5843, Primeval Spirit - thoughts
Posted by Tjok on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
A few random thoughts re: the Primeval Spirit that I don't think would make Outlander more powerful. First, the description:
l spirit Giving life to the massive wooden totem of the primeval caverns, this spirit-being flickers around its host with an animistic spark. Existing as a phantom, it occupies the same space as the totem it inhabits, animating it with a spiritual spark of life. Tendrils of flame wrap, embrace, and caress the totem, remarkably not harming the wood in the process. The spirit ignites the eyes of its host with glowing embers that shift color with its mood.
Alright. I've seen the spirit bleeding, blinded, poisoned, etc. I believe this being should not be affected by any of these physical maledictions because it exists as a phantom. It might even be more resistant to weapons. Moreover, while altering the Spirit to more accurately reflect its phantom-like state would add a little to the ambience of the Tree, I don't think it would greatly upset the "balance" of raiding Outlander.
Thanks.

I am ALWAYS for revamping an image when the current seems... a little outdated. However, I'm not at all for tweaking things. I guess I'm very antidisestablishmentarianistic when it comes to CF. Once we have the numbers up, the Spirit (as is) will be the hardest inner guardian to defeat. I can only imagine how people feel when they raid us already.. "Is Tjok around? Do you think he's waiting for us?" We have some of the scariests and least known characters in the game, and usually others think three or four times before actually coming to raid. Anyway, I absolutely ADORE Tjok and everything he stands for with Outlanders. Great character, IC and well admired OOC.

Insects...VERY often. NO magical transport or even resting...when your cabal is in a semi maze.
Spores. coupled with no resting or transport.
thornheart. coupled with no resting or transport.
Along with some other REALLY nasty things.
And you think adding an immunity to maladiction and further physical resistance wouldn't upset the balance?
Sure. I'd agree with that. If you got rid of the Insects.

I was thinking out loud. Something seemed jarring and mundane about the Spirit being blinded. So I posted the idea. And while I posted it, I thought of other related things off the top of my head. Unfortunately, I hadn't taken out a pen and paper to list pros and cons of game "balancing".
As for this, though:
>Insects...VERY often.
Odrirg raided a crap load of times that I can remember. I think Odrirg got insected one time in all the raids I defended against :P From Tjok's perspective, that's pretty normal; it doesn't happen very often, at all, but that 1 out of 50 times it does happen, it's pretty darn memorable - because that guy is a goner unless he came with a gang. Obviously, it's pretty memorable for the victims, as well - which is probably why so many people who are on the opposite side from Outlander seem to take for granted that the Spirit will use Insects.
It's a similar but more extreme example of the perspective you mentioned when you deleted Odrirg -- that when you played your ranger it seemed like every snare broke, but when you played against rangers, it seemed like every snare triggered.
Otherwise, thanks for your input.

didn't realize you were just thinking out-loud. As for insects not happening often?
Searching through my logs, I was able to find ONE raid where noone got insected, and that was probably because the spirit was already really hurt from a previous raid attempt.
In the first 8 times Odrirg fought the inner Spirit (logs snippets below), the Spirit insected 12 times. Meaning, on average, someone was going to get insected...and half the time two people were. Of course, this was SOMEWHAT mitigated by the vindicator's guards soaking up the insects a few times. But really. Only 2 positions in the mud can bring guards to raid.
Not sure what you would call "very often". But for me, there being a 95% chance that someone will get insected is fairly often. Especially when most of the time I was raiding either solo or with few other people.
As for me not getting insected often when you were there defending....*chuckle* That's because I could never stay and finish the raid while you were defending. You almost always drove me off before the Spirit had a chance to insect me. And to be honest, I lived in fear that you would learn to wait until I was insected to strike.

I disagree that the level of resistance to abilities/weapons you are talking about wouldn't upset the balance of raiding Outlander.
That said, I wouldn't mind the Spirit having some more ambiance, and that is certainly a possibility in the future. To throw you a bone, we've recently made it so this spirit will not leave a corpse.
However, the Primeval Spirit, indeed any spirit, is going to be semi or completely in a corporeal form. After all, in order to influence material beings, it will have to exist in a way that material beings can affect it. Think of bleeding as the spirit oozing ectoplasm or something, and poison being a toxicity of the spirit. Obviously much of what you are talking about is magic or prayer anyways.

I can live with that - I haven't seen the Spirit fall recently, so I never noticed :P Along those same lines, maybe the Maran Tarabal can die without a corpse, also -- and leaves an empty suit of crumbling armor for extra flair.

Well, the thought actually didn't cross my mind until I was defending a raid today, and noticed Lin-Ha cured the Spirit's blindness. Something about that just seemed weired so I went ahead and posted on the chance it was something not considered.

how about making it a natural creature so bioempathy works with it?

A Spirit really isn't a natural thing.
