|
Izqi Zin'Giber the Major Chord, Divine Drummer
DescriptionFiery red hair is pinned up in a bun on the back of this human female's head. It has quite the curl to it, and despite her attempts to groom it, a natural frizzy looking halo of hair still pokes out. Her skin, where visible, is pale, making her freckles all the more obvious. The flecked freckles coat most of her face, looking similar to a canvas that got splattered with paint. Her eyes are green, but marked with various flakes of light brown, giving them a distinct hazel look when seen from afar. A thin nose sits between her eyes, as freckled as the rest of her face, leading down to equally thin lips. Her outfit seems customized, with many pieces of common equipment being dyed, alternatively sewed, or covered with small accessories. While she is clearly no tailor, her decorations and attempts at altering her clothing give her a very distinct look of someone who tries to find aesthetics in whatever she wears.

RoleChapter 8 Journal #5: Unity in the Village Added Thu May 19 18:34:37 2016 at level 51:Some of the other Villagers and I decided wed go slay a dragon. While that might be an exciting tale, Im more interested in something that happened as we planned to go. One of the members in the group was Dol, an Azure of the Azure Fields, an otherworldly being. The other was Thelathelao, a duergar. Both are berserkers of the Village, both hate magic.
But as we prepared to go, Dol refused to allow Thelathelao to come. Said it was either him or the Duergar, and not both. I objected to this line of thought, since I think that goes against the spirit of the village. Dol proceeded to, predictably, get offended. He told me about how hell never work alongside dark souls.
That brings me to this journal. I want to write about unity. I want to write about what I think is part of the spirit and history of the village, something that we all have to deal with when we join.
In the histories, there is a description of the village at its prime, stated as: Every race could be seen among the village huts. Angelic beings took flight <...> tending to the village arms. Gray-skinned duergars grumbled, hammering alongside the dwarven blacksmith while aiding Grime with his wares. An ivory colored felar danced through a number of battle stances with dark-elves and young high elves alike."
What a portrait that paints! It should be obvious though. We call our home a Village. We dont call it Duergar Station or Azure Field #2, and a village is made from all different kinds. When joining the Village, you surrender your previous identity, and eliminate all those standard vices that we might hold within us to unify under a singular purpose: the war. The everlasting war against magic.
So I have a problem with the way Dol thinks. Part of the village is its familial nature. Thror worked alongside Duergar, high elves and dark elves fought the same enemy, and all of these people were villagers. These, I think, are the ideal relationships for the Village, and the histories show us that. We are not interested in squabbles between dwarves and duergar, between the light and dark, or between order and chaos we have our one concern, the Magi.
My father once told me that when you admire someone, you should try to find those traits that make them admirable and attempt to replicate them. Thror is idyllic for many of us villagers, we were raised on tales of his exploits, and on his words of our history. To emulate him, to emulate BoltThrower, to emulate the grand Battleragers of old, we have to eliminate that loathing between us and unify, as a village, against our foe. It is not truly a Village if we refuse to associate with each other, and I do sincerely think that those like Dol who refuse their brothers hand are missing the true spirit of the village.
But what do I know, Im just a minstrel.

RoleChapter 7 Journal #4: Respecting Mages. Our foe is strong and we have to recognize that to defeat them. Added Sat Apr 23 19:31:12 2016 at level 51:Journal Entry Respect Recently I was talking with a Wight. I know, that sounds sort of blasphemous, being a Villager and all, but I dont think conversing with your enemy is in any way condoning them. An interesting topic came up.
Can a Battlerager respect a mage? Before I jot down my thoughts, its best I first write down what the Village writings and history say, or imply, about it.
The Tablet 1)From #2: pervert and subvert the power of the gods. They are therefore our enemies and shall be destroyed. 2)From #5: Avoid all that have succumbed to the charms of magic. It is your duty to put any such a charm out of their misery.
The Plaque 1)From #2: The true mages of Thera <...> have the taint so deep within them, that only death will cleanse them of it. 2)From #7: Remember always the betrayal of your ancient brethren <...> to forget the past is to forgive out betrayers.
No respect towards our foes, the Magi, is mentioned. The only direct mentions of respect come up about the Immortals and the Commander. Given our hatred of the Magi, and given how they are so impure that only death will cleanse them, can we actually respect them?
I, personally, think so. Respect is not the same as admiration, and one can respect something that one loathes. A guard might respect the criminal he has hunted all his life. A warrior may respect his rival. While the mages are to be treated as the lowest, utter betrayers, I still think respect not only can exist but DOES exist.
As an example, historically Commanders have put aside the sixth command on the Tablet for specific foes. The command is about parity, and how outnumbering your foe outside of specific situations is frowned upon. Many Commanders have, throughout our history, disregarded this particular command in regards to Liches, Wights, and the like. Why? You might say fear, fear that one person cannot properly handle such an elite Mage. Instead of fear, maybe need - the need for this Mage to die outweighs the standard rules.
That is respect, whether the Villager wants to admit it or not. It is respect for their power, for their advancement beyond the danger of a standard basic Magi. It is the kind of respect that is paid in combat, by the recognition that we actually may need numbers to beat a certain foe.
I ponder this because, as I talked with my brothers, they held no respect for the Mages they killed. Only hatred, pity, disgust, or the sort of consideration one might give a mosquito when swatting it. I feel that they are misguided on this point, as to not respect your foe is to underestimate them. It is to mentally let down your guard, and as the tenth command of the Plaque says, Be armed and ready for battle at all times, as preparedness is essential for victory.
As the legendary skjald Kastellyn said in his poem 'Victory in War', "The fray is fierce, our foe is strong".

RoleChapter 6 Journal #3 - Conflict Added Thu Mar 10 13:45:59 2016 at level 23:Journal #3 Conflict How does one properly solve conflict when it occurs within the very bonds of the Battleragers?
Recently I witnessed a disagreement between two Villagers which devolved into an insult match and a pending challenge in the Circle.
What is the source of using the Circle as a means to resolve arguments? The answer to this can be found in the details on The Rites of War. The Circle, it describes, was originally used for Villagers to relieve their frustration on each other. Violence for violences sake, to get the anger in you out on an ally. Afterwards it was used to test applicants, pitting them against veteran Battleragers to make them earn their scars. Lastly, it was used for when a Battlerager had left the Village, earning their hut back only by a victory in the Circle. Then comes the line that most rely on to justify the challenges in the circle: Any conflict that would arise between two barbarians was settled in blood, at the center of the circle. These disputes were decisive and could not be contested by the defeated man in the circle.
So, given this is how it was, is this how it should be? The answer to that question is a hard one. The authority to make such a decision resides in the wisdom of the Gods or the Commander. Still, since this is just a journal and Im not insulting anyones earned respect, I will share my thoughts here. Torzen, if youre reading this, I know youre the Commander! So dont go hitting me over this!
The Circle should be used to hammer a point home, not to make a point on its own, or to define rightness just by might. If the strongest warrior said Magic isnt so bad! and won in the Circle, it would not make the statement true. I can see the use in resolving a conflict quickly, and with violence, but I think there can be more to disagreement. Battleragers may be called Barbarians, but we are not orcs. Our minds should be honed as much as our bodies, our intellect as much as our brawn. Ill take you to the circle sounds more like I dont have an argument or reason for my behavior. The Commander and Drillmaster should reserve all rights to determine what issues are brought to the Circle and when.
In short: I think many folks have it wrong. Just because the Circle has been used like that doesnt mean it must, nor that it should be.

RoleChapter 5 Journal entry #2 Added Wed Mar 2 14:25:54 2016 at level 18:Congratulations to me! Ive done it. Arent I just the greatest? Not really, but feeding your ego can always be a bit nice. So I spoke to Torzen, the Commander of the Battleragers. We had a lengthy discussion that varied from tactics to the History of the Village. He seemed to appreciate my interest in the histories, as well as my focus as chronicling the living legends that walk the lands today. But there was one moment where he seemed to want more from me which is fine, since I am still just a fledgling and hope to improve and learn under his guidance. That was the knowledge, or maybe hatred, of the enemy: the Mages.
I made it clear to him that my interests were more, or different, than just I want to find all the Mages who have heads, then CLOBBER said aforementioned heads into a pulpy mess. I explained my interest came from reading, from study, which I guess is not the common way people are drawn to the Village since a few of them seem less than literate. What he seemed to imply wanting to cultivate in me was more than knowledge of the history of the Battleragers and Mages, but an understanding of it. Knowledge and understanding can be very different things, so Im going to detail a few of my thoughts here to sort it out for myself. The best method for learning can sometimes be introspection, right?
Knowledge occurs when you know something. It can be as simple as I know this is red. Thats a statement based on knowledge. Understanding, I think, goes beyond that. You may know that Gaspare, the lich, is evil but to understand he is evil you may need to experience it, or to see it firsthand. A comparison might be a book-bound librarian who read about Gaspare, and when asked, can recite that Boy he is sure evil, one of the evil-est!. Another party, a paladin who witnessed firsthand a mass slaughter of forces at the hand of the Lich may understand that evil far more than the librarian, though he never read a single word about him and doesnt know any of the theory.
I feel like thats where Torzen is coming from, and I look forward to being exposed to what he views as important in understanding the war. Im not averse to it, and as much as I like my books and my history, being chained or restricted to them is as much of a limit as someone who cant read at all.
In summary, I am now a Battlerager, taking the path of a defender. Torzen, the Commander, is as clever and tactically sound as I could have hoped, and he has implied that I have much to learn. I hope I do, and I hope to make him proud. I wont break their trust.
I'll get stronger.

RoleChapter 4 Journal entry #1 Added Wed Mar 2 14:25:17 2016 at level 18:An Entry from Izqis Journal #1:
Theres something about the way heroes are portrayed in art that doesnt sit well with me. Too often theyre static: sitting on a throne, pondering with a fist to their forehead, or standing proud and regal. This fails to celebrate one of the most defining feature of heroics: their body. Some might call me shallow, and I admit Ive got a wandering eye when it comes to a hunk strolling down the road, but that physical nature is exactly what helps in heroics.
How often do we hear tales of a heroic struggle involving a lanky skeletal man with glasses who has no hand eye coordination? How inspiring are tales devised from Hero X, the man who sat and didnt do anything all day? Bleh.
Maybe my problem isnt so much just with stories and art about heroics, but just how people look at heroes in general. What amazing equipment! they say, How excellent your bashes are they might comment, Pssht, your victory doesnt count, you had special swords they offer. Too often I find that people look at things separate from the hero for his heroics: his equipment, friends, guild, etc. Why not look at him? Appreciate the body he spent his life honing, the reflexes that are built into his physical form. Admire his broad shoulders that grew as he continued arduous daily labor, or her strong arms that she spent her entire childhood honing despite taunts about her ladyhood. I think that it is first and foremost excellence through form that defines a hero and creates a legend. A heros body is an extension of his will, his determination, and his goal.
You might have noticed theres not a lot of appreciation for heroic magey fellows in here. If so, you noticed right. While Im sure their studying was admirable, I think theres a certain something that physical labor has that magic will never achieve. I find myself looking more and more at these legends of the Battleragers, just for that reason. They achieve wonders with nothing more than their flesh and blood. It gives me shivers!

RoleChapter 3 Taletelling and Legends part 2 Added Fri Feb 26 19:12:28 2016 at level 12:A few of the children let out woeful "Oh no"s, while others still anxiously waited for the continuing story.
" 'I will not let you harm a single of these pigs!' Kyld said, 'Until they are cured of their curse, these men are under my protection'. Well the goblin was even angrier now, but he looked confused since his magic didn't do a thing to Kyld, do you know why that is?"
The kids shook their heads in unison.
"Because nothing can hurt a hero! And a hero Kyld was! He ran the goblin sorcerer off, cured the townsfolk from their piggy forms, and escorted me back to town. Do any of you know where Kyld is from, perhaps?"
"Where, where's 'e from?" shouted one boy in a strong accent.
"He told me that he was raised right here, in the Balator Orphanage. Who would have guessed that a little orphan one day would grow up to be such a hero"
Izqi finished her story to the crowd and smiled to herself as she heard them talking to each other: many of the kids stating how one day they would grow up to be a hero like Kyld, others looking around the orphanage to find out which bed he slept in, some arguing over whether he would ever come to visit the orphans himself. As Izqi left the orphanage she sighed to herself. There was no Kyld, no massive goblin battle, and she hadn't been on any amazing adventure. She had just been working at the bar in Galadon, as always. But if the story of Kyld stood to inspire, then it was still a worthwhile story. And even if there is no Kyld right now, maybe there will be. Now that the orphans are inspired, perhaps one of them will become a real Kyld.

RoleChapter 2 Taletelling and Legends part 1 Added Fri Feb 26 19:10:56 2016 at level 12:The children crowded around Izqi as she entered the orphanage. "Izqi!" a boy shouter as he hugged her leg. The whiny voice of a girl cut through the crowd, "You said you'd be back sooner, I thought you weren't ever going to come". Izqi slid through the small crowd, stepping in front of the complaining girl.
"I'm ever so sorry I was away for so long, but you see, I was caught up in.ADVENTURE!" The children's eyes all opened wide at the last word, the room becoming noisier as they chattered among themselves. Izqi continued in a teasing voice "But I'm sure you all wouldn't want to hear about that, you no doubt have more important things to do". The response was a deafening cacophony of "TELL US!".
Izqi smiled, getting comfortable on a chair, and began: "You see, I was traveling with someone I met right inside Galadon. His name was Kyld, he said, and he had been looking for someone to keep him entertained on a very dangerous quest. To the south, he told me, was a vicious and nasty goblin sorcerer who had turned many of the townsfolk into pigs!" Izqi placed a finger on her nose, pulling it up as she began to make snorting noises causing a shower of giggles across the room.
"I went with him, being an adventurer myself, and before I knew it we were knee-deep in goblins! How they hacked at us!" Izqi swung her hand around in the air, slicing blindly "I danced between the blades, dodging and trying to stay safe! But Kyld, oh you should have seen him, wielding a huuuuuge sword he took them all down, one swing at a time! I swear I even saw him cut three in half with one blow!" a few of the boys in the audience gasped, one's jaw dropped. "Piercing deep into their rank he didn't give up the charge! Hundreds of them stood in front of him, but he showed no sign of fear!".
A girl tugged at Izqi's leg and said "Kyld was okay, wasn't he? The goblins didn't get him?".
Izqi reassuringly ruffled the girl's hair, "Kyld is not so easy a prey! Soon the goblins were running after seeing his might. I kept up right behind him, watching his back, but he never needed me, not for a moment! Finally we saw the rank goblin sorcerer standing in a crowd of pigs! His face was slimy and warted, his hands glowing green with magic. The goblin snarled and in a fit of anger went to zap one of the pigs with his sorcery! But as the magic shot from his hands, Kyld jumped in the way, letting the magic strike him right in the chest"

RoleChapter 1 Izqi Zin'Giber Outline Added Fri Feb 26 19:01:27 2016 at level 12:Izqi Zin'Giber Outline She was raised around Tir Talath, at times living within the outpost and at others living in farmlands along the Northern Foothills. Her family was not wealthy, but was able to provide for her. In an attempt to make her better off, her parents made her study and read, diligently, starting at a young age. As she began to master the classics, history, and music, her parents thought her apt to join a bard's guild. Wanting to give her the best education possible they gathered up the money necessary to pay her way into Galadon's guild, where she spent her teenage years practicing with various instruments.
Her time off was spent on her hobbies: reading at the lyceum, working on various pieces of writing, and studying various cultures that she found interesting.
During those studies she came across legendary historical characters, which inspired her and caught her interest more than anything else. The ones that stood out most to her were the Battleragers, those who excelled without otherworldy means and pushed their bodies, and their skills, to the absolute physical limit. Because of this she has an aversion to magic, though it is a dislike and not a hatred. She hopes to join their ranks one day to chronicle the living legends who today walk the lands, but after death may walk in myths.
Her family, when she went to reunite with them after years of separation, were not to be found. She does not yet know their fate, but is confident that they know how to take care of themselves.
Her personality is slightly cheerful if not determined. The legends of old have instilled an attitude upon her that focuses on endurance, dedication, and knowledge. No matter how bad the odds, she remains confident that victory can be achieved so long as one acts intelligently.
A few quirks she has: She is infatuated with physical achievement, and thus finds herself attracted to what she calls "hunks", which end up being those who have physically trained their bodies to excel. Since she adores histories, legends and tales - she end up often referencing them or bringing them up in conversation, sometimes to the degree of annoying her companions.
