Chapter 8

Now that Nikravnek has found a place in the wolfrunners pack, shown how
to harvest natures bounty and live better off the land he seeks to rid all links
to his past as a rich merchants son. He chose himself a new name, one to
replace the man he was and leave others wondering, fearful of the man who
owns it. He chose the name Kinkraevn as it is still him but an improved
version. His last name he will derive from his final beasts that emerge as
the name Devillier should die by his hand and what better way than by the
teeth and claws that emerge from him. It tells those who wonder that he
is part beast, a wolfrunner and a dreamwalker.

Chapter 7

Nikravnek awoke among the branches of the refuge and sensed an ill feeling
in the tree. The fetish of bone had been taken and was among the lawmen.
He was quick to rise and bring it back with a yellow scroll of magical aid.

During the hunt for the captain and the fetish, a plunderer by the name of
Jaqusa, a shadow-fighter fought against him to try and prevent the release
of the fetish. Nikravnek managed to send him fleeing and regained the
fetish, but this was one of many attempts that Jaqusa had made on him
since he started wandering these lands.

The shadow-fighter Jaqusa showed his real allegiance when Nikravnek
awoke again to the anguish of the refuge as the scions of eternal night
had taken the fetish. This time Nikravnek took down the Jaqusa and gorged
himself on the flesh that remained. The rest he returned to the earth where
it will go some way to returning what has been plundered.

With blood still in his mouth Nikravnek wandered among the forest of spider
haunt and came across a totem, similar to others he had seen in Arendyl and
the udgaardian plains. He felt drawn to it and reached out to touch it, but
as he did so he was bitten by it and was struck down as poison scaled his
veins, venom creeping in from the totem, through his arm, into his chest and
towards his heart. His toes curled in agony, his fists clenched and his teeth
began to gnaw each other down. He could feel the poison inch towards his
heart, its beating growing slower yet louder until he thought it would explode.

His vision turned black as an ancient voice spoke to him of his future.
It saw in him the spark of ancients long since passed and hee saw
visions of fires sweeping across the cities, destroying the weak and
purging the lands of the tainted. Mercy to none or the venom that flows
now in his veins will consume him.
Nikravnek awakens as if he had slept for a century but aware of the burning
and itching of his blood. His hunger felt like his stomach gnawed on his
back bone. He needed to feed and feast on nature's bounty.

Chapter 6

Nikravnek had seen the outlander men, the wolf runners as they were called,
so after his uneasy dreams, visions, whatever they were he sought out the
darkest of them, Korgosodom. He spoke with him of his desire to bring down
the cities, the economy of the weak and to lay to waste those men which have
grown powerful, yet soft and to have his revenge on all those who turned from
him.

The giant asked him of survival and hunting and travelling the less chosen
path and thanks to Nikravnek squalid existence he could speak of scavenging
hunting and avoiding the cities. The giant extended him a branch and brought
him into the refuge, blooded and scent marked as one of them. Nikravnek
felt stronger in himself and the beast inside him growled in satisfaction.

Chapter 5

A week since he spoke with his mother in his dream, Nikravnek made a
decision to die and be reborn. Nikravnek would die and Kinkraevn would
step forth to wreak havoc on the cities and feast upon their blood and ashes.

Kinkraevn kept eating the mushrooms that allowed him to dreamwalk until
he got better control of his ability and laughed into the darkness on the night
he could form a beast in both realms. A feral pig seemed fitting to a man who
cannot ever seem to satiate his hunger or slake his thirst. Even as a beast his
gluttony is there for all to see for there is no reason that the destruction of the
cities cannot bring joy to his belly the happiness that comes from the rising
gorge from feasting on the flesh of prey.

He has seen the outlander men, the wolf runners as they are sometimes called
when he was young, as they attacked many of his father's plantations and city
holdings. Maybe he could find a place among them.

Chapter 4

Days and weeks passed and Nikravnek got by, catching rats, mice and insects.
He would forage for what he needed and bask in the sun, shelter in caves from
the rain and lived like a near animal. He would dream of a beautiful land that
ran with the blood of all the city folk he now despised. The fauna and flora
would help sustain him until he could rise again from the blood and ashes of
the cities.

He would often awake miles from where he had fallen asleep. A sleep when
he dreamed of running in this new world like a beast of the forest.

One night after he had eaten some snake, soft bark and mushrooms he lay by
the river and drifted in and out of sleep. Then he saw her, a vision of beauty
standing naked, but for water covering her body like clothing. Her hair waved
in the still air and her eyes were black like limpet pools of time. She spoke to
him saying 'I am a dreamwalker Nikravnek and I have missed you these long
years, only watching my son from his dreams, but never daring to speak unless
I frighten you never to dream again.'
Nikravnek was stunned. This woman is his mother?
'How can you be my mother, she is dead?' he half asked, half stated.

She smiled and spoke again 'I did not die from the fall on the horse, but
instead I slept too deeply for the healers to rouse me and live my life in the
world of dreams, free of cities and beasts like your father. I was a possession
of his, a trophy without love, wanted only for others to admire and to provide
him with an heir. I could not stand to live a captive life even with my love for
you, my son. The city men who hurt you, hurt me too but worse than that they
hurt the mother earth, ripping her open and pillaging her bounty with relish.

'Use your hatred of them to bring the cities down, find inside you the little
power you inherited from me' Nikravnek interrupted 'What Power?'
and she smiled sympathetically 'You wake often miles from where you sleep?'
Nikravnek nodded, 'And you dream of running like a beast in the forest?'
Nikravnek nodded again, 'This is your power Nikravnek, you have the spark
of a dreamwalker in you, a shapeshifter some call them, but it is a power that
you can learn to control and bring the city men to their knees before gutting
them'.

The last words spoken were acidic enough to cut through steel but as
Nikravnek tried to ask one last question a huge roar pulled him from his sleep.
He awoke with a start, and the taste of blood in his mouth. A dead rabbit lay at
his feet, its throat ripped out. Nikravnek looked to the mushrooms he had left
in his pocket and then to the rabbit. Confusion was written all over his face.

Chapter 3

Nikravnek lived the high life, unconcerned with the business as long as it was
there and churning out the money he needed to have the wine, woman and
wonders that Thera had to offer. He appointed a Gilbert Trasck to deal with
all sides of the business and during that time, embarked on an affair with
Trascks beautiful wife and daughter. The months passed like days in his drink
and drug induced stupor with woman after woman's faces blurring into one.


It was on the eve of his nineteenth birthday that he was to be betrayed and
born to rags. Unbeknownst to Nikravnek, Trasck and his wife were unpicking
all the legal loopholes that left Nikravnek as head of the business. Nikravnek
had over the last few months, signed anything Trasck put before him and
trusted 'The old fool' completely. Trascks wife made sure Nikravnek's head
was always turned so that he would never notice what was going on.

He decided to throw a Grande party and invite all the nobles, merchants and
people of importance. He knew they would come, after all, he had more
money than them.

Sure enough, they all came and the music was expensive, the outfits even
more so. The food was exquisite, and everyone danced and Nikravnek loved
being in the centre of it all. So many women around him, all of which he
had had some sort of fling with, their husbands, all boring and stuffy, had no
idea as he mingled and chatted with them all. Then the music stopped and
and Trasck asked for the 'birthday boy' to come to the centre of the room.

Trying to look humble, something Nikravnek was never very good at, he made
his way to Trasck. As he approached him, Trasck struck him with a stinging
blow to the face that sent him reeling. He got back to his feet shakily and
screamed at Trasck 'You're Fired! You will pay dearly for this!' to which
Trasck smirked and replied 'Oh I don't think so young man, there is no one
to fire me, I own my own business now', he held up a parchment with the
deeds to his fathers trading company and Nikravnek felt another blow but this
one hurt much deeper.

Trasck started to laugh and motioned for two of his heavies, who grabbed
Nikravnek and began to drag him out of the room. Nikravnek screamed for aid
from any of his society friends but they all turned their back, spat on him or
sniffed disdainfully at him. The chant rose around the room 'Get the Rubbish
Out!, Get the Rubbish Out!'.

Nikravnek was flung from his own home into the muddy gutter where the
vagrants and beggars all stripped him of what little possessions he
still had. He was too stunned and numb to fight back and he did not see
Trascks carriage as it trundled past him, knocking him into a bramble patch
where he passed out, blood trickling from a hundred cuts as he slept.
Born now to rags, was Nikravnek.

Chapter 2

Some years later, Nikravnek was now sixteen and his father was ill with the
blood-lung. His father spoke to him of his responsibility for the business and
how he must stop chasing skirts and secure his own future. Like most young
men Nikravnek nodded agreeably and appeased the old mans worries. A hack,
a gurgle and a death rattle later and Nikravnek was without his father. He shed
not one tear over the man.

The usual proceedings took place, Grande funeral, lawyers of the estates come
to offer their condolences but more to the point, to appoint Nikravnek the head
of the trading company and all the family wealth. He could not have been a
happier man than if he had awoken to find he had two appendages. I will have
the life I wish and the fancies I like to indulge in all that I should desire.

So full of sin was Nikravnek, pride, rage, greed and vanity that he failed to see
how like his father he was and all he saw was the wealth that would allow him
to feed his gluttonous habits and not what was actually going on around him.

Chapter 1

Born to plenty, never wanting for anything, Nikravnek Devillier was the son
to a wealthy merchant. His father, Oscar, was born a poor man and by his own
wits, cunning, guile and not to mention a few odd deaths of business partners,
has made his mark on the world and amassed a fortune to which Nikravnek is
the only heir. Oscar had acquired a beautiful wife when trading in the far north
and brought her back with his newest line of merchandise to sell. She was a
dark skinned woman who was said to have strange powers, but that was just
jealous locals talking, so Oscar said. She gave Oscar what he wanted, a son to
inherit his legacy and to keep the name of Devillier alive and so even after she
died in a riding accident, Oscar did not lose too much sleep over it.

Nikravnek was about 5 years old at the time and missed his mother terribly so
Oscar did the only thing he knew how. He threw money at is and he bought a
nanny to tend to his sons every need, but it was not the tending to that Oscar
had intended and so, by the time Nikravnek was 14 the nanny had slept with
him and taken his eye, filled his head with flights of fancy, sorcery and other
such debauchery.

When Oscar found out that his son had been turned into a Jack-dandy and
risked being the talk of the city he banished the woman and beat Nikravnek in
his rage. 'She is a bloody animal!' he yelled as Nikravnek cowered beneath
every blow that was delivered with each word. So Nikravnek's hate grew.
