Chapter 3

Over the years Cizertikh watched the hag care for the animals of the
wild, take in the unwanted and the protect cripples. From the wood
they would spy upon Arkham, Brittleleaf, and Barovia. She spoke of
the Ancients and of the coming, and of the cycles of life. She taught
him of the diggers and the undead and all that was unnatural.

Chapter 2

Waking, eyes blurry, he finds an old crone poking at him with a
stick. She rolls him over in shallow water. His wounded face
presses into the silt and darkness overwhelms him.

She is a witch, a homeless hag, Magdra. She tends to his wounds.
Though she knows the spells of transmutation she does not remove
the scars from his face. She has a love for the outcasts, the cripples,
and the especially the disfigured. Once healed she paints a skull
over the scarring and names him Death. Death because he came to
her near it. As time passed the name remained. He would eat any
frog that crossed his path, and empathy was never in his eyes.

Chapter 1

Far below, beyond the eyes of men, there are are no second
chances. The Underdark is cold and cruel.
Cizertikh was very young. While with his father in the streets of
Teth Azeleth, for a bit of fun, he darted around a bend. Knowing
his father would be quick to pursue he slipped through bars and
into a cavern. This was a mistake. Three shapes rose before
him, goblin slaves. At his age each he was outmatched.
Tackled, he felt its hot breath before it bit into his face. Cizertikh
tore away but his cheek was gone and blood burst from the wound.
A hand was on his shoulder and he looked up to see his father. In a
flash he was thrown back into the goblins. Fists came crashing down.
He felt his shoulder pop. Small and wet with his own blood he was
not easily held down. He slipped away and found himself upon a
sewage drain. He squeezed through.
