#75263, "[FORTRESS] Olelladaria the Champion of the Virtues, Acolyte of the Golden Sun"
|
Olelladaria the Champion of the Virtues, Acolyte of the Golden Sun
DescriptionTwo braids act as a circlet, holding back flaxen hair from her face, crossing high on her forehead before being joining the wavy tresses in back. Her skin is slightly bronzed, a less common feature for her kind than the violet eyes blazing like summer lightning or her fine nose and delicate mouth.
A plaid handkerchief is tied incongruously around her neck, and beneath her armors you see the collar of a coarse linen shirt embroidered with a flowering thistle. Her armor is well-maintained, and even in this moment of inaction there is a sense of restlessness about her.

RoleChapter 10 Penance, Conflict, and Faith Added Sat Aug 27 14:37:07 2022 at level 51:I am now in a position where I serve a self-imposed penance, as I have in some way offended the Light, and those powerful figures in the Light no longer entrust to me their most powerful possessions. I have offended some in the Fortress, for as an outsider I have questioned the bloodthirstiness of their methods, and for decades the Lords and Ladies of the Light have not revealed themselves to me.
I have my faith, though, and it remains unshaken. We must confront behavior which is wrong, even if it is done with good intentions.
The Light guide always my heart and hand.

RoleChapter 6 Matters for Faith, II Added Sat Aug 20 13:48:44 2022 at level 51:I met recently with the Elder Prophet, Telian Silverfoot, at the behest of Squire Kormanagon, and together we three talked about our observations of those in the Fortress. I have reservations in regard to joining an institution who seems to view the goal of eradicating evil as a series of bloodbaths, and I likened it to "punching the rivers of of darkness but failing to rescue the silvery fish trying to swim through the stream."
I wish to maximize my positive impact on Thera, and I though I feel I might have better access to the "fish" of the Fortress if I swim in their waters, I am concerned that the way of Maran, though well-intentioned, is deeply flawed.

RoleChapter 5 Matters of Faith Added Sat Aug 20 10:29:05 2022 at level 51:Exlajin, two days before he died, spoke with me about his charity, his good works. He was understandably proud for giving things to others, but he did not see that giving tainted items about was not about balance, but was promoting evil. This lead to a discussion about what it means to be balanced in regard to morality, and when confronted on this issue, he stated that morality was not a priority. In truth, his "amoral" stance was a matter of convenience, not of one o priority, for it would have interefered in his exploration, adventures, and acquisitions. It saddens me we could not follow this conversation with another, but I hope he. is now in a better place.
Orenby has been a good friend and companion, but I am afraid even after our talk, his bank account is still excessively large with gold that might rival an imperial. Obviously the future may hold a need for finance his war against the darkness, but that becomes too easily a justification for avaricious behavior. He did not argue, but I have no idea if he is still slaying dragons repeatedly for their hoards.
Luthias, a young paladin, showed interest as I departed with a group to Trothon. "Exploration can strengthen the light," I told him, "but we should never let our desires for adventure or artifacts jeopardize the lives of those in our care." This came about in response to the covetousness of a squire bard aspiring to Maran.

RoleChapter 4 A reflection on virtue and vice, continued Added Sat Jul 30 06:52:22 2022 at level 32:Those of this author's guild have codified a set of actions that define a belief of what makes someone good. There is a recurring theme that underlies each tenet, and that is the paladin's behavior in the larger society. A true paladin is not strictly martial in the mundane sense of the word, but a crusader for a cause. Courage, generosity, steadfastness, honesty, and moderation are all character traits that serve the purposes of others more than they serve the individual. Vice, it follows, serves the individual over the group.
None of this is revelatory, but what if motivations are in conflict? At the time of this writing, the bruises of a brutal attack upon the author by an outlander ranger Bartok are still fresh. He struck at a svirfneblin and the paladin as they fought abominations in the mausoleum. Outlanders understandably despise undead, yet he struck the Battlerager first, then the paladin, and ignored all the undead. Even a snare was placed at the svirfneblin's home. His actions suggest that his personal motivations superseded the goals of his community. This is a solid example of evil.
On the other side, the author sat and spoke with a bard who dreams of not only making a place for herself as a Maran, but to lead the Fortress. If squires and maran are tasked with destroying evil, then how do they choose whom to fight? One cannot take five steps in Thera without passing a foul vagrant, a reeking duergar, or a pestilent undead. Some might say if their strength is sufficient, taking on the stronger enemy serves the greater good. It is impractical to attempt to do more than what one can accomplish, and wasteful to expend our energies on more mundane foes. Is it impractical then to become a Maran in claiming to attempt to destroy all evil, when the enemy is innumerable and is potentially overwhelming? Is it vanity to even attempt it? And if, in seeking to do 'the greater good', can we make the indefensible claim that one good is greater than another?
This line of thinking becomes dangerous if we see it as futile, but that is an improper conclusion. Virtue is outwardly focused, and so it is not about what we as individuals can achieve, but we as individuals can achieve to benefit others.

RoleChapter 3 A reflection on virtue and vice Added Sat Jul 30 06:04:25 2022 at level 32:It is incontrovertible fact that we can determine character through divination, so with the existence of vice and virtue firmly established, we must consider what it is that causes one's spirit to shine or to menace.
As she scratches out her thoughts on this vellum, the author cannot help to wonder what defines a person's character? Recently she encountered an oddity, a dark-elf who had successfully earned a place among the Fortress of the Light. In his early days, divination revealed that his life was defined by vice, yet his intent and early actions were consistent with one holding good in his heart. From this and the perusal of those spirits of 'neutral' character we can see that our character is not reflected in the actions of the moment, but a marriage of habitual action and other factors that shape the essence of who we are. The dark-elf who became a squire serves as an excellent case to ponder.
Like all of his race, Quivdevereah was born with a red aura indicating a baser nature. Even in the early years, this base nature did not immediately shift to match his actions and aspirations to be a goodly soul worthy to be a squire. Is our nature then defined not by our actions but our habits of action? This must be so, and if we look at the newborns of each race, it is apparent that our character has an inherent quality that is passed onto the next generation: the sins of the fathers are passed to the sons.
What then of these habits distinguishes virtue from vice?

RoleChapter 2 Vision Added Thu Jul 28 16:19:26 2022 at level 16:The journey to the more civilized world was more or less uneventful, and she saw potpourri of races in Galadon, smelled the salt and sewage of Hamsah Mu'tazz, and eventually settled into the merchant bustle of Voralian City. It was such an interesting town to the eyes of this elven girl, with its brisk-walking patrolmen and the diffident shopkeepers, the impoverished and the wealthy, and the flotsam of adventurers who came and went their way through the island. She found a statue of the namesake for the city, and in seeing what good can be done through effort, will, and vision, Olelladaria vowed to become a paladin, a champion of the Light. Because she came to the city as a beggarly traveler, she chose the path of a monk. She had no desire to live the life of an ascetic, but she swore to not be seduced by a lavish lifestyle and to help those deserving and in need.
She seeks to explore the values and assumptions that underpin the motivations and actions of herself and others, and this interest drew her to approach Lord Einoh as her inspiration. Presently, she sees entering into local politics as a distraction from her life's purpose and therefore has no immediate interest in joining one of the dominant cabals.

#75280, "Olelladaria's Role Chapter 1"
|
RoleChapter 1 Prelude Added Thu Jul 28 15:51:34 2022 at level 16:Olelladaria lived much of her youth in Evermoon Glen, a child of two high elves, her father being something between an ambassador and a business envoy from Darsylon. She grew to enjoy the company of one of the local boys, a tall free-spirited boy with ears too long for his short-cropped white hair and tiny little nose, but over the decades of youth she found she admired the young man who had grown into his ears. Olelladaria's mother, always the more observant of her parents, noticed this and suggested to her husband that the two be allowed to enter the courtship process.
The young couple put behind them the free unsupervised play of children to embark on one that might ferry them into adulthood. Olelladaria's parents wished to hire a traditional matchmaker, but their counterparts would hear nothing of such a thing, and so both parents agreed to compromise on a chaperon, and the courtship began.
One fine summer day with wind causing the tree leaves to dance like silver-winged fairies, their governess (as Rathatalus called the couple's chaperon) had led their horses up to the ridge where a clan of dwarves had created a settlement. The chaperon snarled at their presence, thinking they should be pushed out or exterminated. Olelladaria disagreed, for their intentions struck her as pure. Her beau would not take a stance, stating he was neutral on the matter.
The rest of the day she grew taciturn as she wrestled with the notion of good and evil. Rathatalus tried to draw her out, but Olelladaria became increasingly dismayed with the thought that her intended could be ambivalent to a discussion of killing off a people who at heart were good. His principles, his values, his priorities were at question.
Her mother noticed the turn in Olelladaria's mood, and plumbed the depths of her dilemma a week after the trip to the settlement. Later, both her parents insisted that their daughter should continue with the marriage, as to do so would jeopardize the relationship her father had been trying to build over the last century.
That night, Olelladaria wrote a note explaining her intentions to study the nature of the Light. She packed up her belongings, a memento from Rathantalus, and left the letter on her pillow.
