It's about mercenaries.

And despite in-game efforts, it's never been fully explained. I understand not using mercs to PK, but for carrying EQ or PvE, I don't get it.

Its up to the individual to interpret based on their role.

Arguably you could say no Villager (especially Berserkers) should group up to rank as theoretically there's no difference IC between a player and a NPC.

Even if it isn’t I’d be completely blown away if you were not given the boot for it.

First if someone jumps you while you rank you’re now PKing with a merc.

Second it goes against the pride of being a villager and the parity rules. You don’t HIRE someone to do your fighting for you.

You can work as a team with other Villagers but you can’t be a big puss and hire a merc to do your fighting for you. That’s really what it comes down to.

It is in there somewhere that mercs are considered slaves and are against dogma because of previous enslavement in village history. OG villagers were mage mercs until they got power hungry and destroyed themselves.
