58309, Overabundance of paladins?
Posted by Dallevian on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Does anyone else think that there are too many paladins in CF? To me, they should be rare beacons of knightliness, few and far between.
But because they're so versatile and easy to rank and pk with, paladins are the go-to class for all things good-aligned.
There's a couple things I have rattling around in my head about paladins as a class: 1- make them restricted similar to special races (minos/azure) 2- give them an exp penalty 3- stop handing out virtues like candy corn 4- seriously penalize paladins for being wusses or breaking the paladin code 5- further limit the special gear (only 1 defiance, shield of light, and bal'talon) 6- make PCs able to request from a paladin as if it was a mob (har)
I don't know, does anyone else feel like CF has too many paladins and not enough Paladins?

58347, I would like no paladins and no hidden classes, both are very hard to deal with

But without the fear and the occasional win over one of those, CF would be more boring, but also less stressful.

Well, if you start with that assumption, you will probably end up at the conclusion that there are too many paladins.
However, the class was not designed to be a rarity, and they aren't especially abundant by any standard. I don't see any of your suggestions being implemented.

It was explained to me that xp penalties represented how rare
that race or class was desired to be in game, and paladins,
having a 400 xp penalty--the largest--was designed to be
somewhat more rare than the other classes. But, obviously this
wasn't a strict preventative measure, or even followed by
later implementations (such as how minotaurs are limited).
The traditional classes were all 0 xp, with the rest being
more.
Warriors [Standard Class] - 0 extra experience points
Thieves [Standard Class] - 0 extra experience points
Clerics [Standard Class] - 0 extra experience points
Transmuters [Specialized Mage] - 0 extra experience points
Invokers [Specialized Mage] - 0 extra experience points
Necromancers [Specialized Mage] - 0 extra experience points
Rangers [Forest Warrior] - 200 extra experience points
Bards [Musician] - 300 extra experience points
Assassins [Thief/Cleric] - 300 extra experience points
Anti-Paladins [Warrior/Mage] - 300 extra experience points
Paladins [Warrior/Cleric] - 400 extra experience points
But it is a different game now, so, game on.

Bite your tongue. You obviously have not played one. Try a monk/champion and see how deadly you are. Hahaha! Flee is Paladin's weakness.

58313, huh? i've played several

My comment was less about the pk side and more about how it doesn't fit the FANTASY to have a thousand paladins - they should be rare from a story side.

58316, i would be curious too see what is the current percentages of classes.
Posted by Perpetual_Noob on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I don't think Paladins are as numerous as you think.
Would the IMMs do a quick data pull?
Also, I do think the paladin code should be followed more strictly. Things that I don't see much is...
4. Never abandon your friends, allies or your beliefs. Fight with courage, and if you must you will die. Never betray your comrades or cower in fear.
This action should be highlighted/rewarded/lauded more. Because to a player it sucks when you are saving someone who did something stupid and you are forced by the code to protect/attempt to save them. Which usually get the paladin killed. 9. Respect the laws of the land and those who seek to enforce them.
I personally think this one is open to ethos interpretation. OG paladins follow the law to the letter, while NG Paladins see the law as a tool to protect the innocent. It is not a de-militarized zone where evil can run and thumb their noses at the paladin on the boarder of protected zones.
End ramble

58317, Something kind of like what you asked for
Posted by Destuvius on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Currently, 4% of the active characters are Paladins.
There are 7 classes with a smaller %.
There are 7 classes with a larger %.
*Edit to add* There is also 1 class with the same 4% as paladins. I somehow missed that the first go through.
Paladins are the 2nd highest % for empowerment classes, behind shaman.
Alignment is still skewed in favor of Evil, which makes MOAR WRATH! a very viable way to play at the moment (although I would find no fun in it)

58318, Thanks Desty.

So pallys are middle of the road. MOAR WRATH!
Why wouldn't you find it fun? Not a fan of pallys?
*edit to add* I would expect druid and healer to always be below pally and shamans.

Pretty sure Desty is an experimental theorycrafter as opposed to a one dimensional "com wrath" guy.

58319, % of hero though?
Posted by Dallevian on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
that's what i'm talking about. seems like it skews a lot at hero (because they're so versatile, easy to rank)
|
58321, CF doesn't start at hero, 3/4 of the mud at any time is not heroes.
Posted by Anti-Hero on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Stop trying to justify anything by what it is at hero.

58323, Not sure about hero paladins in particular, but...

only 21% of the total characters are between lvl 41 and 51.

58310, I wouldn't call them easy to PK with
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
They are hard to kill and can deal solid damage against evils but actually landing kills without someone else to bash is a supreme exercise in frustration more often than not.

Shield ded is too good at the moment as a result of the shield edges. Rest are ok bug I agree that paladins should be held to strict code adherence. As it stands it is so loose it might as well not exist, and even then paladins break it with no reprisal on a number of occasions.
I was thinking today that I like magner because she acts like a rager. I wish I saw more paladins act like paladins. No, that doesn't mean suicide to me; magner has killed me and I've not got her. But she makes the game better by living up to the standards she is meant to.

I honestly tried to follow the Paladin code as best I could with Zerliae (hard to balance evil and selfless).
It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought, so it shouldn't be that hard for goodies to follow it, too many people wanting to pad their leetz0r PK stats.
