54450, Vanish echo improvement request
Posted by Calion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
While reading a bunch of logs recently I was reminded of the lackluster echo on vanish:
X throws down a small globe. X is gone!
You (imms) have done a good job of improving various echoes over the years making them more immersive, and I don't know how vanish has been overlooked. I remember years and years ago there was a contest (by Valg?) to improve some echoes and I´m pretty sure I then suggested something along these lines for vanish:
-room echo:
Assassin throws down a small globe, which explodes into a thick cloud of smoke. When the smoke clears, Assassin is gone!
-room fail echo:
Assassin throws down a small globe, which cracks producing but a small wisp of smoke.
-self echo:
You throw down a small globe, using the billowing smoke for cover to make your escape.
(maybe "escape" isn't best here, as vanish isn't always used in such a manner, but I can't think of anything better just now)
-self fail echo:
You throw down a small smoke-filled globe, but it doesn't explode properly and the smoke billows away.
So, my humble request for the imms is to bring the vanish echo up to date. Of course, feel free to use the suggestions above, or any variant thereof in game. Thanks!

I thought an echo would be a quick/easy thing to fix.
I probably should've posted this on the bug board on the basis of that the current echo makes no sense (assassin throws a globe of some kind somewhere and then just disappears - huh?), because Gameplay posts quickly get buried under new ones.
As an afterthought, IIRC there's a 'smoke' affect in game in some rooms (I forget what it actually does), you could add an edge (acrid smoke, or some such) that leaves a 'smoke affect' into the room for a couple of ticks (besides affecting anyone there at the moment of vanishing).
Oh well, while somewhat annoying it's no biggie, I'm probably in the minority to care about these little things anyway.
