Surin the Keeper of the Glade
DescriptionSurin is a human of average stature. Wide shoulders and suple waist give him an athletic build. Well proportioned legs hold up his torso. Black hair, almost a steel blue covers his head. Its ruffled and short, most of it swept back over his head as if to keep it out of his eyes. His eyes are deep set and have dark circles around them as if he has not slept in days. They are a deep green, and look dreamy, almost half closed yet keenly aware of the world around. There seems to be something strange about his eyes however, they are full of fire. It seems as if a demon is looking from behind these human eyes. The color of his skin is white, the veins running through his flesh are a light purple, making him look as if made of streaked marble, giving him an almost eery look.

RoleChapter 9 Background-Education-Mentality Added Mon Feb 16 23:37:33 2004 at level 1:Background and Education.
Surin was born in the wilds. His mother and father were of the Grove, the protectors of the wilderness. As he grew up his parents expected him to take up his duties and follow their footsteps. At the age of ten, Surin's education was entrusted to Bethial an ancient cloud giant druid. He excelled at his education of the wilds. He was fast, agile, intuitive, intelligent and strong. Bethial was most pleased with Surin's progress. However, there was a darkness in Surin that the old druid sensed. In his eagerness to please his superiors and elders, Surin was far more than they intended for him to be. He was bloodthirsty, cruel, he killed without remorse or thought to his prey. In his feral rage he surpassed most animals and folk.
Sometimes when he hunted he would get what it seemed to him like tunnel vision, his every sense focused on his target. He could hear their heart pound and the blood running through their veins, it was like thunder in his ears. He did not know what it was, this lust for blood that surged in him sometimes. He told the old druid about it and asked for advice. Bethial became concerned and watched Surin more carefully. Once sent on a scouting mission, he was watched by his superiors and the great druid. Surin attacked his scouting targets, instead of watching. He saw the opportunity and seized it. The spectators were unpleasantly surprised by Surin's brutality and savagery. He did not strike with a goal, he struck with hatred, in his axes was the sum of all the rage and hate in him. At that point Bethial and the rest of the forest protectors knew something was very wrong with this human. Surin knew that Bethial was not pleased by what he heard or saw, he could tell. So from that day on he began to lie. He lied to his master, to his parents and to his superiors about everything that could get him into conflict with their views.
Thus, to young Surin, deception became a way of life. He would kill at will and then lay the blame on defilers or other animals. Bethial had taught him wisdom and patience, clarity of vision with regard to hunting and prey. Surin had learned these lessons well. He had learned eloquence in speech and turned it to serve him, to flattery and deceit. His mind worked quickly and selfishly. He was obsessed with self preservation, willing to sacrifice anything to survive. He knew that as long as he was alive, he could fight later when the tide was more favorable. Surin had no concept of honor or fairness, of the need of others for anything. He served himself, at any cost. His friendship was shallow and its only purpose was to serve his needs.

RoleChapter 8 THE ESCAPE Added Mon Feb 16 23:38:56 2004 at level 1:THE ESCAPE
The young ranger soon became constricted by all the rules laid upon him, but the burden of his responsibilities and his duties. It was like a vice slowly crushing his brain. He sought a way out of his cage, as he called it.
The great plague came, a darkness that destroyed the grove and stained the wilds, killing the Great Bear. Surin felt a great power beckoning him, the darkness in his heart was rising. While the the plague took its toll, the members of the grove fled and scattered in fear. Strangely enough, Surin was not affected by it. The evil in his heart was not scared of this, it was in tune with it. It was calling him. At this point he saw his way out. He ran deep in the stained forests, far from his peers and elders. He hid, knowing all would believe he perished like so many others. He was right. Surin was abandoned as a casualty of the darkness and what was left of the Grove went far away to lick their wounds and hide. As time went on he was forgotten. At last, he was free.
To add insult to injury, he took the last name of his mentor, Bethial. He found it amusing, a jovial mockery of his past and he called himself Menethias, Surin knew it meant "Protector" in the language of the old druid.

RoleChapter 6 A DARK FASCINATION Added Mon Mar 15 01:34:09 2004 at level 21:Surin never really found comfort with the creatures of the wilds, he only found comfort in the cover provided by the plantlife. He was drawn however, by the dark side of nature. As he got older this attraction grew. Creatures that most travelers fear or find repulsive, Surin enjoyed. He delighted to watch them hunt and kill their prey. They deceived and surprised their prey, much like he does. He found joy in the company of spiders, snakes, scorpions and other such vile things. Deer, wolves, bears and such, he regarded as food. Sometimes, he liked to venture out into the putrid swamps, festering with foul life. It held a fascination for him, it beckoned him.
A large scorpion appeared once in a while from the wilderness and crawled up his leg. Surin often feeds it from his own blood or from the blood of his fallen prey. He enjoys watching it feast, then releases it back into the dark wilderness.

RoleChapter 5 OBSESSION TAKES HOLD Added Fri Mar 19 02:31:11 2004 at level 24:Change of Self and Diet
As his obsession with the foul creatures of nature grew, Surin begins to see himself as one of them. He saw his axes as the the pincers that tried to tear flesh from bone and his foes limb from limb. The scorpion was his favorite, slow and lethargic behavior in normal circumstances, yet fast and deadly when he intends to kill. His armor was the hard plating covering these creatures and his teeth their jaws.
Using a fine rock, Surin filed a little of his four front teeth of both jaws leaving the canines to seem longer in comparison. He sharpened the canines to a point to make piercing flesh easier. For meals he began to grow less and less dependent of naturally occuring foods, such as vegetables and fruits. They left him with an empty feeling. He only used them to clean his mouth somewhat of the foul stench of rotting flesh. Some would label him as a cannibal. He delighted in the taste of sentient beings and loved elves most of all. Wood elves, dark elves, high elves, or any combination of elven blood, it didnt really matter. Their tender muscle and flesh was a delicacy.
Other creatures satisfied his hunger but he did not get the same felling of ecstasy, it was more like surviving, not living. These other meals did little but fill his stomach.
He carried a small vial of poison with him, herb poison. He liked to lace the steaks he made from corpses with it, enough to tender the flesh even more. He was aware that he was not yet immune to the poison but in small quantities, over time, he hoped he would become so. Scorpions, spiders and snakes use their poison to kill and disolve the innards of their prey.

RoleChapter 4 ON DECEPTION AND EXPERIENCES Added Tue Mar 30 20:49:31 2004 at level 30:Ever since Surin started to meet others, travelers from all walks of life, he realized the importance of keeping his intentions and his nature hidden from their eyes. He has managed to deceive almost everyone about what really lies in his heart, the darkness within.
He deceived the Melfie, a warrior, into following him deep in the woods. It is unlikely that Melfie would have followed him if she knew Surin was a darkling. However, through eloquence and trusting words Surin dragged her far into the wilds, there he killed her while she slept.
In another instance, he greeted the paladin Audriel when he approached wood elf city. He had not learned to move in the woods silently yet and thought his presence will alert the paladin. Surin put her at ease, soothing her mind and heart, until she fought. He pounced on her and tore her limb from limb.
One day in the Grove, Surin ran across a paladin. An elf, Zykym was his name. The Paladin was sleeping, Surin got himself ready for the kill when a large orc jumped the elf. Not being able to kill the orc at the time, Surin let them fight and called a lightwalker conjurer, Calcifer to aid the elf paladin and kill the orc. The orc however, in his cowardice, dissapeared and the conjurer thanked Surin for his help. He left, leaving the paladin where he was, with Surin. As Zykym prepared to leave the grove, Surin now unhindered by others, surprised the paladin with a powerful strike from the bushes. The paladin ran, but he could not outrun Surin. Zykym only made it to the pond where Surin ponced on him again, ripping his heart out. Then he laced the steaks from the elf corpse with poison and stored them to be marrinated and eaten later. For his deception to work, Surin is very careful. Around people who can see him, he takes care not to alert them of his nature by not wearing or exposing any items which might give it away. There is no need to reveal his true self unless he benefits from it. When he wished to trade with an imperial thief, he made sure the thief know of Surin's deark heart, but not of the Imperials who's blood was still on Surin's axes. He reveals no more and no less than what he needs to, causing others to break the rules of their lives or their Cabal, without knowing it. He never tells anyone what hes really thinking.

RoleChapter 2 TATTOO Added Tue Apr 20 20:49:55 2004 at level 37:Surin's life of deception and aversion has grown to fruitition. His way of life has been noticed by the Gods and his body has been tattooed by the Gaping Maw of the Lord of Deception, the Imp, Lyristeon.
Every deceptive thought and act, thought up by the calculating mind of Surin has been successful. Everyone he betrayed never knew it. He has become a priest by just leading his life as his natural instincts and his heart had let him, slaughtering all of the Empire soldiers who crossed his path and into his woods. He has betrayed them, lied to them, killed them, robbed them, all to prevent them from spreading the cage that they have built for themselves.
They have all known the Spider, as some call him, and few have lived an encounter with his savagery and cunning.

RoleChapter 1 THE DARK CALLING Added Wed May 5 23:02:03 2004 at level 45:Surin has been spending more and more time in the witch woods. The darkness and sorrow of the realms call to him in the night. Whispers, chanting and howls beckon him. It began as he reached his mature years. When his eyes had seen enough and his body experienced enough. He hears the Demon Elf, the Witch Sisters and the other infernal creatures call out his name, like Sirens calling to the sailors.
He feels his body is a shell for something that is too savage and too powerful to be contained in human form. His spirit cries to break out. He is not sure what is causing this, but the visions and dreams he has at night are of an infernal nature. As if the spirit of a great fiend calls to him. The sprit of a great betrayer, merciless, cunning, wicked. He hears the cry of souls among a chorus of shreeking spiders, their hisses and crackling almost deafening. Shrieks and screams come from creatures caught in their snares and webs. His natural attraction to spiders and creatures of the dark now beings to make a little sense to him.
Like thunder, in his dreams, echoes the maniacal laughter of the Ancient Imp, whos name he did not know until he faced him. The Great Deceiver to which every fiber of his being was drawn...Lyristeon, whos mark Surin now carries.
Surin thinks the Witch Woods will offer clues as to what his purpose is on this land. Why he was born the way he was, why his betrayl of the Grove took place, why this savagery and inherent evil are in his blood.
