#28317, "FAQ: How to apply to the staff (updated 5/28/07)"

Much of this is a synopsis of helpfiles like 'help hero' (available at level 51), though some of this is from our practical experience with new staff.

1) First, ask yourself honestly if you have the necessary experience as a player to be able to add to the game. Specifically, you should have at least a couple hero-level characters under your belt who were notable in some fashion. Also, your schedule should be compatible with learning a new skill set-- you should expect to be online fairly consistently over the coming months. You will need to be a skilled roleplayer, and proficient in written English.

2) Make your intentions known through a 'note to immortal'. You don't need to do this immediately on reaching level 51, but neither should you wait until you're about to die of old age or CON loss. Pick a time when you think you've made enough of a name for yourself that some of the imms will know who you are, and write your note. The note can be IC or OOC; people have done it both ways and had it work out. Do what you feel comfortable with.

3) After some time, a staff member will contact your character to talk informally. You'll be asked about your experience with the game, any previous experience as a staff member here or elsewhere, and how you feel you can contribute. Please be honest-- nothing sinks an application faster than an answer we learn is false. If you have had problems with our rules in the past, it is better to explain that up front.

4) If that interview goes well, we may give you a small (OOC) task to complete while staff members discuss your application. This may include descriptive work, hypothetical scenarios which you would have to manage, or other tasks which will help us assess how prepared you are to contribute to the game in this fashion. Some questions will be asked "live", and others can be done offline and emailed in. Completing this promptly and skillfully will greatly strengthen your application.

5) We can take up to a week or two from the time of the interview to come to a consensus-- key staff members may be out of town for a few days, there may be a difference of opinion, and we don't like to rush a decision. We will endeavor to get back to you as soon as possible, and we will explain the reasons for our decision whether it is a yes or a no. If accepted, you'll receive further instructions from there.
