|
Ululrek Ar'kuni the Holy of Faith, Chancellor of Eternal Night
DescriptionUlulrek cuts the imposing physical presence of a mature duergar with broad shoulders, thick arms, and a barrel of a torso. He has, perhaps, a little extra height for his kind - making him the height of either tall duergar or short human. You notice immediately that his grooming is better than most of his kind as well. His armor, clothing, and possessions are well-maintained, clean and organized. He is clean, manicured, and thoughtfully presented.
The most eye-catching thing about Ululrek is surely his countenance. He appears stern and focused, yet his eyes possess a mischievous gleam that belies a dark wit. He has pale, gray skin that creates dramatic contrasts where his brow and jaw make shadows. His eyes are golden in color, and fade to a creamy white at his pupils. All hair on him is a stunning, bright white as vivid as freshly fallen snow. The hair on his head is shaved off the sides and back of his scalp, then pulled back into a neat pony tail. Finally, you notice a carefully trimmed white beard framing his angular face. It is clearly a source of pride.

RoleChapter 5 A Fookin' Primer I Added Sun Feb 19 11:17:59 2023 at level 51:Originally written for Ishuli's library, I thought this Primer might provide a fun insight to Ululrek's speech.
"A Fookin Primer" - by Ululrek Ar'kuni, Duergar in Residence at the Eternal Library
The word "fook" is an important part of classical Theran vernacular, and should be well understood by any scholar. The word "fook" is the spice of language, and is perhaps the most versatile of words in the Common tongue. It can be used as a noun, adverb, an adjective, an interjection, or a modifier to language of all kinds.
In this Primer we will discuss the use of the word "fook." Having studied this document, you will be prepared to speak with eloquence and sophistication. At this point, sensitive sorts can fook right off.
1. Fooking Synonyms
There are a multitude of variations to the word "fook." These include, but are not limited to:
Fek Farg Fik Fuq Frig/Frigg Fug/Fugg Flip Fak/Fakk Fikfak
2. Fooking Races.
Each of Thera's Races can be described using "fook" in the following manner:
Feathered Fook: Arial Floating Fook: Cloud Giant Fishy Fook: Storm Giant (Also, "Fooking Trout.") RoleChapter 4 Chancellor of the Night (continued) Added Sun Jan 29 21:42:03 2023 at level 51:might take me life if I offend him, what the Witch would take away matters more - me scholarship and studies.
The talk goes well. Jhalei ain't a fookin dummy, whether or not she's worthy of the Chasm. In the Night, there be many secrets and I am careful to test her worth without revealing too much. I think I strike the balance well, and agree to set her to some tasks and recommend her to Lord Morius if she succeeds at them. Plus, I gave myself a couple laughs at her expense. Job done.
As I enter me guildhall my shadow smiles right at me. Odd. I don't recall my shadow ever doing that before. "Oi, yer a handsome fook!" I say to it. With that it rises out of the ground and materializes into Lord fookin Morius.
"I suppose we are, the benefits of our positions, no doubt," he says.
He goes on to say some real nice fookin crap about me. He says I am charming and commanding, the prime example of a Scion who will succeed. He says I will change the world. He says I will be Chancellor, and the speaker of the Prophecy. I will determine what the Prophecy needs to know its fruition.
Which, more or less, is how I end up sharing breathing space with Lord Morius.
As he departs me, I stand for the first time as Chancellor of the Night. There is now so much to think about. The possibilities this gives for my research are almost unfathomable. There are so many dimensions of suffering I can work within now. I will continue to make others suffer with my supplications and nut-kicker, of course. But now I can make pledges and Scions suffer. And, perhaps most exciting of all, I can make the world suffer through the Prophecy. Ideas already explode like fireworks in my mind. Now to choose one...
Oh, and Jhalei? The tasks and the world broke him. The Night will never speak his name. At best, he is a footnote in my research. The fook.

RoleChapter 3 Chancellor of the Night Added Sun Jan 29 21:30:37 2023 at level 51:Well fook me! Sometimes you end up in spot, and you just don't know how you got there. That's how I felt with big 'ol Lord Morius leaning down, his milky-white eyes right in front of mine. There's a smile on his face, and if I look only with my eyes I might think it kind. My soul knows better. I try to look brave. Sure of myself. I try not to pee.
Where did this all start?
It had been a day, that I can tell you. I awoke, as I often do, in the Shroud of the Unspoken. It's a good place to rest so when you get up you can figure where the Scepter is and maybe get the drop on your enemy in a retrieval. Sure enough, on this day the Battleragers are keeping it in their Bone Throne. The ranger Arrukal stands guard over the Village, and I know he's likely to call in that big, stinking, fish-gut-smelling bastard Kardir the paladin. Lord Morius might put a little fear in this duergar, but those two fooks can't.
Before I start in on the fooks and the Village's giant guardian I hear from a young conjurer called Jhalei. He wants a place with those in the Night. I remember getting a scroll from. It was nothing special, but he's been a pledge for a good bit of time as far as I can tell. I tell him to shut his yapper and wait his turn. Blood first.
I welcome the simplicity of battle to consider this Jhalei. There's nothing special in the battles, no one dies, everyone gets kicked in the nuts, and I reclaim the Scepter for the Chasm. I note whether the young conjurer has any patience, and I take my time restocking my potions.
A good Scion always has at least two good reasons to do something. Lord Morius has asked me, like all Scions, to speak to pledges. The "request" of Lord Morius be one sufficient reason to speak to pledges. Giving them tasks to prove themselves is a way to cause a different kind of suffering and bolsters my research.
I summon Jhalei to the path before Lord Morius' church. I don't tread within out of respect for me Lady Witch, the sponsor of me research. Morius

RoleChapter 2 Fookin' Tools Added Thu Jan 5 13:25:33 2023 at level 30:Ah memories....
"Like dis, ye fook." I watch as Torturemaster Grimwal slides his knife just under the surface of the man's skin, methodically flaying it free of his right arm. The man screams and tears fall from his clenched eyes.
Concentrating, I apply my knife to the man's left arm. I find his flesh resists, and I press harder with my blade. At last the edge chunks into his flesh, but too deep. The man gives a grunt of pain. I try to plow the knife through his flesh, but it's too far below the surface. Instead of the long, thin slice of skin the torturemaster got, I only manage a bloody chunk of man-arm. Fook.
"Nah, ye fook!" Grimwal says, shaking his head. He smacks the back of my head damn hard. "Watch 'gain!" The man trembles as Grimwal's knife moves skillfully toward his right arm. The blade skims the surface and pulls free another long, pink ribbon. The man writhes against his restraints, screaming in blessed agony.
I screw up my brow thoughtfully. I reach my knife toward the left arm of the trembling man. I scrape its dull edge across the surface of his skin, but get no reward. I try sawing. The man contorts in agony, but I can tell it pales in comparison to the torturemaster's work. I get another swat on the back of my neck. Fook!
"Go sharpen tha damn thing!" Grimwal sneers. "Yer done fer tha day!"
And just like that, I have to wait to learn more about flaying. Fook!. Even though I don't get that lesson, I get another one: tools matter.
That's why, many years later, I was so grateful to receive the path of Venoms from the Witch Ishuli. The insidious poisons are perfect for conducting my research. Her blessings on my research project are most welcome, and I have begun. I've written a synopsis of the book I'll write, and will seek her out to discuss it soon.
I also work hard for another tool: the powers of the Eternal Night. I have been given a task by Lord Morius, and work to complete it in a satisfactory manner.
Each day my power grows, and I learn a little more. Soon I will bring suffering upon all of Thera. I will know what it takes to make men break in a way that Torturemaster Grimwal and his head-smacks could never fathom.

|
RoleChapter 1 Suffering's Scholar Added Tue Dec 27 16:48:25 2022 at level 11:How much suffering can a man bear before he breaks? Truly, the answer must depend upon the man. Or does it depend upon who or what is doing the breaking? It is to these questions I, Ululrek Ar'kuni, Dedicate myself to answering. I will know how to break a man, and by proxy I will know how to be unbreakable.
Now, I realize this may sound like a plea to learn the powers of the shaman's breaker path and so I wish to address this notion right off. While any boon from the Lady Ishuli is welcome, the Breaker path may not be the best option for my studies. Simply using the power of your god to tell a man to break doesn't yield data on how much he could endure before breaking. In this regard, any other shaman's path would be better for the research.
I first became interested in the topic working as a torturer. It's a good job for a duergar, if somewhat cliche. My people were made for dungeons. But as a professional torturer, one does not actually want to completely break one's subject. There is typically a particular objective one is after - a bit of information. If you completely break your mark they cannot provide reliable information.
And no one tortures just for torture's sake. Usually.
But there I was, wanting to continue the pain of my victims long after they gave up what I was paid to get. I could not sate my curiosity. I always wondered, how much more can this one take? And, when I found out, I found I could not wait for the next victim so that I might see what it took to break them.
Eventually, my curiosity got me fired. No one wants a torturer who ends up killing all the prisoners. Alas. At first I was upset, but I came to realize I was free to pursue my studies on a grander scale. When I learned of the Eternal Library, I found my true calling: to write the definitive work on suffering.
Apart from this calling, I feel so little else is important. I was born in Arkham to no-account parents who did little more than keep me alive. I have no idea what they do now, and no desire to know. Though I consider myself a scholar now, that trait did not appear until I found a topic worth studying. I showed no particular gifts growing up.
I will seek out the Lady Ishuli to discuss my work, and its worthiness for her Library. With her blessing I will go forth and unleash suffering on the world and carefully measure the results. I intend to join the Scions of the Eternal Night, for their aims would create a perfect environment for my research.
