50627, Player Poll and Discussion, Inn bans
Posted by Gaplemo on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
There has been a lot of talk lately (and always) about the ability for heralds to have a safe zone to hold and hoarde armor with little to no risk.
Since the inn is *somewhat* of a RP area, and could be argued that newbies hang out there, you can't really do away with the inn guard, because that would make the toss skill useless. You can't do away with the bouncers, they protect the newbies and roleplayers to a Degree, but not completely.
Here is my proposal, and I would like some input.
Do away with the permabans that you get at the eternal star when you cause too much trouble there. You could still toss a player, and they would still have a timer on when they were back allowed in based on time or adrenaline or whatever, but nobody should EVER be banned permanently.
You're going to punish people for going after gear lockers and taking risks? There is already the risk of bouncers bashing you down and your victim raping you, theres the risk of being tossed for 10-15 minutes, but permanent? Why play anything but ragers, all the real good limited items are on heralds that won't die for 350-600 hours and probably not leave the inn but for 100 hours total of that whole time, the rest of the time they are completely and utterly safe.
Would love to hear the players, AND staffs opinions on this. I've always thought the eternal star was a cool place, but the way things are going now if you even think about killing one an imm is going to slap that ban on you, and you can never even attempt again. Making their ability to hold everything nice in the game with no risk even easier.
Just an idea that I think could improve the eternal star without breaking it.

1) I don't think anyone in Herald is actively hoarding gear and hiding out in the Inn to avoid losing gear. Sure, they probably don't want to just lie down, roll over, and die for you - just like anyone else in the game.
2) If you get banned, you can always approach a Herald IMM about getting your permissions back. That doesn't mean you'll just automatically get them back (or get them back easily), but it's an avenue you can pursue.
3) I believe that anyone complaining about Heralds and bans and gear, etc should actually try playing one. Often, it's a completely different animal once you see things from the other side.

50651, Herald Gear Lockers

A majority of Heralds are not gear lockers. Yet it would be naïve to say that there weren't a spate of Herald thieves recently who WERE gear lockers. I have no problem with trying to PK them to get those shinies and making the Inn a less-safe place.
I am not a mover-and-shaker of any cabals' politics, so this is just an opinion.

50636, I agree to an extent

I do think something needs to be done. Especially because if there is more than one herald, even if you can perma lag out your victim they can still get a toss on you.
Ironically this hurts goodies the most IMO. Most of the high end limited gear that the 6-10 hero heralds are sitting on is either anti-evil + goodies can't get away with jumping heralds.
This means that the high end gear which could be a game changer in cabal wars is taken out of play for 100+ hours at a time.
I don't know what the solution is, because the game isn't all PK, but I do think heralds should be a bit more pk-able. It's beyond hard to nail one down, especially if they know you're gunning for you and they know to sit in the Inn when you're on. I would be okay if the Inn guard was a bit easier to kill or something similar.

Thank you, Mr. Horse.

50633, Sounds unnecessary.

You make it sound as if Heralds don't leave the Inn, or that they don't ever end up in PK. Many of them are thieves and assassins, but it isn't impossible to catch either of them. It's just slightly tougher, but upside is they are easy kills. Go talk to some. A number of them (not all of them) can barely type a sentence in 5 minutes seems like. I'm sure they can be and are PKd.
Herald title doesn't mean they are exempt from being killed or fulled.

50635, I disagree

You get 8 idiots in herald, sure. But then you get a guy like Charlee, who literally is overweight from carrying so many limited items (you ever see a peek of that guys inventory?) and they NEVER die, and they hold that armor for hundreds of hours. And no, some of them literally spend 85% of their characters life at the inn, you won't catch them slipping.
I'd bet you anything I could roll up a city ties/arcane thief herald, age die him, and never, ever EVER die to pk. Not once ever if I didn't want to. Toss triggers and inn safety ftw I guess, maybe I'll do it and just start hoarding the #### out of everything I can steal and hold to prove a point.
edited to add, I seriously, seriously doubt even half the heralds playing right now are newbies. More than half of them are serious vets at least. CF doesn't even have that many newbies, let alone have them all together in the same cabal.

50637, Depends who it is gear lockering.
Posted by lasentia on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I played two gear locker type characters, one a herald, one in nexus. Nexus was just because I didn't die, while herald I just got it from going and doing things, and nobody ever really tried to kill me all that often.
My only herald was around with Charlee, and he was always decked out in high end gear. That did mean though, that enemies of people don't have that super gear. If you choose to look at it that way I'd rather a herald have stoneform than the emperor or chancellor, if I'm a Maran.
My bigger problem is the people who roll thieves, just to steal things, but have no truly discernable RP other than I'm a thief so I steal things to gear locker them. Problem is, you kill those guys once, they just spend their time annoying you endlessly stealing from you if you ever go near eastern, cities or cabals. You're not going to really con kill characters like that, so you end up just letting them go and accepting them as the annoyance they are. Or you play a rager, who generally doesn't carry much in inventory except food and water.
With steal, I always found it hard to believe you could do something like steal a thunderlance from someone anyway. A potion or some coins? sure, It's small, might not be noticed. A breastplate that weighs 30 pounds though? Sort of ridiculous that some svirf is going to take it from you without being noticed.
Then again, I've hated thieves since I started playing CF, and I doubt that will ever change. Especially uncaballed ones. So that probably colors my vision unfairly.
The only thing about those characters is people get bored, because they are so afraid of dying and losing those things that they do nothing, and eventually delete once they've explored where they want to. I imagine if you played one, you'd get bored. You can only type eq freeze so many times before you stop caring.

50630, With this idea, I think you would have to buff the bouncers a bit.

Give them a bit more than just bash. Maybe make some of the guards stronger like Olin. Or the one at the tale-telling fire.
