6020, What to do?
Posted by WildGirl on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Umm.. so what does one actually DO as a hero? I finally reached it for the first time and I'm completely bored and mystified. Get better stuff? Seems trivial... Help young ones? Not if there aren't any on... It looks easy when you haven't been there yet, but once you get there, its nothing but a wall. I suppose roleplay your pants off and hope to get noticed by the Imms, but that's not the sole reason I play. Hmm...

I think level 51 is the time to really cut down and focus on something "positive" you want your character to accomplish. If you're caballed, lean forward and push your cabal's goals - maybe steer it in a direction you like. If you're part of a religion, lean forward and push your religion's goals - try to influence other players. And so on. Basically, level 51 strips away a bunch of mechanics stuff that has been looming over you, the player, for c.100 hours (levelling) and now you have time to focus on things that can be more fun and productive.
But the best framing of the issue was done by Fortcoeur, when he hit level 50 and wanted my character to get just one more level with him. At the time, Fortcoeur was a somewhat anonymous Knight of Thera (a now-dormant CF cabal). Fortcoeur said something to the effect of:
"I want to get this ranking done with so I can focus on being a good Knight."
Fortcoeur ended up leading the Knights of Thera and reached "CF legendary" status. Anyway, that's the quote I try to keep in mind when I hit hero. It's weird, but for me, when I delete a hero character in situations where my real life didn't intervene, it's almost like admitting a failure to generating a positive.

I remember reading somewhere that the Imms said something along the lines of Heroing isnt everything and the general jist of the message was that you shouldnt wait til hero to RP. Rank a bit, RP/PK a bit, rank a bit more, repeat. It shows consistancy with your role and helps to get some of that legendary status before you really open that can of whoop-assĀ© at hero.

All that's true.
Nonetheless, I'm generally a big fan of getting to Hero. Few things suck worse than a mage/communer with nine ranks on you.

6026, What I learned.

In my experience. As someone who has deleted probably 15+ heros out of boredom before finding out the magic formula, there is one thing that can make it fun to be a hero.
And that is planning for that boredom before you roll up the character, and putting that planning into a role.
But not just any role.
If you make a role that requires almost *ANYTHING* from anyone else...even imms...for you to have fun with it....you will often get bored with it or delete in frustration.
With Odrirg, I made a role that was fun for me, and I asked myself....what am I going to do as a hero?
I was sure I could get into tribby, but after that, I didn't want to rely on anything....so I told myself, before I even rolled the character, "If I am a perpetual magistrate of seantryn at hero, what am I going to do to keep myself busy".
To answer that question, I came up with a number of things to work towards that required no immteraction.
Alright, I'm going a law character...so when there are criminals about, I'll hunt criminals....(and believe me, I learned alot about thera while doing that)
What about when there are no criminals? Well....It's always been a pet peeve of mine that noone really tries to RP their ETHOS....and I wanted to see if I could get away with being rabidly anti-chaos in rager-fashion and keep empowerment as a goodie hunting goodies....so if no criminals, I hunted chaotics.
What if there were no criminals or chaotics that I can pk? Boy, sitting in town as a magistrate can be boring...what can I do to make that interesting?
Well, I noticed that ruined city was ...well...ruined. So I took something that was going on in game, and came up with something that would make me talk to just about everyone logged on....keeping track of donations, convincing people it was the right thing to do....etc.
And if I got tired of that...heck...I'm a priest...why don't I proselytize my religion?
So I had 4 things I could do that I thought I could have fun with which didn't depended on anyone, really.
And, I knew that if I got bored with any of the above...beign a tribby allows some amount of political rp, not to mention the plan to spend alot of time fighting sylvans at the grove (which turned into fighting outlanders at the tree, when the cabals changed).
So, before I rolled the char, I had in my mind a list of five things to do that I thought would be FUN to do at hero. 1) hunt crims. 2) hunt chaotics. 3) Ruined city fund. 4) religion preaching. 5) fight sylvan cabal. In the beginning of being a hero, there was also alot of time spent gathering things like haste/stoneskin/pass door/shield/aura.....but that got WAY boring for me, and as time went on I bothered about them less and less.
So my advice is this. Next time you play a character, take a look at what is going on in Thera right now. Think up some goals that your CHARACTER, not YOU, would have, and plan for hero life with that in mind. And like you said, rp and only rp isn't the reason almost any of us play this game...so plan on some pk as well.
I know it's kinda cliche to say, but I've found that it really is the case....
If you have a role that *YOU* have fun with nomatter what is going on...you are going to be more fun for the Imms to watch....and you will get more notice by imms and other characters as well.....and that in and of itself lends itself to more fun and intricate things to keep things interesting at hero.

That's the irony. If you make a character intended to get IMMteraction, you really don't since you're always trying to please someone else and get annoyed/bored and it shows.
However, if you make one YOU like and YOU enjoy playing and YOU enjoy logging on with, IMMteraction comes because when you have fun, you look more appealing, I think. :D
Start your own quests, have your own goals, you'd be amazed at what can happen......
Have a real ROLE, as well as one with chapters. :P

Sounds like you've played to many MMORGS's where everything revolves around gaining levels which takes forever. Once you reach hero there are many things to do.
1. PK! 2. RP - Most of the better RP avenues are open to Heroes 3. Explore - At the top of your class you can now explore the more interesting places in Thera. 4. Gear Hoarding - Nothing like being decked out in shinies.

Well one idea is to have a role that really fits within the confines of the game, so that when you hero, your role doesn't stagnate, it only gets betters. Since you don't have to worry about ranking anymore, which does take up a reasonable amount of time, you can dedicate your free time to doing whatever pleases you, from evolving the role, to exploring one of the many areas you wouldn't even have a chance at if you hadn't heroed. I think just by heroing, you have more voice if you want to try to affect Thera as a whole whether through great RP, powerful PK, both, or just a clever idea that catches on. Basically, at hero, do what you want. It can be a true test of roleplay and PK, since you're pitted against the rest that survived the storm, with wits and blade.
This is an unofficial message of The Carrion Fields organization...
