"While a mountaineer finds himself less comfortable in areas of warmth or dense foliage, his enemies shudder to face him on his own turf."
Warmth+dense foliage - Forest?
What terrain hampers mountaineers?

It's warmth OR dense foliage (that OR matters). Desert is especially problematic. I would imagine that forest would be as well.

Desert maybe, but dense foliage is almost certainly jungle/marsh. I don't recall having any problems in forest.
Usually this kind of thing ends up being trouble with creeping or camo.
