56226, My Question went un-answered - Mark
Posted by Mystery Ranger... on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
The whole reason for my post was to determine if I was going to get hit with the slay stick for quitting out of being marked.
I generally play in blocks of 2-4 hrs. And I quit out just about every hour (instead of idling, because idling=die horribly). The other day was the first time I'd had someone threaten to pray about me quitting, because he had marked me.
My Question: If dude marks me, and I quit 30-45 mins later, are you going to slay me? Do I need to idle even though I don't particularly care to?
Daev clarified that it is in fact against the rules to quit out to clear being marked - ok, I accept that.
Now: What is the threshold? And how will I be judged given the facts above? Should I be worried about coming back to a slay for quitting out every hr/walk dog/returning?
You don't want me to use an active name to post on these forums again - got it, won't happen.
May I please have some sort of "This is what we expect of you in this particular circumstance" explanation? I'm trying to play by your rules. Please clarify them for me.
Thank you.
Edit: Please, delete the entire thread below - I really only want clarification from IMM's, and I should've avoided the peanut gallery discussion but I didn't.

Regarding both threads:
Yes, your behavior has been clearly against the rules, and has been for at least 15 years. Instead of trying to weasel out exactly how many minutes of cheese will get you slain and purged, knock off the behavior.
Most of our rules can be boiled down to "don't use OOC mechanisms to achieve an IC effect".

There is no threshold or hard number. Like many of our rules, is it the job of the Immortals to use their best discretion to determine when behavior becomes abusive.
Here is what we expect: You never quit because you are marked.
If the staff feels that a character has developed a pattern of quitting under questionable circumstances then you might end up having to explain yourself, or worse.
Use your best judgement and ask yourself honestly, "Am I quitting because I need to, or do I not really need to quit but doing so would be to my advantage somehow" and behave accordingly.
Likewise, if you are quitting every 60 minutes or so to walk the dog or whatever else, over time that should distinguish itself from a pattern of quitting to lose a mark, avoid a PK, avoid a bad PK range, avoid a tracking NPC, etc.
Honestly, I think this is pretty simple stuff and now that we've clarified (to you) that quitting to avoid a mark is in fact against the rules, your problem is more that you simply don't like the rule than it is you lack the information necessary to follow it.

56231, You've already explained you are quitting to lose the mark

If the imms think the same, expect a slay; it's clearly subjective and if they defined it you've made it clear you'll quit as early as you can, despite the overriding rule that says not to quit for ooc advantage.
The fact you are still trying to find a way to quit out of being marked reflects badly on you, not the "peanut gallery".
If there's a pattern of you quitting earlier than usual after fighting assassins you'll eventually have issues. If not you won't. They are unlikely to punish a first questionable occasion but bear in mind the assassin has probably already prayed if you've done it several times.

I've been warned in the past by IMMs for quitting while marked and coming back within say 10 mins. This wasn't an attempt at the time by me to clear the mark, more like go and have a smoke, but I still agree that it was bad form and should be penalized.
Mark of the prey should have no time limits, it's fine as it is. It should go away if the assassin dies.
I understand the IMMs not giving you an exact time duration where quitting and coming back is considered OK re: mark as interpretations and situation may vary. If I was an IMM, I'd have a minimum of 1 hour there.
