55788, Leader positions
Posted by TJHuron on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I haven't been playing a serious character since Ishuntal, but, I've been bumping around enough to see that Crraya is no longer Commander. I've no idea how this went down, but, I had previously had a thought about leaders that I was going to wait to share until she was done so she didn't think she was the source of this topic as she seems to catch flack about her availability. This is not aimed at her, I rather like her character. It's just an independent idea.
Also, maybe this is how it went down with Crraya, I don't know.
It seems that sometimes after awhile the burden of leadership burns some people out on their character. Long lived leaders sometimes become a bit stale to play to the point where the player either has to delete or step down so as not to be a dead beat leader for their cabal. Stepping down is hard for a character because it means a reduction in power, which leaves deletion.
Has it ever been discussed to let certain tenured leader characters step down and retain the powers of their position? Meaning they keep getting leader con, keep their leader weapon and possibly retain the leader powers or bumps (with maybe the Emperor as the exception) but no longer have cabal authority or the ability to induct. Also, uninduction could only be done by an imm.
Obviously, if something like this were allowed it should only be available to leader characters who've earned it and put in their time. Maybe you could hard set rules of eligibility (like at least 200 hours as leader) or make it a judgment call for the imms on a case by case basis. Crraya might be a good example of a character who could be eligible for this. From what I've seen she was a good leader and she had to have put in several hundred hours as commander. I certainly couldn't blame her if the character got a little stale after nearly a year and it caused her play times to fall off.
Something like this would allow people who've earned it keep their character and power level while being able to move on at the same time. It also helps circulate leader positions to other deserving characters.
Thoughts?

Bad idea. There are niches of people out there who end up in the same cabals more often than rolling against each other. What's to prevent people from saying okay I've been leader long enough to keep a leadership ability and roll with leader con loss, Whose next?

I don't agree with the idea of giving leader powers to non-leaders, , especially leaders who per this idea have shown themselves to be a bit dead beat. Why reward failure?
That said I prefer the idea of having more clear-cut and effective means for deposing leaders in game for those cabals that don't necessarily have a mechanism for ridding themselves of deadbeats.
Empire obviously can just stage a coup and due to their nature of induction doesn't suffer as much from absentee leaders.
However for other cabals I think either a vote system, or some sort of 'back-up' leade rwho takes over automatically if a certain period of time has gone by without the main leader showing up or anything else that could be implemented easily to deal with leaders who barely show up.

55789, I'd support this

150 hours max as leader and you become an elder and keep the power boost, apart from emperor where you get to keep one of the other sect's leader powers.
Gives more people a shot at leading. And only those that lead and also have longevity would get extra benefit.
Crayya however just has laptop issues, according to her post. Having said that, when your hours drop off, it can be frustrating when all you can do is admin when you eventually get on.

55790, That's an interesting idea

I never thought about capping the time one spent at leader. I think that could actually work well.

55791, Terrible idea

If a player becomes a deadbeat leader or even a bad leader there are plenty of opportunities for that to change. The IMMs could intervene or (better) the cabal players under him should change the situation.
There is no reason for CF to adopt something as mechanistic as capping leader time so that "everyone gets a fair chance". This is garbage. Play the game and let leaders lead in any way they see fit. Use in-game measures to bring them down if needed, this is an excellent source of strife and potential RP.

My original post is not directed at terrible leaders. It's directed towards good leaders who've led for a long time and have gotten sick of the administration grind.
Hopefully terrible leaders don't last long enough in their position to be considered part of this conversation.
As to capping leadership time I said I think it could work. I can see how some people would be resistant to it but I also think there are a lot who would be more than happy to serve their time and then pass along the torch all the while retaining all the powers they've earned.

55801, Was thinking about insects

I think I'd make them only 75 percent effective for elders. So with enough attempts you can breach them, if you survive long enough to make the attempts. Still a significant advantage but not completely op given that someone else is getting full insects as a result of them moving to elder status.
