61638, Savage blow question about terrain.
Posted by Savage Ranger on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Are there really some terrains where savage blow does not lag? I read that desert and marsh does not lag, is that true? Thank you.
61643, All the savage blow effects as I know them

First, it always lags you 2 rounds no matter what, hit/miss/size/STR/ranger combo are all irrelevant, you'll always get lagged 2 rounds.

Second, savage blow effects that depend on terrain are fixed across ranger combos, the same for everyone. Lag used to be fixed too (always 2 rounds when it hit, not dependent on other factors) not sure if that's still true.

Forest: lags victim 2 rounds, no extra effects
Mountains: lags victim 2 rounds, can knock victim out (very rare, size difference is a factor)

Water: don't know
Caves: don't know

Civilized: no lag on victim, no extra effects
Swamp: no lag on victim, can plague or poison (maybe both, not sure)
Desert: no lag on victim, don't know about extra effects
Plains: no lag on victim, can send victim out of the room

When it landed, which was never.
61650, In a forest?
Posted by Kstatida on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Because I have experience of knocking people out in mountains as a mountaineer, and never in forest.

Perhaps home terrain comes into play...
61653, I played 600+ hours as forester savage, never knocked someone out in forest
Posted by -flso on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
In mountains sure.
61655, Tell me what the echo is and I'll see if I can find an example.
Posted by Homard on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I don't log everything, but I may have it.

Pretty sure I knocked Aufang out once or twice, too, so he may have it, too.
61656, Found it!

Before a Fortified Hillock
A large mound of earth has been pushed up here, forming a strategically
planned barrier to the village just beyond. Behind the earthen barricade
stand the gates -- heavy, massive, fortified iron gates that require much
muscle-power to move -- and beyond them you can see the faces of numerous
huts, most looking as rugged as the hills before you. In the distance,
people move about within the secluded village, and smoke drifts up from
various campfires and cookstoves. The gruff sound of barbaric voices drifts
to you on the wind, as does the occasional burst of laughter and clang of
metal.

Aufang the felar is sleeping here.

Show me a knock out on forest or swamp or desert or civilized or plains ...
You won't find any.

Umiron just said ranger hometerrain is not a factor in savageblow, so I assume that wraps everything up.
61658, It does.
Posted by Homard on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I was going on the supposition that your preferred terrain was the deciding factor in what bonus effects you'd get.

But it looks like the terrain itself decides what happens, right?
61649, By 2 round lag, do you mean trip lag?
Posted by Kstatida on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Because 2/1 is more like my experience. I didn't research it too deeply though.
61651, I mean 2 rounds of lag, i don't know what 2/1 is
Posted by -flso on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Victim will always get unlagged before you though, so is guaranteed next command.
61683, RE: I mean 2 rounds of lag, i don't know what 2/1 is
Posted by Kstatida on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
By 2/1 I mean you get lagged for 2 rounds, opponent for 1. Trip is not 2/1, it's 2/2-pulse, so the opponent has only one pulse guaranteed (if no cheapshot). Subjectively, many of the lagging moves give less lag to the opponent than trip does, so I generally call them 2/1. I'm not sure I get this correctly though.

Savage blow is among those moves that seem to give lag for less time than trip.

Water: lags like trip both on the surface AND underwater

Cave: trip lag and chance for ko

Hills: trip lag and chance for ko

Desert: no lag and a chance for an aoe dirt kick type effect

I never saw a ko in mountains, just lag. I also always had it do the send out of the room effect in plains. Super handy for fighting whip specs or necros.
61661, Since we're in a sharing mood...
Posted by Umiron on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Forest / Trail: Lag and damage.

Desert: Damage and AoE blindness.

Water / Underwater: Lag, reduced damage.

Mountain / Hill / Cave: Lag, damage, chance to knockout.

Field: Lag, damage, can send victim sprawling into adjacent room.

Swamp: Reduced damage, poison/plague.

Anything else: Damage.

Cold rooms: Chill touch like effect (regardless of sector).

- Sucks if you're ganging, like most lagging abilities.
- Don't wear metal armor.
- High strength helps, high opponent dex hurts.
- Level difference matters against NPCs.
61662, cool beans. thanks . nt

61670, Awesome info...
Posted by Tac on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Add to helpfile/wiki? I suppose I could do the wiki part...
61672, RE: Awesome info...
Posted by Umiron on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If people want to organize that kind of info somewhere that's fine with me, but I'm still a firm believer that the helpfiles don't need to be that verbose 99% of the time.
61673, I know some (most?) of the staff disagrees
Posted by -flso on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
but I wish this sort of information was available for every skill.

It would make theory crafting and planning builds a lot more straightforward.
I wouldn't have to sink 30-50 hours (probably more these days) to power rank something and find out if what I had in mind will work or not.

Also I think I can safely assume that a lot of skills have effects that are very
difficult for us to discover unless we coordinate with others and "test" things
together. Even then, some of the effects could depend on factors that are not
present all the time.
61674, RE: I know some (most?) of the staff disagrees
Posted by Umiron on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I hear ya.

It's just not a priority for me. If another coder (i.e., someone who can write with authority on how things actually work) wants to put in the man hours updating the helpfiles to be on par with a modern MMO guide I won't stop them, but it probably won't be me any time soon.

But again, go nuts. Put it on the wiki. That's what it's there for.
61677, Thanks. I like seeing no-bs explanations of game mechanics like this.
Posted by Anonymous1 on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
With that said, can we start regularly putting this sort of direct, complete information in helpfiles for skills and edges? Is anything stopping this from happening (other than a lack of manpower?) 3.5 D&D manuals handle this expertly by having a "fluff" section, and then a no-nonsense explanation of what the actual game mechanics are below.

Vagueness for the sake of vagueness is not fun for anyone, and probably contributes to low playerbase count by forcing newbs to gamble their con figuring out the details of their skills and edges.

You might find it cute that this guy is willing to delete over SB not doing what he thought it did, but it's probably a pretty crappy experience for him to waste that many hours and get something he didn't expect, don't you think?

EDIT: I missed that this discussion is already going on above. Well, at least I'm not alone in thinking this.
61684, Awesome
Posted by Kstatida on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Too bad you can't be savage explorer to utilize them all effectively.
61639, Correct.

Does home terrain act as a factor in anything but success rate?
