70539, Inconsistency in ranger staffs
Posted by Ranger stranger on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
There seems to be some odd inconsistencies between hometerrain and the bonus progs on ranger weapons. For Mariner the staff does not do the drown attack and the harpoon only does it on/in water. But swamp works for both weapon types even in civilization. Mountain prog appears to work in any wilderness and at least on staff.

Yeah, some of the bonuses work outside home terrain and others don't. When they do it is always at a reduced rate.

All by design, though.
70551, would you consider
Posted by Ranger stranger on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Would you consider changing the damage type when the target is immune to drown? Virtually all mobs in and on water are immune. You could potentially track mobs to water but you would need to give most a boat as well. As an ability it’s area of usefulness has such a strong double constraint that you could reasonably play 100 hours without any gain, which makes it merely decorative.

Maybe more broadly look at if simply having water breathing should grant immunity to water attacks. I mean air breathers are not immune to air attacks, in fact flying works as a penalty for some air spells. Mechanically someone suspended in water would also struggle when a lot is suddenly displaced.

Alternatively, considering mariners get stormcalling, it wouldn't be unreasonable to have harpoons prog lightning.
70540, Likely..

Just a spell specific thing. Drowning spells not being possible without water and all that jazz.
70545, Not consistent

There are magical weapons in-game that have drowning attacks on land.
Since ranger weapons are magical, there wouldn't really be an issue there
with having them prog water attacks.

Also the frequency of ranger weapon progs was all over the place last I checked (they prog a lot vs mobs but almost never vs PCs)

I can't think of one, unless you're talking about water melee types.

edit: Oh, you are. Yeah no way, a free 28+ avg drowning weapon? gtfo here.

Anyway drown only works in water and I don't imagine they want to put engulf or geyser on the thing given how much stronger they are.
70549, I'm rusty but
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Doesn't the sword of tcar geyser?
70550, Wow, you're right.
Posted by robdarken_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It does engulf. I need to play a storm sword someday.

Also that guy wasn't talking about a drowning attack type, my bad.

I agree with him, feels like mariners already lose the most out of their terrain (though that net on the log board was looking beastly), it seems reasonable to throw together a water spell on par with drown just for the ranger weapon, and maybe give it to deluge too. Engulf or geyser are probably too much for a ranger staff.
70555, I think mariners are fine
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Having played one.

Harpoon allows you to do something that no other ranger can which is an unblockable (generally) hit which drops strength (and Dex if I recall), causing bleeding, but most importantly is stackable. You can drop people's strength hugely with harpoon.

Given that I'm not sure you need progs.
70556, How about bedouins?
Posted by robdarken_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Those are looking pretty awful.

Never had anything but caverners and foresters here.

Group based direct damage is really good.

Shows what I know about rangers. Is it worth losing bearcharge and snare? I thought mariners lost bearcharge too but I was wrong.
70561, It’s situational
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
But you really need 2 size advantage to make bearcharge shine so it’s not that big a loss for non giants. Losing snare hurts because it’s just a great skill for all sorts of reasons. But if you expect to fight a lot of groups or people with very good damage avoidance defenses then dervish dance is king among ranger skills. Being an explorer used to make you a ranger killer with 2 hour dirt kick and dirt resistance(dirt ambush). But it doesn’t work outside deserts anymore that way with wanderlust.

Group based direct damage is really good.
70548, Deluge only progs on water
Posted by Kstatida on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
So it's at least half-consistent.
