50211, Daev. Can you confirm the location of the item that ate Keilans HP?
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
As if its the item I think it is (I've used it safely, but if its the item I think it is.. well I can guess why it hasn't hurt me.) shouldn't there be an echo.. or something to indicate the harm its causing your char? If its not that particular crystalline item. What item was it? As I got to look at his inventory.. and honestly I saw no clues aside from that one item.

I tend to play explore characters, so If I paint myself in a corner like this I'm not upset.

But when I see someone like Keilan taken down by code designed to curb OOC info sharing (I assume, if its even the item I think it is), by an IC action. Well that really kind of breaks the CF fun stick for that player.

It also makes me not want to introduce silent to new players. I'm more inclined to tell them it'll probably #### up their char and ruin their efforts. (And I'd argue that sort of thing directly causes a rise in OOC sharing. Since everyone will want to know what not to touch, instead of finding out themselves.)

If anyone wants to use this thread as a chance to point fingers, or cry about whatever in where-ever place. I don't care and will not respond.

This is exclusively a funstick question from what I'd consider a new players POV.

Okay, with this additional detail I know what item it is -- it isn't what I was originally thinking and I forgot the item did that.

I'm sure this won't be a popular answer but I'm not worried about "new player funstick" because a new player is never going to find that item. Actually I don't think the clue that tells you where to find it and what's dangerous about it is available at this point so there's really no legit way to find it at all.
50250, If you can't find it, how was it floating around?
Posted by N b M on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
And how did it nuke a newer player (he is newer, right? Dunno about that one way or the other)... If you can't find it, that is.
50251, RE: If you can't find it, how was it floating around?
Posted by Daevryn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Someone who found it back when the clue was available (or more likely, brute forced the exploration back when that was possible) would have to tell you how to get it.
50252, Ah, I read that as not being available at all...

Instead of "The way to find it isn't in game anymore"

Bleh.
50260, I wouldn't say newer, been around for quite a few years...
Posted by Onewingedangel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
But even still, never been to ST, still haven't, it was just given to me. Guess he forced it, without the clue or warning, and there I was, 155 hp at level 46. Oh well. It is kind of a ####ty way to come back after a year break, though.

People are being punished, because you removed the clue??

To an item I discovered because you were using as Cabdru? And others have reminded me of IC?

Bleharg. Perhaps you should remove the item then. Since you are apparently the only one allowed to have characters to use it.
50254, That is sort of lame, why wouldn't you just take it out? You are purposefully punishing players with your area?
Posted by Lhydia on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
That is like the panel in Ysigrath that didn't have a desc...if you got jaded one day and said instead of removing the panel all together anyone who opens it eats a level 60 power word kill instead. Only people who talked to you initially even knew it was there.

>People are being punished, because you removed the clue??

People punished themselves by skipping the step that warned them of the conditions in which the item is dangerous.
50256, The warning you've removed,
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Am I following this correctly?

So I learn the location of an item you were using, and ICly discovered its location. But I shouldn't be annoyed that you removed the clues and haven't added an echo accordingly, because at some point the cat got out of the bag by someone who brute forced it?

I can't wrap my head around that.

I do suspect the scenario that caused it looking at my ancient notes. Would it be that hard to readd the hint in the journals or notes or whatever? And if thats too much work, just close that container, who knows who else who learned this icly and will be burned in the future.

Thanks for replying btw.
50257, They brute forced it.
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Which is a path that would have skipped the warning even if it was there if I've understood this correctly. I agree that warning being there in some form would be nice if the item is practically obtainable.

I'm not sure I've ever had that item, but that isn't really important.

It's in a kind of odd state at the moment -- a consequence of opening the area for the holidays despite some of my reworks of things being half done and forgetting to close it. I'll do something about it.

I hope your solution isn't to close the ST again. It's a neat place, and over my CF career I've barely scratched the surface and was hoping to do more.

By the way, was this guy's stat loss permanent? Or would a death have reset it? It sounds like it was permanent but I thought I'd ask because if it was permanent and considering the situation, wouldn't it have just been easier to fix his stat loss and avoid bad feelings all over?

I've never played invoker, much less Scion invoker, but I imagine the time input is considerable to do it right. Plus the recent RC win! And to have all that wiped out because he unwittingly used an item someone gave him. Come to think of it, had that item been purposely given to him, that would have been some pretty gnarly evil Scion sabotage, but, it seems like all this was pretty innocent.
50219, That item was it.
Posted by Onewingedangel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It was given to me IC and he left me trying to figure out how to use it for the longest time. I have never been to ST, this was the first ever item I have ever had from there. I couldn't figure it out, so he told me like, a week later. After that, I saw small hp drops from using it, but at the time I thought it was a despoil bug. Until the day I lost like, 250-300 in one log off. Yeah, nothing to hint at HP loss. Not even the slightest clue, sort of like secret doors that have no clues whatsoever on how to open them. Looking back, it sort of makes sense it's that item. I was in the under dark and used it as my own type of scan, for cave fishers. When I was done, lost all my hp on log off.
50220, That item is not from silent tower
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Honestly dude this is pretty much on you. When you noticed small HP drops that should have been your red flag to stop and ask what has changed recently and stopped using whatever you got.

A despoil bug doesn't make sense for a couple of reasons.
1.) you would have been experiencing it most of your cabaled life(since you indicated it was a steady pattern)
2.) other scions would have been experiencing it and likely would have been vocal
3.) the imms publicly posted that they couldn't really update code for a while (which means skill mechanics were not in flux, and if it had been around a while see #2)

Seriously you experienced a failure to determine root cause of your issues. While there maybe should have been echos to help point out what was at play you clearly still noticed something was up before you were totally crippled and didn't take action to protect yourself beyond an OOC cry for help.

Given the nature of some senior IMMs I don't doubt that if you had approached them in an IC manner they may have offered to remedy the crippling through RP.
50221, Wrong, no and nope.
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
1.The item I refer to is from silent. Trust me.

2.He did seek IC help as far as I've been told.

3. No reason to be snippy about things for which you lack conext.
50222, Source of item is irrevelant
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
He noticed a trend, he didn't act to preserve himself, he reaped the consequences.
50223, Then why are you commenting?
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I can't tell if you think you are being clever, or honestly think this is constructive to the conversation.

But that's not what my question is about, nor do I care if you have some random opinion about some subtext vaguely linked to the subject at hand.

Did that item cause the issue? If so why are there no echoes? Thats the topic.
50230, Hold the ####ing Phone.
Posted by Onewingedangel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You're sitting here pointing fingers at me without the full context of the story? Really?

1)It had a steady pattern, the first two times I noticed it, I had logged off despoiled. I quit logging off despoiled, it didn't happen again till my major hp drop.

2)Even though I met most of them, most of the time I was on alone.

Everything pointed to bug. No echoes, only happened on log off. If you had no clue an item like that existed, and it just happened that you were despoiled before logging off the first few times it happened, wouldn't you think maybe, despoil might just be bugged? Not to mention the fact that it only happened at log off? How many other items do that, I mean really? I've never experienced that or even heard of it before. So yeah, #### you to.
50218, I think it sucks there's no echo. Poor guy lost a high level invoker to it.

Since when are new players concerned about silent tower, seeing as how you mention that area?

See the guys death thread, I don't know how he got it. But he had an item from silent. Probably given knowing its nature.
