Chapter 5

It took some time before she grew accustomed enough with her thoughts to
stand, but no sooner had she done so she encountered another seemingly
insurmountable problem. The knowledge and experiences that had kept her alive
within the perils of the Underdark were gone, replaced by memories of study
and service in the court of noble Drow. She could still see that person, knew
intimately who she had been, but the vision and. memories of that life swam
cloudy through the waters of her mind.

Still, through the muddle of her new self she saw clearly her blood oath, that
pledge to survive at all costs. Eria had found her power, and with time she
knew she would master it. She only needed to survive, only needed to grow.
Silently then she wondered again at the wisp that had responded to her need:
was it a manifestation of her own or a response from the Divine? Perhaps she
would encounter the answer to that question as well in time, and that thought
gave her comfort.

With the Underdark inaccessible and dangerous, she knew that her only
opportunity for life would be to ascend toward the surface. The surface would
have its own perils, not least of which included the slavers that destroyed
her home, but staying here meant a sure death by starvation. With a turn of
her hand and a spoken word, she made herself invisible. The sense of doing
magic was not the shocking experience she expected, and soon she was moving.

The golem outside her cave gave a passing motion toward her, but did not
otherwise react. At the far end of the chamber past the crystalline pillars,
she found a stairwell, and through that a portal. The master inside of her
mind knew the words, and the portal opened for her to reveal a harsh tunnel of
cut stone and water. She imagined that once entering, she would be unable to
return. This life, this surface existence, would be her only way forward. Eria
paused only a moment to reflect on that, and judged that her life here had
truly ended the day she left. She stepped forward into the portal, and when
her vision cleared she found herself standing within the Galadon sewers.

Chapter 4

She moved slowly through the room, and each crystal seemed to respond to her
presence as if the soul within longed to experience her life. However, each
crystal also seemed to respond to her experiences as if judging her. Memories
of her own frenzied flight washed across her as each crystal forced her to
relive the worst parts of her life. The essence of her being was distilled to
a mechanical core: her need to flee, her need to hide, her need to fight, and
her need to survive.

As she traveled the circle, each crystal dimmed after their appraisal of her
worth. The master of fire found her too cautious in her escape, the master of
ice too reckless in her battle with the golem. With each rejection, she
understood innately why she did not measure up. When she came across the
master of body, the reaction was different. The soul contained within the
crystal resonated with her need to hide, and offered her the ability to move
unseen. The spirit saw her need to flee, and brought forth magic of escape.
After seeing the battle in the cave, there was a resonating understanding of
battle and how she might forge herself into a weapon. This spirit delved into
her core, and accepted her as she was.

What happened after, Eria would never be able to truly describe. After
accepting her, the crystal bloomed with light that enveloped her completely.
The lattice structure of the stone merged with her, and she was rewritten. The
martial and survival knowledge she possessed diminished, replaced by insights
into the manipulation of the veil. She still felt like she was the same
person, but she was someone else as well. Within the span of ten heartbeats,
she had gained a lifetime of mastery in the arcane. After it was done, the
crystal dimmed to nothing, the magics within exhausted.

Chapter 3

In the traditional manner, as daughter of a high ranking Matriarch, Eria's
education had been thorough. But what was quite unique, she would find out
much later, was the amount of martial training she had been offered. The women
of her family, even the ones destined to be trained for Priestess, were
initially taught alongside the men. As a border town close to the surface, the
possibility of skirmishes was always on their mind and her kin were expected
to be prepared.

This truth became immediately relevant after she opened her eyes to a large
stone golem advancing rapidly toward her. Reflexes honed from combat took over
for a rational mind still recovering, and she rolled away from the first
attack before leaping to her feet. Armed still with only a broken rock, she
managed to evade another attack before taking stock of her surroundings. She
stood in a narrow cavern flanked by crystals that glowed with a soft inner
light. The wisp that had manifested this travel was nowhere to be seen, and
the golem was the only other moving object in view.

Evading further would be hard, as the tight quarters gave little room to
maneuver. However, as she backed away she noted that the construct did not
seem to give chase. It was clearly guarding something, and that something had
to be what the wisp had brought her to find. Fueled by adrenaline and a rare
bit of recklessness, she judged a path to evade it into the darkened passage
behind. She took off running toward the golem in a frenzied sprint, her
direction taking her toward the far corner. At the last minute, she used her
superior mobility and smaller size to slide under its attack, and then used
the cavern wall as leverage to throw herself to the side and through the
opening. She landed with a thud within the constructed passage beyond, and
around her the world descended immediately back to silence.

Lifting her head to examine her surroundings, she beheld a sight of immense
wonder. The passage she laid upon ended in a large circular chamber holding a
dozen ornate adamantite pedestals. Upon each pedestal sat a crystal that
swirled with light and magic. As she descended cautiously into the chamber and
inspected the crystals, visions of lives lived filled her head. She gazed with
wonder at the memories being played out across her vision, and knew with
certainty that this was the place she had sought. She stood within the cave
containing the captured souls of mages.

Chapter 2

A Darkened Seer, one of the chosen handmaidens blinded by the distant Drow
Queen to grant her the gift of sight, had traveled to Eria's city once during
her childhood. She spoke of many things, magical sights and histories beyond
the walls, but one in particular struck the young Drow given her current
situation. The Seer had told of a cave in which an ancient Drow Matron and her
Artificers had distilled the essence of the city's magical elite into
crystals. These crystals, it was said, were then imbued into golems such that
the powers once commanded would never be lost. To a child that had already
seen all manner of cruelty in her life, it had seemed an enviable story of
power outlasting even its creator, but to a refuge still likely hunted by
slavers it seemed an opportunity for survival and escape.

Of course, this opportunity also came with the near impossible challenge of
finding this storied cave in the endless Underdark with only minimal context.
She would likely need help, but the idea of attempting to find allies in her
hazardous world with only her wits and martial talent seemed as foolish as
attempting to return home to free her family. No, hiding was the only solution
available. Hiding and continuing to travel.

It was while contemplating her fate, death in the dark or by blood loss to
complete her oath to the gods, that she heard a faint stirring. Outside of
cities a light in the Underdark is a rare thing and usually part of a trap for
the unwary, so the appearance of what she would later come to know as a
will-o-wisp caught her entirely off guard. She did not know what to make of
the spirit and its dim moving light, but from it she sensed... familiarity?
The being had a malevolence to it, but in some capacity she felt kinship.

Seduced by a feeling of companionship that she had not felt since beginning
her journey, she extended a hand toward the apparition. A wave of
disorientation washed over her as the being touched her, followed by a loss of
consciousness. She had no memory of what happened after or how much time had
passed, but when she awoke again she was not where she had been before.

Chapter 1

"RUN!"

The last thing Eria's mother said to her as the slavers descended upon their
city was a command uttered in blind panic that she flee. She thought of this
moment often as she wandered the endless caverns of the Underdark, lost and
alone. Her mother, the matriarchal leader of their family, being reduced to
animal instincts and frenzied fear bothered the dark-elf far more than the
knowledge that the woman would likely spend the remainder of her days as a
slave.

Knowing the landscape outside what had been her subterranean city had been one
thing, but traversing it turned out to be quite another. There was no shortage
of food and water for those with the skill to find them, and for Eria those
classes had been her favorite, but the wild caves are cruel and uninviting
things full of terrors. It is hard to understand the depths and breadth of
that cruelty until you are amongst them. Still though, Eria knew how to
survive amongst these lands in which she had been raised.

Being alone in the caves, moving as much out of habit as caution, gave a great
deal of time for contemplation. When at last she emerged from the twisting
passages and found herself along the shores of the great underground sea,
young Eria had made a decision. With a broken rock in her hand, standing tall
against the endless waters of that massive ocean, she made a blood pact
between herself and any Divine that would listen. Spilling her dark blood into
the water, she vowed that she would never find herself in the position of her
mother. If she could not find power within these caves, the rest of her blood
could join her sacrifice. Alone amongst the broken rocks of this forgotten
shore, she vowed that death would find her before weakness.
