49554, Templar's defense - "Unblockable, well placed strike" ?
Posted by crsweeney on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've typoed this in game and reading through the forum posts on Templar's Defense I think I understand why it happened. However there are currently two help files of the same name for this skill. The help files show different syntax for the command. I'm thinking when the new helpfile with expanded information was written the old one was not removed.
The helpfile duplication however is not the reason for this post. In addition to the main help file which is duplicated, there are individual help files for low/mid/high. I understand the help files are intentionally slightly vague, however both low and high strikes are described as "unblockable". Is it intended that this would mean, cannot be blocked using a shield? However can be parried, dodged, evaded, spun away with a staff/spear etc.? It appears every other form of defense can counter these attacks, in my experiments versus mobs at the least. If this is flavor text only, it seems odd that the mid strikes do not list this as a factor? When you decide to keep things intentionally vague, putting in inaccurate specifics seems overly confusing.

I'm not sure how dirt kick correlates to this skill? Templar's defense can be negated using defensie skills like parry, dodge, spin, etc. I believe only evade would apply in this category of skills and the description for dirt kick doesnt state that it is unblockable?
Was your point that if Templar's defense was as easy to land as dirt kick is, it would be excessively powerful?
If that is the perspective, I disagree, however regardless it shouldn't be described as "unblockable" in the help file if it is not.

49599, You missed the point or you don't consider dirt kick unblockable.

If I could block templars defense hiltsmash with something other than the shield eyes edge I'd be ecstatic and in a far better position to fight the paladin in a number of ways on more equal ground, it's already twice as powerful and half as dangerous as dirt kick to use. As it is now, I can block neither dirt kick (exception being earthshield which is niche) nor hiltsmash.
You can use Parry Anything to block templars hiltsmash, that's not the same as using Parry to block it, nor is it reliable.
You can evade Templars Hiltsmash.
That's pretty much it, for all intents and purposes, it and dirt kick are unblockable.
If you don't like the terminology and disagree as to what constitutes unblockable, tough ####, CF has innumerable little quirks and oddities as to what is and isn't possible from a balance perspective that should be the reverse, a version of gates not being a standard mechanic for AC across all characters for instance would be consistent and logical but pretty much people still slice through platemail like butter without the relevant legacy.

Nope.
It might be blockable if you already botched your skill check and it failed, that I can't remember either way.

49605, Pretty sure this is right.

Reason I say this, is when I had my first 2 hander, I spent some time testing out templar's (love the skill btw, wish there was SOMETHING that worked on unarmed guys though....), and I remember being suprised at getting messages like:
Your super fancy fencing powa misses Cabdru. Cabdru parries your super fancy fencing powa.

49608, My recollection is the same

Hiltsmash was perhaps the only one I didn't think got parried at times. Maybe the low shot to the back of the legs too?
Could be wrong but that's my vague recollection.
