Chapter 3

Having spent so much time in the Village since joining as a Scout, Kardebast
realized that even within the place there were many different views and
outlooks on behavior. It can be said that the berserkers are those who are
most direct and rowdy in their way of work, preferring to directly attack and
destroy with impunity. The defenders, on the other hand, seem to work well
from a support role, ready to help others while still being fierce fighters.
Lastly, the scouts seem to act as a combination of both, prepared to find and
identify their enemies but also use their specific abilities to eat through
the massive protections mages of this day and age seem to favor.

The way of the scout seems to have had an effect on Kardebast that has made
him not as boisterous as his normal dwarven kin. He has come to believe that
he needs to be more thoughtful and circumspect about his actions. This has
had another effect upon him in that he has begun feeling as if there needs to
be a longer term vision for the Village, one that is even more important at
this moment because there is no leadership left with the passing of Ravln.
Kardebast understands that this war is not slowing down, instead only
becoming stronger and more difficult and that those with this vision to lead
into the next battle with thoughtfulness will help win the day.

Chapter 2

He finally got some clarity, from a visiting Imperial merchant of all things.
He was off duty and sipping an ale in the Inn and bantering with the man when
a pair of shapeshifters came in, one sprouting horns and the other turning
into some sort of giant rat. Fortunately for the crowd, a third outsider, a
rogue of somesort, ambushed the pair and drove them away.

In the aftermath, Kardebast commented to the Imperial that it more often than
not was mages that came through Akan, but he could not figure out why. The
merchant, into his cups and feeling bold, laid it out for him: mages learned
in Akan because the dwarves were weak. Warriors, rangers, the like, hunted
other warriors, learned on beasts in the wild, foes that proved challenging.
The dwarves were simply not respected as dangerous, and thus wizards who were
not powerful themselves early in their careers came here, because they could.

Kardebast wanted to punch the man, but thinking of the news from the outside
world, most of the heroes, be they of the Fortress, the Village, or some
other faction, werent dwarves. Angry, he confronted one of the watch
lieutenant with his findings. Things got heated, and they came to blows.
While Kardebast did not face any major penalties, he knew he could not remain
idly by anymore. A cousin owned a trading company in Udgaard, so Kardebast
decided to move.

The journey was arduous and he did not have training to protect himself. By
the time he arrived, his mind was made up. He worked part time for his cousin
to fund his entrance to the warrior guild. The guildmaster, an old dwarf,
took interest in him and let him enroll for a lower price. He resolved there
to learn, find his war, and eventually make way to the Village.

Chapter 1

Kardebast grew from birth to adolescence in Akan, and was working as a
stablehand before he moved to Udgaard. His clan, the Windhammers, has been on
the less martial side of modern dwarven society. Life in Akan has stagnated
somewhat in that families who are fighters supply most of the city watch,
king's guard, and even exported troops to Mortorn. Families more involved in
commerce also have developed a hierarchy, with those producing weapons and
armor at the top, ale next, and then everything else as more of a working
class.

While the dwarven respect for their kin is alive and well, there is an
unspoken social norm where those that do not contribute to fighting have less
sway over matters of defense. So when Kardebast, whose uncles the Farhoaks
run the Whispering Wind inn, grew tired of seeing his kin slayed by outsiders
looking to hone their deadly arts, he had little agency to change anything.

At first, he thought of asking the watchmen to bar entry at the gates to any
armed foreigners. But being related to hospitality, he knew it wasn't
feasible. So he stewed from his vantage in the stables as parties of
adventurers would come in, sometimes almost monthly, and slay his kin for
sport. And he started to notice a pattern: many of those that reaved through
Akan were mages.

As each 'learning party' came through and the notoriously non-prolific
dwarves bore more and more losses, his anger grew. He asked his family why,
but no one had any real answers. So he continued to stew, pushing his rake,
biding his time, though for what, he did not know.

A year and change passed, with Kardebast alternately berating or beseeching
the watchmen to do something about the stream of marauding outsiders. At
least stop the wizards, make them be accompanied by a guard, he would say.
No, we can't treat anyone differently, sorry Kardebast it doesnt work
that way. All the while he looked for a solution or at least a direction for
himself.
