57033, Wand System Idea
Posted by TJHuron on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I had an idea I thought I'd throw out for discussion about the wand system.

Right now wand locations vary in their difficulty and it doesn't sound like that is something the admins are willing to change. Working around this aspect, what if you modified the current wand system so that the more wands you collect over a characters life the less of a chance you will have at drawing a difficult wand position?

And to go one step further what if you get to a point where you've gathered so many wands with a single character that you could then become eligible to set your wand location permanently so it would then become similar to the old system except you would have favorable set locations? This could be done through an edge or something and possibly should be done so the easiest locations could not be available for a set location. People would end up with set locations of medium difficulty.

I could see this working as incentive for characters to live longer and gather wands, even though they may encounter some difficult locations at first, because it will only get easier and eventually leading to the option to set a wand location of moderate difficulty that might suit the character. I also think it might satisfy people on both sides of the fence with regards to the new system versus old system. It possibly could even attract some players back who stopped playing over dislike of the new system, assuming those people exist.

I think that the current system is superior to the previous one and does a pretty good job of addressing player concerns while also addressing our design goals (which are not always to give players whatever they ask for). On that note, I would extend a thank you to everyone who thoughtfully participated in the wand discussions, as the most recent "revamp" was largely driven by player feedback.

Right now I think we're satisfied with the implementation we have and are looking forward to spending the immediate future working on new and different projects.

Thanks for saying that.
57042, a useful addition that shouldn't bee too hard...

would be that after a real life week a 'discussed' location changes to another. This would stop players getting screwed by a location that they know but is just to hard to get with their available skills/spells and allies. The seige encampment for example is rock hard and once you have it you are screwed if you dont have enough edges for barrier attunement.

Just a thought
57048, I think this is a very good idea~

Fewer wand collections might merit getting easier locations, IMO.
57037, Are you saying that as you collect more wands your chances of getting a difficult location should increase?

And only when you begin and have collected few wands do you have mostly easy locations?

Wouldn't that just make the system get progressively harder and cause people more frustration possibly leading to more deletions?

There is a segment of the playerbase that doesn't like the new wand system, for whatever reason, and the purpose of my idea was to offer an incentive to work within the new system. By knowing that things can get better they might be more inclined to keep going instead of saying "#### it, it got another ####ty location, this system sucks I'm deleting and going to find something else to do"

Maybe I overestimate the existence of this segment, but, even still this idea would be nice for anyone as it is another perk that goes along with the growth and longevity of their character. Plus, it makes sense in a realistic sort of way. A wise and experienced Mage is likely going to have learned a few things over the years about acquiring these magical artifacts and would have an easier time doing so just by knowledge alone than a fledgling Mage.

That using a wand has both pros and cons that are both significant. Otherwise using a wand all the time starts to be a good thing. I like that mages don't have barrier for every fight.

Another thing i wouldn't mind seeing is that the underdog on against 4 enemies on his own gets a temporary second location that's not in the hard category.

How bout after getting a specific wand you can tell your guildmaster to never give you that spot again? Maybe you get 2 of those to use.

Sure, without knowing anything about coding one would think this would be easier to implement. It also adds the same kind of benefits but at a softened level.

Although to do this wouldn't you probably have to draw the location before you could eliminate it as a possible future location?

Overall it'd be cool to hear administrations opinions on this. Maybe we waste our time discussing it as they may think the system is perfect currently. Who knows?
