Chapter 5

**** An Excerpt from the Journal of Rynellan ****
It's been almost two decades since she left this world. I
never thought I'd know purpose again. I knew only my books,
and my little cave. But now, I wear the Squires Mantle, and
I know where my life needs to go. I know that my home is here
now.

I've started learning to control myself better, and in doing
that I can help those I bring to this plane of existence do
what they were made to do. We continue, together to push back
the darkness. It is no easy task, not for my body or my soul.

The blood washes off my hands, of that I'm sure. But will it
ever wash off my soul? I know it needs doing, and it is hard,
but we can do hard things. I know that my brothers and sisters
can be pillars of aid that I can rest myself on, but do I dare
open myself to them? What will happen if I start losing them
like I lost Her?

Chapter 4

Reynellen and his new friend, Frederick by name, had walked down off the
mountain into the great shining city of Voralia. The small coyote leading him
to the front of the guild of conjurers. Nuzzling his hand it pushed gently
with its shoulder on his thigh towards the door.

Reynellen spent the better part of a year learning what he could in the guild,
finding his affinity with the Elemental Plains and the Azure Fields. As he
progressed Luandra taught him more. He would catch glimpses of men and women
walking the streets of Voralia, clothed in the same tabbard she'd worn.

As time passed he headed back up into the mountains and found the path to her
old home. Standing before the great building, Reynellen saw the guardain
there, dressed in find armors. He knew what she ment, they needed him. But
just as much. He needed them.

Chapter 3

Reynellen looked out of the mouth of his cave, high up in the mountains. He'd
been there for a long time he thought. Unsure how many days, he stopped
marking the wall after the fourth month.

Books lay strewn about the cave. Those, and provisions were about the only
reason he left the caves any more. After several month, he'd had his first
visitor. A man seeking arcane knowledge. They sat for some time, Reynellen
unsued to speaking, found his voice, and they discussed a great many things.
The man left a few tomes as payment and walked back down the mountain. A few
weeks later, another came.

And so it was. Reynellen sat in his lonely cave, studying and sharing what
knowledge he could glean. He would speak to most of those who came with good
intent. Those who's intent was less than pure found themselves ushered away
briskly by unseen forces.

A warm, stary night, Reynellen had decided to start a fire out on the plateau
in front of his cave. He'd come to call it his porch. He sat on the ground,
twidding a stick in the flames. Then came a long, warm gust of wind, touching
his cheek like a caress.

A strange, yet oddly familiar voice came on that wind.

"You are needed my Love. The world needs you. You can't sit up here forever
Rey." came her voice, lot to him after so much time.

"I have brought a friend for you, he'll guide you down the mountain, to a
friend, where you can learn and start to train. Then, when you are ready, you
can join them. They need you Rey." came the whisper on the wind.

Out of the woods at the edge of his porch came a coyote loping across the
ground, it walked up to Reynellen and nuzzelde himself under his arm, looking
up, it winked.

Chapter 2

Reynellen sat by her bed, almost five years to the date, that they had met in
the Master's Library. She had given up her Mantle for him, for Love. The
sickness came not long after. It started slowly at first, but as the months
came and went, as the healers came and went, it progressed like a glacier
moving across the land.

But her time was short now, she knew it. She also knew what it would do to
him. He could barely pull himself from his books now. Focued on finding some
answer. He had beseeched the priests, and priesteses of the land. They tried,
all that they could. He was convinced the answer lay somewhere in the Azure
Fields. As he looked through the tomes he had accumulated, and the scripts
he'd written from the works he'd memorized in his Master's library, he was
pulled deeper into the thought that the answer was there.

Grace looked up as he sat there, a tome in his lap, her frail hand in his.

"You have to...." she whispered.

"I'll find it, I know its here." he said adamantly.

"Dearest, my time is here. You must let me go. You must move on. The war I
left sill wages. I know you think you are no warrior, but you have the heart
of one. Your knowledge will being more to them than your arm. They need you."
she whispered.

"I.... I can't... There's too much to find, I can't let you g...." he said,
interrupted as her hand slipped from his.

"Oh dear heart no, I am almost there, I almost have it... NO!!!!!!!!!!"

Chapter 1

The sounds of battle outside were waning. Reynellen sat behind a large table
in the Masters library. Few were allowed to study here. The secrets
contained in the texts were considered too dangerous for the uninitiated.
He'd been here since his second year. The Master had seen something in him
he supposed.

Not long after the last shouts of battle faded the door creaked open, and She
walked through. Blond hair falling past her shoulders in a tight braid, the
mix of mud and blood on her blue tabbard almost seemed out of place with the
perfection of her features. The phoenix on the tabbard shown with an almost
otherworldy glow. In her right hand, a long silver broadsword, in her other
a sturdy shield, almost marked with a Phoenix.

"Calm for one sitting in the middle of such a ruckus" she said with a melodic
voice.

"My time will come, the Master has forseen it, but that time is... not now."
said Reynellen.

"Ahh your Master, I'm sorry that we were not here sooner, they breached the
gates he's..."

"Dead, yes, I know, he told me it was coming. I have been studying all that
he had. I have what I need I think, so best to do what he asked." Reynellen
stood then and moved several of the books to the middle of the room, taking up
a candle he dropped it in the middle of the books. The flame started small,
but burst wildly not long after.

Reynellen continued to feed books, some making the flames change colors, some
making them jump higher, and even others making them suck down to almost
nothingness.

"We'd best be on our way, you will want to warn your friends. some of the
books on the shelves are protected, and the reaction to the flames when they
reach them will be.... well lets just say we don't want to be here." he said
as he strode to the open door.

Holding it as a gentlement would, he said "My Lady. Please after you."

The woman walked out the door as Reynellen shut it behind him.

"Now, what did you say your name was?" he asked

"I am called Grace." she said.

"Grace.... Shall we gather your men then and head to the inn down the hill?"
he asked.

"Yes, I think that prudent" she said.
