually write it a bit before I died, though.

Well-nearly everyone Ethelle found joy in spending time with had moved past mortality, in one way or another. She'd (I'd) always given, and died a goodly number of times for it. Towards the end of her life, she really did feel empty. Especially since the little incident with someone in the fortress taking the fetish drove Chaisse and her a little further apart...
Basically, I wanted to explain that part of Ethelle's role was that she really didn't have any ulterior motives. She really was trying to act out of altruism...though she occasionally failed.

Good times, I enjoyed this character a lot. We stuck together a bunch, didn't we?
Pity we couldn't kill dragons for crap. =P
Diamondback + Altruism = best improvised healer class ever! Uhuahuahua~~~ I do believe we kicked some ass, and the only reason we kicked some ass was because you took all my maledictions and damage.
I liked your character a lot, glad to see that new players are still coming around CF.
Play something less boring than a shifter. Seriously, I can't even imagine ranking to 51 without being able to talk in form. I'd commit Seppuku or something.

I know I made all kinds of promises and things(to take you to places and help you when I was "older") that I never were able to fulfill. I apologize for basically disappearing, but I suppose those things happens when you lose interest and just hope the interest peeks back up. Its been a while since we last interacted, and everything, so hopefully you remember me
Anyway, from the little I did see you, I suspect you were somewhat new(though, for whatever reason, I knew it wasn't your first hero) but, yet, you did well enough and you did get better(and hopefully the minor things that I did tell you about did help in the long run...and if not, my bad). Thank you for helping me rank for a bit(I don't like ranking, at all, I just want to get to hero as fast as possible, unless my interest drops, as it did). And good luck with your next, if there is one.

It's cool, I understand. To be honest, there was a period when I didn't log on for a while either. Yes the minor things did help. It was a bit quirky for RP to have this younger character come up to this old lady and start telling her where to find gear to survive the rot but I appreciated it.

Assuming we ever get a cardinal/prophet/marshall/captain, I'll be back for another round in the fortress sooner or later. At the moment, most of the imperials/scions RP just too well (I hope they don't all actually have the personalities they play...that'd be scary)...so well that sometimes I have to grimace just listening to them. To far outside of me at this point of time for me to even contemplate seriously attempting a char in those two cabals.

Not dead yet, indeed. Hmm, I'm not really sure what to say about Ethelle. I never really got to know her, despite how it would seem otherwise. She was nice, but Tiatan didn't agree with a lot of her views and oftentimes thought her very naive, not that he thinks all that much better than himself, but he kind of viewed her as a lost puppy or a child at times. Keep in mind, this is not my saying anything against Ethelle. I really liked Ethelle, but Tiatan's a bit odd. Anyways, you did well, and I know you'll continue to make quality characters in the future. Good luck with your next. "On ne fait pas de musique contre quelqu'un"

Naive? Perhaps. That was who she was. Think the best of someone or some situation until time proves otherwise.
A child? In many ways. There are still huge parts of Thera I haven't even started to explore in depth.
Yes, despite all the time we spent together, I don't know that we really got to know each other all that well. Ah, well.

I loved your character, after the desert when we first met Tsyda looked up to you and Meora as she was only 17 at the time. I was really pleased that you stayed around to talk 'woman to woman' and didn't just deliver a message and take off. I am a little sad you won't be around anymore but at least we got to travel together for some questy stuffis.

I saw you as a threat at first when I was playing Malic. I usually went all out to destroy any enemy birds. You and Tiatan were targets numero uno. I figured you were maran. I picked on you a bit then you made acolyte and I started hearing good stuff about your roleplay, ect. I tried a bit in game to interact with you but it was hard because of the oposing alignments and all that...
Would have been fun to play a shifter along side of you in fortress. That place is a hall of tools of late. Play a scion and you can experience some challenges, both in roleplay and pk.
Take care.

I'll admit, I always groaned when I saw you around. Under most circumstances, I wasn't too worried about fighting you...my forms were pretty useful (the one time you managed to kill the majestic eagle I was bound with a number of maledictions, if you weren't aware). But...you certainly made it much more difficult to get where I wanted to go and help people in a hurry...
Heh. I was never really interested in fighting you, but you were the only one who made me groan when I woke up. No-one else could or would chase me up into the skies.

19 is racial max con for a half-elf. It's plenty high to survive rot; I've done it plenty of times with elves and dark-elves (16 racial max con.)
The idea is that the +con gear replaces/counteracts the con you're losing over the course of the rot, such that you never drop to 3 before the rot wears off.

Thanks for reminding me of how the system works...I feel so...very...bright.

Hey! No deleting! Ergh! Well, I enjoyed our times together. Acolyte rattlesnakes are very nice. Overall, I thought Ethelle was a bit too eager to call Chaisse "sister", especially with the differing views, so that's why she never returned the sentiment. You were a good friend and I knew we could always go exploring together. I'm sorry we didn't get to go to that one place you kept wanting to go. A lot of times, when I logged on, I wouldn't have enough time to devote to a really long expedition. Good luck with your next!

Of course, and I'm really not surprised that you didn't call me sister back. that was just who the character was...try to build good relationships with everybody who was willing.
After all, how can you positively influence a person without any form of relationship? And everyone needs positive influence...especially Ethelle (needed, I suppose).

I killed you? When? How? You fled from me. Or I fled. I dont remember which. Maybe the last fight was when you were a diamondback. No way you died to the poison then. So, how did you die?

First off, please don't take this the wrong way. I'm going to try to be constructive about what I post here.
The only interaction I had with this character left a really bad taste in my mouth. You were a big reason I haven't had anything in the fortress for a couple of months now(and I really only ever play fortress characters).
On to the good stuff. I hope you remember this incident. It happened while you were a scribe, and seeing how this was your second character I suppose I can see why you did it. We took an afternoon and went ranking in the mines of sitran. I think you were 47 at the time and I was a 42(maybe 43) warrior. Anyway, as we killed mobs at the bottom of the mines, a rager showed up, and a scarab poisoner thief. I think the group consisted of me(the warrior), you(The diamonback, and a muter maybe. As soon as the four guards at the entrance cried out you fled. Before I could even hit a where from one of spec moves you were gone and out of the area. That left me and the muter to fend for ourselves while you were the tank. I think I managed to retreat away from the mobs we were fighting at about a quarter of my health. Got lucky knocking the villager out and suffered a mob death getting the muter out of the mines. I really don't mind eating mob deaths. The thing that bugged me the most about it was the way you handled the situation. You fled out and got out of the mines leaving your good aligned groupmates to die. Thats not the behavior of an acolyte and for that I could never really take you seriously. Another thing that bugged me about the interaction was the way you handled it afterward, saying you would have died to the rager if you had stayed, but the truth of the matter is? We likely could have killed the mob before the rager even made it to us had you stayed, and our chances for survival in a 3 on 1 pk situation would have been pretty decent. Instead you took your own selfish path and caused people to die. I'll chalk it up to inexperience I guess.
It wasn't all bad. I met your characters with a few recent ones I've played and you were very kind to me. But that one incident soured me for the most part, and I could never take your title or position seriously for the simple fact that I didn't think you understood what it meant.
This probably sounds a little harsh and I apologize for that. For a second character this is quite a feat and its very impressive. I'd like to try to stress though for future situations that you reflect on how your character would act in their role as far as those types of situations are concerned.
Good Luck on your next character.
I remember the group now. It was with Valkran(me) and Amariele.

Bear in mind, I don't have any information but that which you provided, so this is all just a guess, or a first impression.
And you know more about the situation than I do. But it is pretty common for a mage to word like that when a battlerager comes after a group. The thought is that the villager came there for them, and if they leave, the villager's reason for being there will be gone as well. I did a search on the class of Amariele and found she was a bard. This isn't bad rp, particularly in that to get out of the mines, she would have had to run right by the villager, likely leading him away from the group. Further, for an acolyte, it seems reasonable that they would seek to avoid a fight even if they have a good chance of winning it.
As I said, I wasn't there and didn't see the situation, but this is just the first impression I get from the information that you gave.

Well I don't think you understand his point, that being she was the tank of the group and just by fleeing from there while they were already in combat with mobs was what caused him to die. That being left at 1/4 health and having to try and flee the mines from a possible pk. There was 2 aggressors mentioned, a rager and a scarab, I would conclude they were not only after her.
Either way I thought Ethelle was a fun character, and certainly well done for someone who admittedly was new.

Unfortunately...sometimes people don't listen to hissing and screeching and such...It is possible I forgot to give warning in this circumstance, but I do my best to give several moments warning before leaving combat. In general, I did my best to be the last person in combat before leaving, if at all possible.
Very likely that I screwed up in this instance. It's unfortunate that it left a sour taste for so long, and I'm sorry about that. I'm also sorry you weren't able to believe that her title was deserved. Frankly, with the number of times I died for other people...and the sheer quantity of blood I gave other people...Ethelle deserved at least the title.

I do remember the situation you speak of...and I do remember your criticisms that day.
I am sure I did not respond in the best manner possible...certainly not as a squire or maran should have. Probably not as an acolyte should have. But...
At the time, I had my doubts as to whether we could indeed manage to take them or not. Looking back, I'd not be at all surprised if my doubts were correct. Probably a full half of my deaths occurred because I listened to somebody when they said, "hey, we can take them." Usually this would be a maran, and I would decide to support them, against my better judgement. I don't hold that against them...but...certainly there are wiser things for me to do than throw myself into just any battle.
As to whether I knew what the title meant? I don't know which other characters you played later on, but there were a number of circumstances where I died as a result of taking individuals' maledictions upon myself and giving them all of my health. Repeatedly. There was the time when I flew into a city where someone was bound with a number of maledictions (I can't remember who all was attacking her. I think there were three of them). I took all of her maledictions upon myself, she fled, and I flew high. I was unable to move anywhere because I was bound, and because of the maledictions and having given half of my health away, Malic made easy meat of me. The funny thing is I realized I was pretty likely to die when I went in.
Again, in that one instance when I was a scribe, you might very well be right. But...give people the benefit of the doubt, I'd say if they actually care about improving.
And always give the shifters in combat the benefit of the doubt they can't talk in battle, so aside from screeching and hissing (as I did, which can be easily ignored) there isn't a whole lot they can do.

Eh, you're right! I meant to. I guess simply missed it and later thought i had written that part.
Additional thanks to: Lord Farigno, for telling stories, providing some interesting interaction with Lryisteon and Lauraine, and keeping the Fortress up to date with what was going on.

How does anyone forget about me? This was a great character and to me exemplified what an Acolyte should be. Somehow I always ended in the middle of things with you.

Heh. Thanks. And...good work on all the demon thingies! There was some mistrust in the Fortress regarding whether we should be working with...nexans (untrustworthy and shady characters as you are ), but I really appreciated your help and knowledge.

Heya !
I really enjoyed hanging around with you (except last night, but I was already kinda bitchy IC for something else) and Itholin. I actually befriended him first, but I took to you moreso. I suppose because you took to me, like you were my big sister (giggling about an outfit for your date...).
I tried to play the little sister, even though there were some things I was showing you instead...but you played it well, and really seemed to soak up any info I gave you.
I was hoping you and Itholin would adopt me, but he kicked it, and then I didn't get to spend much more time with you either...
I'm glad I got to know you.
See ya !

Sorry that I kicked it. I am glad that you showed me a few things. Eventhough they were not as useful later. It was good to know about them for a while. I had fun, but I was usually too busy running around getting beaten up to talk with you much.
I'm sorry that I didn't mention you in my farewells. I was really tired. XD

There are limitless things that can be done through the use of emotes. As long as what you are doing with them fits your roleplay, then they are perfectly fine.
What I am saying is... that thing that pertained to Itholin and you that you hinted you wanted immortal help with, you could have pulled off by yourself. Though, just to let you know, I did ask four or five people if they would be willing to help out from the Immteraction end, but that particular request just wasn't something that a lot of people are going to be willing to do.
I'll sum it up with this. Your character should be able to accomplish just about anything through roleplay, and any Immteraction should be considered an added bonus. I mean, look at all of the stuff I've been managing to pull off in interactions in the quest, and really, I don't have much more to work with than you do to help me roleplay. I'm just saying this: Your imagination is the limit, when it comes to roleplaying, and I think you have a pretty good imagination.

Actually, I have seen what she was thinking in the way you describe before. We could have easily done so but I was not thinking about that.
I also knew I would be dying soon... so there would be very little roleplay involved in it on my part... I doubt Ethelle would have wanted to continue it alone for long.
