44468, Serious Question: Are we done with Role Play?
Posted by Alston on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It really seems like it.

I'm forced to think that the magority of players need things spelled out to them in OOC terms in order to understand or they just don't care.

With my last character I tried various creative ways to ask for a group and almost invariably the person I spoke to would repeat the question back as if I had asked the a question pertaining to Chemistry or quantum theory.

It was enough that I just told them nevermind. I have no desire to travel with somebody that stupid because communication in a text base game would be too painful.

And it wasn't just groups, it was, were you just killed, do you know if someone is good or evil, I just got beaten buy someone in PK.

It's utterly mind boggling for me that so many people have no ability to infer.

So does anyone care? The bar for RP has always been very low here but it just seems as if it's gone now.

I agree about roleplay being very important, and many just ignoring it.

That said, however, some view the obfuscation of certain facts that are true in Thera...as roleplay.... And it's not necessarily the case.

For instance, there are certain facts about Thera's Universe, that are just different than facts on earth in the real world.

In the real world, you can't say someone is evil, just on the color of their skin. In the real world, you don't have multiple dieties...who can and do make their presence known physically....in thera...you actually have those dieties who enforce and teach that Good and evil....Light and Dark...are REAL things....

It sometimes grates on me, when a drow or duergar or fire giant will excoriate me for being "racist" for just assuming they are evil and need to die just because of their race. Are there members of those races who have made the long, arduous, dangerous, and painful journey away from EVIL...yes. But 99.999999% of those races are EEEEVIIIIL....and if my detect evil shows a red aura around you...you are evil too...no matter if your character agrees with it...that's Theran FACT......I can understand a role here and there where the evil person really doesn't think themselves evil...and really does think all the goodies that want to kill them are just racists....but why does it seem like sooooo many of them have that role?

And...in the Universe of Thera....gathering in groups of three is the most effective way of impressing your guildmaster....Gaining strength, gaining circles. Advancing in my guild....I don't see these as poor rp......but there is a subset of RP elitists who SEEM to think that even those phrases are too ooc.....and then needlessly go on to obfuscate everything.

I agree. I believe it is because of a lack of definition, extensive documentation, and enforcement. I made a post recently on the other forums (main board) about RP, sort of a guideline for people who aren’t familiar with it pre-cf.
44501, You made an RP one too? I don't recall you making such post.

The one you made about descs is here, though:

I love the look of the ideal dreamgame you've constructed where everybody is 100% seamlessly character 100% of the time. But CF has never been that ideal and will never reach that ideal, because that's exactly what it is - an ideal. You can work towards it - but it's never going to be there.

You're saying "what happened" and "when did people stop caring" - but I don't think that ideal point in the past you're referencing to ever existed or could even possibly exist.

Sure - it'd be great if we worked towards that ideal. And maybe that's the post you should have written - a post about the ideal immersive roleplaying environment, how it's what we want and how people can work towards achieving it. Instead you wrote a post blaming and demeaning the rest of the playerbase for not conforming to this impossibly detailed picture you have drawn in your head.

My advice: you clearly have an active imagination. Use it to fill in the blanks where people don't fulfill "their end of the bargain" as you see it. It's what everyone else does - instead of relying upon others for their happiness.

44489, There are some valid reasons for making you spell it out
Posted by sezdral on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
1) The other person might think you're asking them to go explore.
2) The other person knows your ethos/align conflict, and is trying to derail you into thinking he's a neutral party and delay grouping because you're obviously going to whip his ass
3) The other person is trying to whip your ass, evil style, and would like to decline travelling so he can come catch you while you're ranking, and hopefully in the banter he manages to draw out your preferred ranking spot.

For Example
You(ELF): "I heard of your formidable feats great warrior, let us continue to march on"
EvilHumanWarrior:"Hmmm.. I do not consider myself very formidable. What do you mean by march on anyway? Do you mean the march to banish darkness from the lands?"
...The banter continues until obviously the one expecting the EvilHumanWarrior to RP in a certain way gets exasperated and moves on. The EvilHumanWarrior gets xpadd for sphere deception, maybe.

The only thing wrong is your bitching. if you didnt understand the nonsense title.
44477, NONSENSE!?!
Posted by Onewingedangel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Sir, draw thine sword! TIS A DUEL!

On a more serious note, some people suck at RP, or put in only the bar minimum in order for PK. If it's great RP you're looking for, instead of bitching here on the forums, you should keep looking around. If you manage to find one of my characters, I'm always down for some good RP. I know Tesline's characters are fun to RP with, I remember his fire warrior...Growlna.

You're just giving up too easy.

Testicles...that is all.

Edit: Had to add this in Growlna's memory...ME DANGLES!

Edit II: I spelled edit wrong...
44487, This is a bit unrelated, but..

I wish people who choose to use thou-speech in their RP would know how to properly use the related grammar. I generally cringe when I see people use forms like "thou are", which are just as wrong as "I are" or "he are". I don't know about other people, but it does annoy me a bit to see people use thou in their RP and not conjugate the related verbs the way it should be done.

Did I write it wrong? if I did do try and correct it.
44494, There's at least a spelling error, but the entire sentence is kind of weird to me.
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
"For thee to see dothe light gather thy heart and burn thy wench from thine soul."

The dothe is wrong, at least. I am not entirely sure what the sentence is supposed to be. I am guessing this:

"For thee to see does the light gather thy heart and burn thy wench from thine soul."

Do point it out if this wasn't the correct interpretation. In any case, the error reminded me of those cases in the game where people have clearly used thou-structures incorrectly and I commented.

Correct usage is found in wikipedia:

44472, What roleplay really means.
Posted by wareagle on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
This has been a trademark topic to/for(I don't know which one is right Graatch and Scar :P)you, I will put this out there.

I think the group roleplay dynamic is more perverted when someone says 'shall we venture with xyz' and then don't say anything for the thirty minutes you are ranking. To be bluntly honest, I am in that category as well I have tried to get better but one thing is for sure....99.9 percent of our playerbase does EXACTLY that.

So if we want to use the word roleplay about this, we need to keep that in mind and start roleplaying out our groups or this is just all moot and I can just reply "I'm busy perfecting assassinate, tell me where you are."
44480, This is my point.
Posted by Alston on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I typically try to RP the Group from formation to finish. But what I have gotten for replies lately or repetitions of my question or “What do you mean?” It’s as if the person on the other end does not understand that I am trying to initiate RP or that they can’t infer the meaning of my question.

For instance;I see a character that’s a ghost.
You say, “It looks like you just suffered a hard fall, what happened?”
They say, “What do you mean?”

You tell someone, “The guild rosters show that you’re an intrepid Paladin. I am forming a party to go to
go out into the realms and grow in stature.”

They tell you, “Go out into the realms? What do you mean?”

And so on…

The above aren’t actual interactions but they are in line with what I have been experiencing lately.
I’m just going to say I’m through even trying to RP anymore. I can’t find anyone else who is.
44482, I don't know why you're running into this.
Posted by Homard on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I like to think that I'm a fairly good RPer, and it's something I try to get into with every character.

However, it's been my experience that the vast majority of RP happens over CB. I'm a serial Villager, yes, but I've never failed to get outstanding RP over Battle CB. While playing Mauz I was also in the company of some truly amazing RPers and if you get a couple of them on CB at the same time the results are tremendous.

The next step is via tell. I get plenty of RP done, mostly with enemies, via this method.

When it comes to ranking, though, there is no doubt that RP suffers. However, it's really just human nature at work. If you're a level 50 character who is finally heroing with your cabal leaders' aid, you're probably RPing quite a bit, just as if you were working hard with your friends you'd be ####ting a bunch.

But if you're grouped with people who you formed a group with simply for ranking, it's like when you're in a situation working with people you don't know well. Conversation tends to be direct and about the task at hand. It's just easier that way.

All in all, I don't really have a problem with it as I get most of my RP fix over CB and I also fire a lot of tells off post battle, which sometimes gets excellent responses.

It's also important to keep in mind the difference between RPing "with" someone and RPing "at" someone.
44488, Funny you should say that.
Posted by Alston on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Battle has always been where I encountered the best of and most frequent CF RP. I guess I really have no bitches with it there.
44486, My point is this.
Posted by Tesline on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I have never had anyone ever...ever...ever....ever....ever....ever...ever...ever say that to me EVER. Either our characters never meet or your full of ####.
44492, If I don't get your obscure wording, it doesn't mean I'm unwilling to RP.
Posted by Murphy on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It just means I don't get your obscure wording, is all.

I have no idea what's going on in cf but I am positively crying from laughter reading a post that complains about communication in a text based game being too difficult for supposedly stupid people, while at the same time contains multiple writing errors. Priceless!
