60720, Frostreaver axe request
Posted by frostyreaver on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Hi immortals. Judging by the description and the name, one would think the Frostreaver axe would have a cold attack. It is presently cleave and this is a request to make it cold as all the other hero level axes with non physical attacks seem to be flagged magical.
Thank you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- a large battleaxe named 'Frostreaver' can be referred to as 'axe reaver Frostreaver battle battleaxe'. It is worth 5328 copper, and is of the 48th level of power. It is an axe with an attack type of cleave. It is made of steel and weighs 17 pounds 15 ounces. It can cause 4d12 points of damage, at average 26. It has been imbued with a blessing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
l frostreaver This axe is quite impressive looking, with a massive twin-bladed head, and a handle easily three or four feet in length. All along both blades as well as the shaft are crystals of ice and frost, spreading out to lightly cover it. Despite a great deal of wear and tear on the axe, between nicks and dents on the blade, dried blood encrusted on it, and the dark smoothness of the handle worn down by use, it appears to be in excellent condition beneath the ice. Wiping away some of the ice to test the blade, you find it is still sharp enough to split even the smallest of hairs, not to mention heads. Not a few seconds after the ice crystals are wiped away, though, new ones seem to form in their place right before your eyes.

You're welcome.
Possibly also Nightbringer.
Maybe even Flesh Render.
If those are all magical, sorry.

60721, Well...

You make a reasonable argument, but you also make a very good case for why this axe would be magical too. D'oh?

It is blessed, therefore it cannot be magical!

Seems like almost any non-physical-attack weapon that isn't positive/negative, i.e. cases where you can imagine an explanation that doesn't involve magic, should be flagged magic.
Flaming sword? Magic. Perpetually frozen axe? Magic. Icicle that never melts? Magic. Mace with electricity arcing off it for no apparent reason? Gotta be magic.
That's not a rant. Just seems like "realism" should screw ragers out of most non-physical-attack weapons. From a game-balance p.o.v. maybe not.

60724, the flaming flames of the inferno!

Divine weapons would be an exception. We technically view those objects as divinely created/empowered and not magical.

In general I'm okay with this. Like Scar said, there is a route area authors can take if they want to do non-physical damage types on non-magical weapons, and in fact we (somewhat) recently added some additional area infrastructure to make this a little bit more formal under the hood.
With regards to this specific axe, I actually have no clue. I'd have to go look at the obj and it's mob to figure out what I think sounds right, though generally I side with the area author unless the scenario strikes me as particularly wrong.
