4702, A semi-flame regarding barter.
Posted by Cerunnir on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Oh! Look at this. A shining plate from tiamat. Shopkeeper tells you: 'Yeh, hand it to me and you get this nice potion worth 100 copper.'

The current barter seriously hamper outlander. They are dependant on barter. It WOULD make sense that the shopkeeper atleast gave you some worth back. Look at this real life:

You walk into a store where they sell clothes. Gives the key to your porche to the shopkeeper and ask him what you get in return. He offer you a pair of pants and you accept.

If you *choose* to offer a porche for a pair of pants, that's your choice. The shopkeeper would be an idiot not to accept, am I wrong?

It's incumbant upon you to find something of less value to offer.

Is it less convienient that way? Why sure. That's why civilizations adopted the use of currency. It's more efficient, convienient, and people are more sure to offer no more than what they receive, value wise.

But the Outlanders are opposed to the institutions of civilization, even if that means things are less convienient.

All the same, I never cease to be impressed by how resourceful successful Outlanders have been, both in terms of bartering and aquiring what they need through things they find.

I guess his point is that in real life, you could offer the porsche for several pairs of pants, while in Thera this isn't possible.
4716, Yes.

Or on fact everything in the shop.

What I would like to see it atleast some value back. If you barter for a flying potion, with something worth 5 gold. Maybe you could atleast get 10 potions back, which would not be worth more than around 2 gold total.

This has been hashed, and rehashed, and rehashed *AGAIN*. People have complained you can only barter one item for one other item, and the Imms have said that's how it is. *DEAL WITH IT*
4718, No.

I'm not saying yes or no to whether barter should work this way or that, but your point is wrong. Indeed, Zulgh has mentioned on another board in a current thread that some changes are made because enough of the playerbase comments on negatively (read: whines) a particular facet of the game.

There's nothing wrong with people repeating a problem they see in the game, especially if it is a new person complaining about it, because that means the issue is agreed upon by many and not merely the whipping boy of one.

Of course, that comes with the caveat that there shouldn't be much attendant rudeness in the request for change. And here, there wasn't. So I think you should back off this time and let him and the others express their upsetness at the system in this regard. Maybe it will get changed to some extent. Some compromise seems possible, providing say three or five potions for that porsche (and could we please all properly spell that fine german driving machine? :P) rather than just one, but not so many as ten or what have you.

Yup, and this would be one of those.

While it is both annoying, and usually doesn't increase the priority in which it will get fixed, your point is valid.

This is one of those annoying problems (like dual-wield) that the coding solution is neither short, nor easy, and we haven't really looked at it from a balance issue (Do we want to allow Tiamat's plate for 10,000 pies?). It's on my list to investigate. Will it ever get changed? Probably. When? When I have the time.

Now that's what I'm talking about.

Pretty much the perfect thread. :)

Thanks, Pete.

Well, as it has been mentioned in this thread, that subject has been already discussed. Presently, the reality is you can only barter one item for another - so if you offer a high value item for a low value item that is a choice you're making, and there's nothing unrealistic about the fact that the shopkeeper accepts the offer.
