Think of it this way:

Onslaught adds damage.

Cripple adds crippling, but subtracts a fair bit of damage.

Combine those two and you get an ambush that cripples but probably still doesn't do as much damage as a normal ambush (since, I think, the damage penalty to cripple is greater than the damage bonus from onslaught), and is a lot less likely to land.
