56837, The Realm of War - Tower Defense in CF - Is this possible?
Posted by Moligant on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
A pulsing red portal floats in the middle of the Market Square of Galadon.
A town crier informs the populace that the same portal can be found in all the protected cities. Nobody knows where they came from or what is on the other side.
Brave adventuters sally forth to find on the other side of the portal a realm...of WAR! Treasures locked behind various gates await the few remaining survivors of the Games....
IDEA: (you knew this was coming right)
Create an area (not a large area) that is accessed every now and again by portals that open up in the cities. Anyone can enter the portals at any rank. There is no telling who or what will be waiting on the other side.
This area would not be an arena. Death is real. You lose con. That said, there would be a timer. As the timer counts down waves of enemies would be released from beyond the gates where the treasures lie. In addition you may have to worry about the other players who may want to kill you.
1st Wave enemies would be fairly easy allowing players to gain special jewels that can be used to 'activate' or otherwise utilize the actual defensive things throughout the area.
Each wave would be harder and drop more jewels. Whoever is left standing at the end of this (assuming all waves are defeated within the time limit) can grab special 'realm of war' items (rot-death gear, gold, etc.) from the gate that matches their range. I'm thinking 4 Gates (11-20), (21-30), (31-40), (41-51). You wouldn't be able to pass through a gate that isn't the gate for your range.
WHY?
Just a fun way I think to incentivize people getting in one place and fighting it out every now and again. You can open this up the same way you do bonus learning/experience. Create the area and then when you see enough people around but nobody near each other you just flip the switch and bada bing bada boom, instant mini-quest.
Since nobody would know exactly who is on the other side, there will always be that person who takes the risk of dying on the chance they wont have anyone on the other side who can hurt them besides the NPCs :)
I'm sure this would be hard to code and stuff do im judt throwing it out there as a goofball idea that could be pretty fun if someone took the time. Maybe have this area be near Akresius shrine or something but as mentioned only accessible via portal.
Just a thought!

56884, I've been thinking about this for a few days

And I really think that there is some value to this idea. I think that it has some potential to be done in some variation that is fairly low investment from Team Code and despite the fact I have a few other projects in the works right now, this one may get added if I can get the blessings of said Team Code based on my pitch.

56842, i'd like to see more zelda-like quests in areas

small puzzles centered around 'use'-ing things or puttings things in other objects

Also very code contingent.
It needs to be understood that there is a pretty time consuming process to go from "scripted idea on paper" to "in game finished product".
Let's say for instance that someone puts something like this into their area. Would people be happier with that in game fun than(for instance) a new race or class? New edges? A better economy?
This is pretty much what the staff have to grapple with on a constant basis. Trying to maximize the ROI for players given the time investment. You also have to pitch the idea to someone who can code, and beg them to invest X hours of their time, if you cannot code.

56852, OP wrote down a great new idea

New race/class/edge doesn't really improve a lot, it's still the same underlying mechanics pretty much. New ideas that introduce new gameplay are a breath of fresh air and can revitalize the mud. These are the things that I would be focusing on if I was on staff.
Some areas (*cough* Hell) are so well-written and contain enough items that affect gameplay in novel ways that they can serve as a good example of what I mentioned.
TLDR; focus on new gameplay mechanics, overhaul cabalwars if possible

I think this could be done more by an area writer than requiring a lot of heavy coding, if you were willing to accept some changes. (No, I'm not volunteering to do it).
An area that releases ever increasing difficulty sets of mobs for two level ranges (20-35, 36-51). This puts the work on the area writer to write two areas for both ranges, and a bunch of mobs that increase in difficulty. The coder would still have to work on something to release it, which may not be easy, but at least it is putting the work where someone could try by hero imming (also assuming the final idea is approved).
This would axe jewels and powered defenses, though you could potentially try to convince a coder to put some minor defenses in that would help with the weaker mobs but not do much against the tougher ones.
All in all, why not try to become a hero imm and do it yourself instead of spending time typing up so many random ideas?

1. I don't know a thing about coding.
2. I was a heroimm once. They wanted at the time a 100 room area. I heroimmed so I could write 'the Gapverdi Inn' which really I just wanted to rewrite the Copeham...a area the size of about what...30 rooms? I gave up after having written I think the entire 100 rooms due to school and just plain wasn't feeling what you had to go through just to make a minor (to me ) change.

Off the cuff, I'd say this definitely sounds like a lot of work. That in and of itself isn't a deal-breaker, but it's also not something that gets me excited enough about to work on. So having said that, while I have no immediate objections to something like this, it lands toward the bottom of my list of things to worry about.
That's my personal two cents. I believe someone constructively criticized us recently for not participating in forum discussion and/or responding to player submitted ideas, so instead of ignoring this idea for the reason above, I'm offering my honest opinion even though I personally do not intend to work on this or otherwise champion the idea. Nonetheless, thanks for making the effort and doing so on this venue.
