60082, Protection Question
Posted by Aufang on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is there any sort of way to predict or influence what kind of protection (evil or good) you get as a neutral when you use a protection prep?

It just seems random to me.

With my nexun I got the impression it was linked to the balance in the world. However it was backwards to me. It seemed when evil was strong I would get protection from good and vice versa.
Probably is random.
60125, That's vanguard

Not protection, iirc.

It also works according to the law chaos balance too.
60128, nope, talking about protection
Posted by ANotherPlayer on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
When you quaff a protection potion it will tell you if you feel protected from evil or from good. It seemed to me when evil was strong I was getting protected from good and vice versa. I am not saying there is a connection just that it felt like there might be. In fact I stopped using protection because I would not be fighting good creatures when evil is strong.

60090, I never quite understood why...
Posted by Calion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
...it was changed back in the day to work on neutrals, so that they got additional protection vs. good or evil, while the good or evil guys got nothing in return vs. neutral. Esp. given the powergamer tendency to choose a neutral alignment (when possible) to bypass enemies' protection ability (and now they might even get this protection for themselves against these enemies, depending on circumstances).

But at least it's good to hear that neutrals don't get the full 25% benefit.

As a neutral it's a 50/50 proposition.

Protection from good/evil works just fine on neutrals, though they get slightly less reduction.

As far as I am aware, there isn't a way to predict/influence it. I believe it is intended to act like this on purpose, because while you can get lucky and get the protection you want your good/evil opponent will never get protection vs neutral.
60083, Protection is pointless on a neutral
Posted by Bemused on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It doesn't give you any resistance.

That wasn't my understanding of how it worked.

Protection evil is protection evil. Same with good.
Which is what you get on a neutral, either good or evil.
Be it on a good or neutral, I suppose you could have it on an evil too. (Evils can get the anti-hero edge that does while still being evil I think)

It grants the same dam redux in all cases.
60089, So is that :P

They get slightly less reduction.

I have to say I never noticed a difference in the dam redux amount.
I wonder if I could use a healer to test the dam reduction numbers by having my protections interfere with a set 100 hp heal.

I can't imagine it's much different. Maybe 20% instead of 25%.
60096, I guess I missed that memo
Posted by Bemused on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It USED to never do anything. Which makes sense since good/evil cannot get prot vs neutral.

Now it doesn't make sense and in actual fact it is quite retarded. When that change was made?
60097, It's acted this way as long as I have played the game nt

Hey, you're still alive?

But yes I'm absolutely still alive. I still play fairly regularly, I've just cut it back a bit to focus on some other priorities in life.
