Chapter 2

And that was how I came to be a warrior.

I don't really consider myself a saurian. I didn't grow up in the village,
and I didn't learn about all the Sra and Weh stuff like they do. But, I think
I must have some natural inclination toward Weh, because I feel myself
spiraling downward toward my eventual death every day. In fact, that's how
most things go. Wrong. Although death doesn't seem all that wrong. In fact,
it seems like a chance to be reborn as anything other than a lizard. So maybe
it's just something to look forward to.

Back to tasting mana in the air, it's something I started to notice more and
more. And, if it's good to spiral down to your eventual death - magic seems
like a way to interrupt that. It isn't good to break the Cycle of life and
death, I wouldn't think. So that's how I know magic is bad. And maybe that's
why mana tastes gross on the air.

So, I have decided to become a battlerager, even though I'm a pathetic
warrior. I have to do something with my time, and there are lots of rocks in
the village to sun myself on. They keep telling me to build a hut, not sleep
on the rocks, but I'm bad at carpentry on account of I'm a lizard.

I have also spoken to the Great and Wonderful Rarywey, who says that she, in
fact, is willing to take on a lizard as a follower. Her ideals about Cycles,
Death and Rebirth seem to fit with what I have experienced in the world.
She's also the goddess of Poetry, and my only hobby is writing haikus. She
has nice ears too, much better than my ear-holes.

Chapter 1

Fair warning, this story isn't worth reading. Because it's my story. And I am
a lizard.

I think that's what all my problems go back to: my being a lizard. It was
certainly the source of my first problem, which was being the victim of an
eggnapping. Yeah, some cloud giant kid from Galadon thought my egg would
hatch into some kind of pet bird he could fly around with, I guess. When I
hatched into a lizard instead of his bird, he crammed me down the sewer
grates in Galadon.

I was just a baby lizard in the sewers, and I probably would have died right
then, but some ettins found me and took me to their lair. They liked to pull
my tail off so they could watch it grow back. They didn't talk much, but they
were the only family I ever knew. That's why I was so heartbroken when they
threw me out for getting too big, and for my tail being too difficult to pull
off.

After that, I found my way up to Galadon. I tasted the air there, like
lizards do, and that was the first time I ever noticed that mana tastes
really gross. I didn't think much of it at the time.

I was hungry and cold. Well, I'm always cold, because I'm a lizard, but
anyway, I knew I needed to find a way to support myself. In those days street
kids like me would prostitute themselves. I figured I'd give that a go.
Unfortunately, it didn't work out well, because no one will pay to have sex
with a lizard. (Something that would plague me the rest of my days, little
did I know at the time.)

Unable to properly whore myself, I lived off bugs. I don't like bugs. They
don't taste good and they remind me that I am, in fact, a lizard. Normal
people don't eat bugs. But, at least I could eat something while I tried and
failed at every profession available in the city of Galadon.

And that was how I ended up at the warrior guild.

"You would make a terrible warrior," the guild guard said to me. "You have
skinny lizard arms, a tail in your way, minimal quickness, and you make up
for none of this with brainpower. Go away."

He was right, of course. I would make a terrible warrior. But the thing about
the warrior's guild is they have to take anyone. So I countered with the
following argument,

"Would I be *good* at something else?"
