Just curious.

From what I see, most melee classes tend to build their gearset around damage roll stats (along with other gear that's +str/+dex and maybe some +hp if you're lucky). Every once in a while I see someone running around with a pair of sapphire bracelets, but otherwise most are happy enough to get whatever collateral benefits come from from the +dam gear in terms of anything being +hit.

What do you usually target for your hit roll? Do you care about it or actively try to get gear that is +hit?...and what's about average for hit roll at hero ranks?

At what point, or with which builds (or skills?), do you start to see a real difference when you stack the +hit gear?

All I know is that when I roll with a low hit roll my aim and precise aim skills don't improve much and I'm sure they do something.

Aim and precise aim are used to get around AC and to get around "armor deflection" (ie. Mr. T's gold necklace deflects your slash!).

EDIT: Therefore, you only get better at it when fighting mobs/players with armor. The more armor your target is wearing the better.

There was a push a while back by some immortal to make hit roll and AC mean more. I have no idea what all went into that. The rebalancing of AC by armor type, armor weights, armor materials, etc. that happened a while back was part of that iirc.

I know for sure that hit rolls is your problem when you "miss" an attack. That is, they don't parry, dodge, or otherwise deflect and you see a "miss."

As to what else it does, I don't know. I would hope specific skills would clue you in when/if hit roll is a prime factor, but other than that I'd bet it's not hugely important in and of itself.

I still wonder if it affects more than just armor deflection. The way aim is phrased, it sounds like it might affect other defenses like dodge, parry, shield block.

I would love to get imm confirmation on that though.

Here, I'll show you.


So, here is the truth about aim and its associated skills. First and foremost they increase your hit roll equivalent to the % in the skill. So at 100% you will have +100 hit roll. This only takes affect if you eat 12 berry pies, slay 3 goblins in a row, and run around the outskirts of Galadon 3 times clockwise, 2 times counter-clockwise.

Seriously though, aim is best used by warriors with wands. It's part of the wand warrior initiative. You can zap up to 4 rooms away with a high enough aim score. Also, be aware that aim is a magical skill so should not be used by battleragers.

However, I think they're pretty stupid.

It depends on your class, and further depends on how you 'specialize' that class. Dagger specs require more hitroll than most other warriors in my experience. Assassins profit from a little more hit roll as well as far as I can tell (Kotegaeshi, Kansetsuwaza and Owaza in particular seem like they love it when your hitroll is higher). It sort of seems to me that Dex abilities kind of like +hit. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass.

Otherwise? If hit roll is so inconsequential, why was every affect which gave +hit nerfed to half? I'm not saying it will make you an unstoppable powerhouse if you roll around with 40 hit, 30 dam and average 28 weapons... But you certainly won't be hurting on account of having that 20 or so more hitroll than most other players even seem to care abuot.

Maybe it makes a difference but by the upper ranks berserk/warcry alone with the random bits you get on dam gear will cover it without any conscious effort.

Hit roll plays against armor class. High enough AC might make the opponents miss their attack, unless you have enough hit roll. AC plays a role in the very low level, where it actively protects you from opponents attacks via misses, since the opponents hit roll tends to be low at those levels. At hero, armor class is practically meaningless for most characters, as everyone has enough hit roll to bypass it in those levels.

I think, regardless of how good your hitroll is you can still get "misses" if your weapon skill is bad. But it is an every once in a while sort of thing. Because even with 20-25 hitroll I've found that at lower levels I still get misses every once in a while when the weapon skill is not 100%.

I really wonder how much of a role the armor use skills (other than just with shields) and aim/precise aim/other aim skills play at hero. Or in general... if there is a point in getting the aim skills all the way up.
