Chapter 1

"RUN!"

The last thing Eria's mother said to her as the slavers descended upon their
city was a command uttered in blind panic that she flee. She thought of this
moment often as she wandered the endless caverns of the Underdark, lost and
alone. Her mother, the matriarchal leader of their family, being reduced to
animal instincts and frenzied fear bothered the dark-elf far more than the
knowledge that the woman would likely spend the remainder of her days as a
slave.

Knowing the landscape outside what had been her subterranean city had been one
thing, but traversing it turned out to be quite another. There was no shortage
of food and water for those with the skill to find them, and for Eria those
classes had been her favorite, but the wild caves are cruel and uninviting
things full of terrors. It is hard to understand the depths and breadth of
that cruelty until you are amongst them. Still though, Eria knew how to
survive amongst these lands in which she had been raised.

Being alone in the caves, moving as much out of habit as caution, gave a great
deal of time for contemplation. When at last she emerged from the twisting
passages and found herself along the shores of the great underground sea,
young Eria had made a decision. With a broken rock in her hand, standing tall
against the endless waters of that massive ocean, she made a blood pact
between herself and any Divine that would listen. Spilling her dark blood into
the water, she vowed that she would never find herself in the position of her
mother. If she could not find power within these caves, the rest of her blood
could join her sacrifice. Alone amongst the broken rocks of this forgotten
shore, she vowed that death would find her before weakness.
