Chapter 12

His body is now beginning to show some of the wear of war, not quite as hearty
as he once was, but balanced somewhat by the lessons learned gaining those scars.
Watching one or two of his brothers has led him to something of a middle ground.
He was impressed by Lohakahn's fearless charge into enemy territory, but at the
same time thought it reckless and wasteful. And their last discussion was how
the svirf thought it was ok for two applicants to fight one imperial warrior
together, two against one. Drothgar vehemently opposed this position. There
are many who can work in a forge, and many who can fight in an army, but in the
end there is but smith on the weapon, and but one warrior in each fight. He is
no knight to think of honor but rather believes that a level of courage is a
measure of a person and you lose integrity and dignity if you join with the many
to fight the one. That is how the blade crumbles, with too many hammers. To be
true you must have your own strength. That does not mean you cannot be part of
a greater group, but that you must own your deeds, must have some self-sufficiency
and must shun the ways of those that would take advantage of simple numbers.
When such a situation arose, and the mage fell to Drothgar's flail, he refused to
carve a trophy from the corpse. He was not sorry in any way that the mage fell,
but there was no great victory to be enshrined by a trophy. You can't have scars
to cherish and show with pride if you are always playing it safe. Not reckless
mind you, but not overly cautious, either. It is a lifelong path to find that
proper middle ground, and a challenge he will never finish. It's in the doing
that greatness may perhaps be born.
