59964, Question if I may
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
How do down times impact on anti hoarding code?

Does the code only look at up time? Or are you fresh out of luck if it happened to be down the one time you could log in for a bit?

The MUD does not "account" for down time, so if we were down for a significant length of time (i.e., many days) then we would need to jerry-rig the code to be more lenient for that month.

The recent downtime should not impact anyone, gear/preps wise, unless they were already on the cusp of being hit by the code anyway, at which point I'm fine with that.

If it goes down tomorrow, for example, it would make the difference between me not playing for around 12 days vs not playing for around 6 days?

Not the difference between not playing for 12 days vs 11 days and 23 hours.

Given the rarity of downtime is there any chance of resetting whatever clock exists?

Disclaimer: I only very briefly skimmed the relevant code.

We look at two things: 1) how long it's been since a character last played, and 2) how much time a character has played in a one month period. For the purposes of the latter, that's using what I guess you might call a rolling one month, per character, based on their roll date / login patterns.

There is currently no way for us to interfere with these processes besides messing with individual pfiles (which of our active staff, only one person can do) or writing a temporary exclusion into the code. Even if we went down for a few days, I doubt anyone would think to bother with this in time, assuming the opportunity even arose at all since the server will attempt to boot the MUD on its own. Another way to look at it: it hasn't been a problem since these features began appearing back in 1998.
59971, Re not a problem since 1998

Back then I was much freer to play. Now it my ability to play is much more restricted, with a combo of work, finding new work (since my current job is going) and a gf who hates it if I play. Being abroad means filling the gap until my return to the uk is problematic. This was never the case in my younger days. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is more restricted than they used to be.
59972, Just a thought...

If you have time to keep responding to this thread and talking about how you have no time to log in... You probably could have just logged in and avoided any potential headache of the code dinging you.
59974, To be fair

Posting can be done from a phone during a spare 2 minutes here and there, a login requires minimum 1/2 hour sat at a computer with 100% focus and no interruptions.

Time investment is a requirement to keep limited gear. Making exceptions because someone doesn't have the time defeats the whole purpose of the mechanic in the first place.

I sympathize with incognito, I'm sure it sucks losing great gear because you don't have time to play, but that's par for the course. Stands to reason that at least one piece of his limited gear was probably purged off someone not playing enough for him to get it too!
59978, Actually I don't think any of my gear was
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Since I don't gear from mobs.

Also the gear I am concerned about can't be obtained by others if it crumbles from me, to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks for the sympathy tho (genuinely no sarcasm!).
59980, Of course

I was just white knighting from the snark. Time to post =/= time to play
59977, Unfortunately not.

Since I can't play from mobile phone, and the issue is that my other half hates cf and would make my life hell for months if I logged on with her around. I had planned to play on a specific day but now have a key job interview to prepare for, which I have to prioritise since the job I'm in has been scrapped by the company that took us over.

The reason I made the point isn't just for me though. I'm sure others have been hit so I thought I'd raise the issue with you. There's clearly no appetite to allow for the potential impact of the mud being down so I'll leave it there.

59969, I don't see this happening, FWIW.

Keep in mind the code doesn't just look for "Did Bob log in during this time period?" but "Did Bob play enough total hours during this time period?"

So in your example, if Bob is gone for an extended period and his one day that he had to log in for a couple hours means we're down, well, Bob should probably get hit by the code anyways.
59970, This is at odds with what umi says
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
As he says one of the two things looked at is time since last play, which anecdotally seems to fit for me.

Also note that if some gear poofs no one else can gather it anyway if hell is shut.
59973, Hell is shut?
Posted by KaguMaru on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
That would explain why people aren't playing Empire anymore.
59975, Clarification:
Posted by Umiron on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
For limited gear purging specifically, the MUD is concerned with how much time you've put in within a given 30 day period.
59979, Ok, I'm confused
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
But that sounds much better. I can live with that because that means the impact of downtime is much more limited.

Thanks!

If I get hit with the code now I won't think it is so unlucky.
59959, I kinda sensed I almost logged in this dream I had...
