8017, Learning Rates based on equipment
Posted by NewTrapper on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've been noticing this and decided to try something out recently - how fast skills go up based on different types of equipment. Wearing a full set of snow worm gear, metal and barbaric clothing vs padded vest, cloth, and glasses.
My results? I learned about twice as fast with the different set of clothing - and none of it effect my intelligence/wisdom at all.
So what gives? Was the random generator crazy or under the code of CF does material effect learning rates in some way? Or is it based on +hit/+dam roll, or level of gear?
I'm not asking for specifics hear from any the Immortals, but just a Nepenthe-type answer saying "yes, gear can effect how fast you learn even if it doesn't effect int/wis".
Any Imms willing to reply?

The helpfile on 'skill improvement' is comprehensive. Wearing snow worm gear doesn't matter.

8020, Comprehensive, not all-inclusive

From help skill improvement "The main factors are:" and then it lists off the main factors.
However, from help morale, you get "High morale bolsters confidence and sharpens the senses, making one succeed more readily with many skills and even learn faster
So, it would seem that there are some minor factors (at the very least morale) which aren't listed out in the help skill improvement list. Not so major as New Trapper seemed to indicate in his post though.

Actually, I believe that refers to experience and not skill improvements. I don't have the code handy though. Don't quote me on that.

8035, and healers aren't negatively affected by dam roll

but that was a joke. The guy doesn't say what skill he was trying to improve nor which set of gear was best.
For example, a thief will dodge more in fine gear than in snow worm (it's heavier). So some actual information about what he's trying to do would be condusive to the discussion. (for example how many improvements did he measure over?)

8118, And here lies part of the problem with CF.

When this imm told me morale improved learning, I was praying because for some reason I had the drunk effect on me, without having had a drink. I prayed, and was told by "An Immortal" 'Don't let it bother you unless drunkspeak annoys you. Being drunk improves morale and that helps your spell improvements". I was playing (obviously) a mage at the time.
This was stated to me as fact, and actually took me by surprise when it happened. Now when an imm tells someone "this is a fact" and then that "fact" turns out to just not in fact BE a fact, it helps to fuel the rumors you all seem to find so amusing. I'm not trying to cause problems, but things like this are (sometimes) the root of the rumors you all like to mock.
