Desecration was not checking that items were blessed before allowing them to be used in the ritual. The new code will check that items or blessed before incorporating them in the ritual (though non-blessed items are still destroyed); that is, the ritual will complete so long as an Orc has at least one blessed item is used, but non-blessed items will be destroyed and ignored in the process.
