Chapter 7

The raucous laughter of a tavern fills the night air between flashes of
lightning and peels of thunder. All of the Imperial Lands are in celebration
at the coming of the New Year. Every citizen, from centurion to Emperor look
to the New Year as another to exert their dominance over the masses. The
light from the Owl and Thistle spills out onto Victory Lane and a slender
figure stumbles through it. A closer look reveals a beaten and haggard fela
carrying a basket under her arm. It seems the New Year wasnt good to all in
the Imperial Lands. The fela staggers down the Imperial Road and fumbles
some coin from her pocket to the centurions guarding the Lands. They stand
resolute, prepared to defend even in this time of celebration. She stumbles
her way past them, drops of blood falling from her cuts. Nobody pays
attention to her as most people are stumbling themselves from their
celebrations. The fela makes her way to the front doors of a large building.
She wipes the blood from her face with her wet sleeve and opens the baskets
lid. She bends down and kisses the forehead of a very small infant fela.
Tears stream down her face as she closes the lid. She sets the basket down
and uses the rope for the bell at the door. She whispers softly "Take care
of my Mryzzle." Having said her final words she quickly turns and stumbles
back into the rainy night. Her steps slow as she stumble past the main road
and into a small graveyard. Arriving at a stone marker she runs her hand
along the inscription of a name. Having accomplished her goal she lies down
at the marker and passes forever into the dream.

Chapter 6

The halls are always quiet at this time of night, a perfect time for reading
and reflection with the coming of a New Year. At least, that is what Jaragh
thought as he lit his reading lamp and sat down to his holy tome in the
orphanage. It has been a long time since the Knights roamed the lands, but
he still holds to their rituals, seeking to bring about goodness and light.
Just he bows his head to meditate upon his reading he hears something. He
shakes his head and tells himself that nobody would be crying on such a
festive night. He goes back to his meditation only to be startled by the
ringing of the entry bell. He obviously cant imagine why anyone would be
knocking, especially at one oclock in the morning, or so the clock on his
mantle tells him. He grabs his cloak and belts on his sword. He is always
cautious with the Imperial hordes so close at hand. He reaches the door and
removes the wooden beam used to lock the door at night. Jaragh opens the
door with the pull ring and peers out into the night. He sees nothing, and
scratches his head wondering where they could have gone. He grumbles about
teenagers and pranks, and begins to turn away. As he does he hears a muffled
sound coming from near the foot of the door. He notices the basket and
quickly picks it up, carefully opening the lid to see what is inside. To his
surprise it is a tiny fela infant, barely old enough to be away from his
mother. He notices a small note stuffed into the fur surrounding the infant
and pulls it from the basket. He notices bloodstain smears on the page and
what looks to be tearstains at the bottom.

Dear Jaragh,

Please look after my son, Mryzzle, as I fear my life is at an end.
He is a sweet boy, but his father is a devil, and I fear he would grow
up to be like him. If I survive bringing my son to you, I doubt I will
survive much after that. His father is an elite blade and will come
looking for him. Please protect him, as I cannot.

Please tell him his mother loved him very much.

Realizing what is now in his hands Jaragh quickly closes the door and puts
the locking beam back into place. He rousts the cook from her slumber and
asks her to prepare a warm bottle of milk, showing the boy to her. Her heart
melts upon seeing him and she quickly goes about her task. Jaragh explains
to her that they will have to hide the boy for a few years away from the
other children. He also explains what great care it will take to hide him
from the Imperial questioners. The cook reminds Jaragh that this boy might
be a chance for Jaragh to pass on his knowledge, and strike a blow at the
vile Imperials to the north. They both smile at the thought, and rejoice,
for a New Year has come!

Chapter 5

A few years have gone by since Mryzzle was dropped off that fateful New Years
Night. The time for progress reports from Ms. Gilfoyle have come. Jaragh
always looks forward to this time of the year when he can check on the
progress of all his young pupils. He of course pays special attention to his
little adopted son. From what he has seen Mryzzle has adapted well to
being in the orphanage, but he is concerned with his interactions and
outlook. As he arrives in his quarters he notices that Ms. Gilfoyle has
placed a basket with wine, cheese, and her reports on his desk. He smiles as
he thinks of her and her dedication to him and the students. He pours
himself a glass, and cuts a few slices of cheese and settles into his
comfortable chair near the fireplace.

My dearest Jaragh,

Mryzzle is growing at a good rate. His speech is underdeveloped, but Im not
sure that he will ever get around it with the way his fangs sit along his
jaw. He has trouble nearly all of the time with his Ss and often his Rs.
His stutter is nearly completely gone, but he has a tendency to revert if he
is excited. He is very affectionate with me, and hugs me often before
leaving class for the day. He is a sweet little boy, I see some of your
dearest qualities shining through in him. I think your private lessons with
him concerning combat, the light, and life in general has really helped him.
He does not necessarily pick up on his subjects quickly, but Ive found that
once he learns something he has uncanny recall.He is able to look at a
decision and make good conlusions, but at times struggles with the how.
Overall his studies are improving at a normal rate and I would consider him
on an even keel with the others.

His interactions with the other children however, has caused me a bit of
concern. Some of the problem may stem from their jealousy of your time, but
I believe Mryzzle tends to be shy. When he is outside at play with the other
children he tends to go off alone, and stick to the shaded areas. It is
almost as if he intends to hide or be unseen by them. I will often find him
working some of the martial art forms that you have been showing him. He has
taken a very keen interest in them. He will always respond to the children
when they speak to him, but he rarely seeks conversation with them. He is
also not very interested in some of the group sports, and would rather play
alone most often. Im not necessarily saying it is a problem, but we should
probably work with him more concerning the others.

Jaragh smiles at the writing, though a note of concern enters his expression
as he reads the second paragraph. As he finishes the letter he is trouble by
the last question, not sure if Mryzzle is ready for that much truth yet. As
he folds the letter he smiles again, and rubs the empty spot on his ring
finger, wondering if it has been long enough yet to answer a question of his
own.

Chapter 4

The lights are bright in the fortress at this time of day. The gray walls
reflect the sun streaming in along the battlements. A young male fela sits
on some snow in a corner of the snowy courtyard of the Fortress of Light. He
sits with his legs folded and his head appears to be slack with his chin
resting against his chest. Every now and then his head moves a bit and he
shudders. One arm comes up to wipe at his face. In his other hand he holds
a piece of parchment with writing on it. He appears to be sobbing. As he
sits there longer staring at the words on the page he begins to beat his free
hand against the ground. He snaps out of his trance when he notices his hand
is bruised and bleeding. He lifts the page again and begins to read...

My Dear Son,

Let me begin by telling you that Rebecca sends her love, and says she misses
your hugs. I myself can attest to the fact that she has been hugging me much
more with you gone. I do not complain though, as Im sure you have noticed
our attraction to one another. You arent a little fela anymore. I hear
through the grapevine that you have been taken into the Fortress as a squire!
am so very proud of you! I know you will thrive there, and it is my hope
that you will help change this world forever. The light needs you son, and
you have been a faithful son and pupil to my teaching. I look forward to the
fela you will become one day, and know the desires of your heart will lead
you far!

Like I said before, you have grown and are no longer the little fela I
paddled as a child for sneaking extra milk from the cellar. I believe you
are old enough to hear about your father. I know I have kept it from you for
a very long time, and have only told you about your mother. Even what I know
of her is limited, but Im afraid I know much more about him. Your father,
Mryzzle, was an Elite Imperial Blade when you were brought to me. He was the
vilest sort of man, enslaving anyone who got in the way of the Empire. He
was death walking to many of the fortress in his prime. He was unfortunately
cunning and crafty, but did not believe I could have had the guts to hide
you. He beat your mother within an inch of your life on the day you were
brought to me, and she later died from her wounds, but also the heartache of
leaving you. I buried her in an unmarked grave in Balator during the night
so that your Father would not find she had died so near to where you were
left. You have his wisdom son, and you are his seed, but you make your own
choices. You are my son, whom I love, and am proud of. Do not let his foul
deeds taint your mind, but do what is good and holy to right his wrongs. He
thought he was making a difference, but you truly can.

Find your way son, remember the creed, and find your joy!

With one last look at the letter the young fela wipes his tears from his
eyes, and with a look of renewed hope stands up. He looks to the east with
determination in his eyes, carefully folds the letter, and wields his spear.

The time has come for Mryzzle to make his mark, and the Empire will quake
from it.

Chapter 3

Darkness shrouds the sky as clouds make their slow way across the expanse of
the skies. As one cloud separates from another the beauty of a starry sky
can be seen between them. A lone man walks toward the Fortress with a letter
in hand, to be delivered to Mryzzle. Mryzzle is alerted of his presence by
the Fortress guardian. He makes his way from his favorite spot in the
courtyard and meets the man with a friendly growl. He promptly hands the
letter over and Myrzzle heads back to his spot, away from the commotion of
the altar room.

Dear Son,

I hope this letter finds you in good health, and doing what brings you joy.
I heard you have received my letter and Im sorry for the pain it has caused
you. I knew you would want to know though, as you are strong, despite what
you might think of yourself. I hear that you have been doing pretty well for
the Fortress, always ready and willing to fight for the light. I pray
constantly to Cador that this will continue. I know you do not follow my way
of honorable combat, but I have heard you do your best to fight your own
battles. I assume you take this approach unless your comrades are in danger.
can understand that feeling, the Knights are no more, and darkness is
spreading rampantly. Perhaps our way was to out of touch, but I will never
stray from the path.

Anyway, the ramblings of an old man. The main purpose of this letter is to
speak about something which concerns me. Son, you are a gift to the people
of this land, just like you were to me. You should not shun your brothers
the way you do, only traveling with them for defense or raiding. You have
much to offer them in the way of knowledge and heart. You were always the
most tenacious when playing games, and the most eager to learn. Mryzzle, you
must know, that your brothers and sisters of the fortress are one of your
greatest strengths. You are willing to give your life to save theirs, but
are you willing to share your heart for them to live? You must be son, you
must be.

Myrzzle turns around and grabs a small wooden box sitting behind him. He
opens it and adds this letter to the others within the box. After stowing
the box away again in a hiding place, he slowly looks up with a determined
look. "I will try father, I will try" is all he says as he stands from his
place of peace.

Chapter 2

A driving ran falls left to right as a small man makes his way along the
streets of Balator. He seems to be favoring one side and upon closer look
you notice he is hunching to protect an envelope. With the downpour of rain
even the oil coating the outside of the envelope might not protect the
contents without care. He arrives at the front door of the orphanage and
pulls the doorbell cord. He also quickly raps hits knuckles against the
door. The renowned Jaragh, Knight of Thera, answers the door and is greeted
with the protected envelope. A smile creeps across his face as he notices
the scrawl upon the front, his son has written to him. He slips the man a
few silver and thanks him for the delivery, bidding him a good night. He
quickly closes the door and with a hop in his step makes his way to his
study.

Dear Father,

I hope these dark times find you full of hope for the future. I know that
even though we are often out-numbered and opposed I find myself looking with
fondness towards what will be. I thank you so much for the letter that you
sent to me. You flatter me too much, father. I do what I can, another
soldier in the battle against the shadow. I appreciate your support and I
have enclosed a drawing for you. I hope you find it enjoyable.

You notice Jaragh stop reading the letter and pull out a small chalk drawing.
The paper is crisp and new, though slightly rumpled as if carried on a
journey. The outer edges of the paper have been burned slightly to give it
an older look, slightly reduced by the new look of the parchment. It still
gives a nice affect though to the black and white chalk drawing on the
inside. A glimpse of the picture shows two felar standing next to one
another, with small smiles upon their faces. They look confident, especially
the one smaller one. A tear forms in Jaraghs eyes as he realizes that his
son has begun to break some of his social chains. The taller felar holds a
spear in his hands, but his clothing has been smeared with different hues to
blend better with the forests. The shorter felar holds a spear in his left
hand with the point in the ground. With a smile Jaragh puts the picture down
and continues to read the letter.

As you can see father, this is a picture of me with a friend Ive made. His
name is Jarrna and he is training with the rangers to hunt the dark. He and
I did hunt down a group of three, but the dark mage was able to get away. We
did have to slay one of the others for protecting them, and continued to
chase them down. The dark mage, knowing his defeat was at hand, escaped
within an inch of his life and hid from us. Jarrna and I have traveled some
together, and Im glad to say the experience has been good. I think I may
try walking with some others, but Im not sure about a big group yet. I hope
you understand. Please tell Ms. Rebecca I miss her.

Chapter 1

The sound of silence permeates the air of the orphanage halls. This early in
the morning the only sounds come from the kitchen where the orphanages cook
prepares breakfast for the children. The patron of the orphanage, Jaragh, is
just waking up from a good nights sleep. He had the sense that last night
as he went to bed, something wonderful had happened. The familiar thump of a
thick paper striking the outer door of the orphanage rings true in Jaraghs
ears as he exits his quarters. Wondering what the news of the day is he
removes the heavy locking bar and opens the door. As he looks down upon the
newspaper he notices the heading of the Galadonian Gazette, "Mryzzle
"GoldenClaw" Defeats Ravon!" Jaraghs heart leaps with joy and anticipation
as he quickly grabs the paper and runs back to his quarters, skipping his
usual glass of juice.

"Mryzzle "GoldenClaw" Defeats Ravon!" By Deta Dresta

The scene unfolds as the Fortress prepares to defend against a horde of
Scions.The held them off when it was four of them, but then Ravon arrived
and made the battle fierce. Rumors floated around the Fortress that Ravon
had lost his soul-filled weapon, but Mryzzle was unsure of the truth of the
rumor. He let his brothers know that he would stalk Ravon from the Hall of
Fire within the Fortress, seeing an assassination as one of the only ways he
could be taken down. The Fortress had been standing strong all evening, but
now it was just Siphana, Chenush, and Mryzzle to stand against Ravon,
Shulyzara, Shenkov, Igbah and Janos. Mryzzle had earlier picked off Igbah
with Gramoak, but the dwarf had needed to take to resting. Janos had also
fallen in a fight Mryzzle was involved in, but he did not take the final
blow.

The cry rang out through the halls of the Fortress "Help, Ravon is attacking
me!" Mryzzle stands in the hall of fire, stalking him, but growing impatient
and angry at the cries of his brothers going up around him. He decides
stalking wont do, and that he will use one of his greatest skills against
him. Mryzzle takes a moment, calms his mind, and makes sure he is wielding
his mithril dagger, "fang." He steps from the woods and attempts to tiger
claw Ravon. He misses but quickly notices that Ravon is already in great
pain and fighting Siphanas Archangel. He changes his tactic and instead
kicks him with the tenacity of a phoenix. He notices he is damaging him
well, and so decides to continue it, even as the Watcher falls to the four
Scions attacking him. He continues his kicks and watches as Ravons body
crumbles under the force of the attack. Even though he won that moment, he
quickly succumbs to the bashes and mind disruptions of the others.

The orb is lost, but the feared Ravon is killed, losing some of his items to
the Fortress folks, and limiting his power and influence on the land.
Mryzzle stood proud, and quickly took to preparing for retrieval as soon as
he was able. So hail Mryzzle GoldenClaw, defender of us all.

Jaragh looks up from his reading with joy upon his face. He comes out of his
shocked state and remembers that Ms. Rebecca would want to know this
