54319, Unsuccessful Casting Echos
Posted by Bemused on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Was there a reason casting echos were added for when the spell was not actually cast? I gets kinda spammy when groupmates or random people are actually spamming stuff unsuccessfully.

ICly, they're uttering words, which have the same reach as Say.
OOC, it lets you know they're attempting to cast spells, and (either directly or through experience) what spell they're attempting.
I don't really see this as a problem. We're talking about one spell per round (at most), visible to one room of people.

Also, on the plus side, when sneaky elf invoker attempts to cast area spell, he gives himself away if he fails and you can do something about it.

It isn't just when they actually cast the spell. Let's say someone's spamming c 'neuro' in anticipation of someone entering the room. The spam, far more than one per round, is visible to everyone in the room even though there is no mana being consumed, etc.
Spamming for someone to enter the room is a valid tactic that's basically not going anywhere. This just makes it annoying to be in the same room as the would-be caster.

54330, This. It isn't a round, its the amount of time it takes for them to hit up and enter again. n/t

In some cases, you can get the echo a bunch of times in pretty quick succession without casting the spell.
I think Zulg changed it to fix some case where you didn't see the words at all and ended up with this as fallout.

54335, Non class spells.

I don't know if you guys know or not. I thought I bug boarded a while back, but if say a bard for some reason typos or something and does "c sleep" they utter the words grzzs too. So non class can apparently utter words to spells they don't know from this feature huehue.

If they're the same class as you and the make typos you can see what spell the game thinks they tried to cast. So you can see antipaladins trying to cast ironskin and necros trying to cast animate weapon for instance.

By "unsuccessful" I actually mean a directed spell on someone who is not in the room. Thus there is no lag, no mana consumed. Sleep is a pretty common one to see. For example: Mr Necro sitting at large crossroads spamming sleep on a PC waiting for him to enter the room. Every single spam is echoéd to everyone in the room while the necro waits for the PC to enter the room, however the necro himself cannot see the echo so is completely unaware that OTHER people can see what he is trying to do. And oblivious to the fact that he is spamming other peoples screens.
