4501, Prem. Battlefield Favor
Posted by CaptainAverage on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I posted this before, I thought, unless it was deleted (which there was nothing offensive therein, so I doubt that's the case)

I didn't particularly want Kaeldran's stats to be posted up in the premium battlefield, but it appears someone wanted to spend the money to see it. I was wondering if there could be a line in the premium battlefield post stating the name of whomever made the donation. Of course, only character names. "At the request of Lathan", "Submitted by Kaeldran" or something along those lines. If not, no big deal. I would like to sincerely thank whomever wanted to see Kaeldran's.. er.. not so great lowbie stats.

Donating to CF is never a waste of money, and I figure if player's got involved in the thanking process, it might make the experience more rewarding.

We don't know the "character name" of the donater, only the email address associated with the paypal account that made the donation. I don't see us posting people's email addresses so web scrapers can then spam then unnecessarily.

Personally, I'd follow up your regular battlefield thread with the thanks, and see if the person in question steps forward.

4503, What if you don't want your character posted?

Along the lines above, what if you deliberately do not pay to have a character put up on the premium battlefield? Can someone else have it put up despite the player's wishes? I'd like to think the player has control over his or her own character.

Along the lines I already mentioned. We don't know if the person donating is the person who played or not. We know the email address associated with the paypal account they used to donate. The short end of it, really, is if you don't want your character posted, don't play.

We have in the past deleted roles of characters who made the request when they made the donation, and that's fine, but not posting at all isn't going to be an option.

Just so I am clear on this, you are saying that I can play a character, complete that character in whatever way (age, delete, con, auto) and even if I do not want it on the battlefield, you'll put it up if someone else, anyone else, wants?

Why? Shouldn't that really be the decision of the person whose character it was?

In the absence of anything from the player, which I think is far more likely (or obviously the approval of the player) then sure, go ahead an post.

But if the player specifically says they don't want their character on the pb, why would you do so? Doesn't that seem unfair?

I can't imagine it's because you want every last five dollars. This circumstance is so rare it wouldn't make a difference.

Oh, I did a quick check to make sure this is the gameplay forum, I didn't want a "this is the bug forum" response. :P

I think he's saying that he can't tell whether the person paying and asking to have the character posted is the person who played the character. Similarly he can't tell if someone who asks for it not to be posted is the person who played the character.

You know what? I think you're right. I missed the point of his post.

That then begs the question however: if you can demonstrate it was your character, can you have it not be posted. And to be honest I don't think a lot of people would email lying about it being their character in order to NOT post it. The reverse perhaps.

Anyway, that's it.

I think we'd rather keep the policy that:

A) Doesn't involve Zulgh having to stare at emails to determine if sufficient "proof" of character ownership exists,

and

B) Gets us $5 towards our server costs. It's free to play, not free to run.

4510, Solution to Part A.

If it's that big of a concern for the player, why not just leave a note to Immortal before you delete the character, or during the ghost-time you have when you age (con too?) die.
4511, People change their minds

Then people wanting to post the character sheet will just write "oh, I changed my mind!" And besides, no one has time to keep track of which player doesn't want their character sheet published.
4513, Are there like 5 good reasons why you wouldn't want it posted?
Posted by Wilhath on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I can't think of any that stand up to minor examination.
4518, How much do you like to code?
Posted by Exit on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Since you've already tied in deletion into the Battlefield forum, why not add one more parameter that's posted along with age, cabal, hours that can be set by the character at any time during the game; a simple toggle-able command deciding whether the character's sheet can be viewed or not..

Ie - premium yes
You now allow your past feats to be viewed by others.
premium no
Your history cannot be viewed by others.

..with the default at time of creation set to yes. Aside from the trouble of coding this, you would also be bringing the OOC premium battlefield into the context of CF, which I think you have been trying to avoid, but hell, it's a solution. I would think there are many players that would prefer their roles, comments, and final stats kept private.
