44012, Can we get rid of mobs that dent?
Posted by Oldril on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Or just the dent skill altogether?

44032, It used to be all sorts of annoying,
Posted by Vortex Magus on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Now I'm satisfied its more of a tactical choice than a griefing one. I'd also rather have a mob dent me than boneshatter me any day of the week.

I actually was thinking of letting some mobs that lost dent and weaponbreaker get them back now that it doesn't actually destroy the item.

Why it's just annoying.

When you have 200 HP and you're tanking a pincersvirf, would you rather the Destructor dent you or cranial you?
There's always good and bad in more variety.

44040, Dent/Acid Blast, Questions.
Posted by Kalageadon on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've recently felt the effect of both of these abilities breaking and/or hurting my gear.
The problem I encountered was that I can't get any of the "only damaged but not broken" gear repaired, that I know of. Is this correct? -Just read below that you can fix these items, so I'll have to experiment.-
When acid blasted, I see all the item values drop to 0, so none can be sold or bartered and some of it breaks. Ok, I can understand the unbroken item isn't pristine but down to 0 value?
When this type of thing happens to the protective values of said armor, do they drop?
If an item is repaired after acid blast, does the value go back up?
Some of these items have a 2x or more repair cost to item value ratio. Is that intentional?
I'm sure that I've forgotten to ask something but these couple things, I'm really curious about.

44027, Fight someone with gates for example
Posted by lasentia on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
And arguably dent is quite valuable, but in the long term him using that does not actually hurt the guy with gates, since he can recoup the AC via repait instead of having to regather the item. This just helps the guy with dent in that specific fight to have another tactic, and at the same time does not grief the gates char because it is far less of a set back than having the gear destroyed outright.

44033, Sparked an old idea I wanted to post.

I know you all are of the opinion that mobs wielding illusionary weapons can't be disarmed, weaponbroke, etc. Is there any possibility of getting this decision changed? It removes some very good options, particularly for melee classes, in combat.
I wouldn't have a problem if after a couple rounds, the illusionary weapon in question does a prog to re-appear in the mob's hands.
Example Log:
(100%hp 95%m 65%mv) weaponbreaker You break a gray spirit's weapon with a mighty blow from your axe! Your slash MANGLES a gray spirit! Your slash MASSACRES a gray spirit! Your chop EVISCERATES a gray spirit! Your slash MANGLES a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting ***DEMOLISHES*** a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting MANGLES a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting ***DEMOLISHES*** a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting ***DEMOLISHES*** a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting ***DEMOLISHES*** a gray spirit!
(100%hp 95%m 65%mv) A gray spirit's punch EVISCERATES a manta ray! A gray spirit's punch misses a manta ray. Your slash DISMEMBERS a gray spirit! Your slash misses a gray spirit. Your slash MANGLES a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting ***DEMOLISHES*** a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting MANGLES a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting MANGLES a gray spirit! A manta ray's sting ***DEMOLISHES*** a gray spirit!
(100%hp 95%m 65%mv) The illusion of a gray spirit's weapon manifests as a titanium longsword!
(100%hp 95%m 65%mv) A gray spirit's slash MASSACRES a manta ray!
Etc., etc.

Ear-marking this idea in case any of you guys, on some random Monday afternoon, decide you want to take it on?

What I'm getting at is, in the case of me specifically, I don't have a strong preference for your version of things over the current version of things. I can make an argument for why either is a better solution.
Therefore it will never make it to the top of my to-do list -- it will always be pre-empted by something else that I feel more strongly about. You'd probably get more gnome warrior edges first.
(But for that same reason, I don't care if Zulg or Scarabaeus decided they thought it was a great idea, either.)
|
44041, Another problem with it, now that Zulg make broken.
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I suppose in theory, one could make it so that only mobiles could touch/use illusionary, if it's feasable for how illusionary works, but weaponbreaker/dent is not that it's GONE, but now it's maybe a broken, illusionary item that needs to be magically repaired.
Somehow, that just strikes me as godawful to try to make work. Not for any lack of merit to the idea, but just realization of *I* wouldn't expect to ever see it happen with that many possible horrible cases to work out, I would just chalk it up to one of the FEW advantages mobs get. You can't lag out that archmage mob, now that warrior/ranger mob can actually fight w/ a weapon in hand for once. Ah well.
|
44013, Much as most of us would like this, repair is good enough I'd say.
Posted by lasentia on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I think putting repair in the game makes it a non-issue, or at least far less of one. You can repair dented things even if they don't get broken, so dent is almost a useless skill, but it could be situationally useful in a fight where the guy can't run and repair his eq- but after the fight ends he has not actually lost it, just has to get it repaired.

44014, Item destruction = grief
Posted by Oldril on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
There really isn't any other explanation.
Its a hassle and a waste of time in an already way too time consuming game.

44016, Added difficulty /= grief

Mother ####ers stop complaining about wasted time in CF. IT'S A ####ING GAME THAT IS WHAT IT IS FOR.
Christ, things get easier and easier around here and still the whining and crying continues.

44030, Calm down buddy
Posted by Oldril on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
When I was under 21 I had nothing but free time for CF.
Now that I am pushing 40 with career/wife/family I would like to spend time having fun not doing menial tasks just to get back up to where I was before the battle with some dumbass mob.
Lets focus on the fun part of CF. I dont think a single player thinks repairing gear busted by a mob is fun.

44031, I'm calm, I'm calm.
Posted by Tsunami on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
My morning posts are always so angry and mean. I blame the cat for chewing on my legs.
Reparing gear busted by a mob isn't fun. Neither is losing a fight, getting looted, finding preps, spamming skills, con dying, age dying, perma-lag, assassinations, etc. etc. etc.
Yet these are all things that contribute to the over all theme and glory that is CF. There has just been too many concessions making the game easier and more auto-piloty as it is.
Here we are in a time where they JUST took the step to make dent and other stuff not destroy equipment, and we already have somone lobbying to take the skill completely out. No matter how much easier and less of a time sink they make it, there will always be a call for "easier!" and "faster!"
I just get angry because I feel like so many in the community won't be happy until they all can have a 500-0 pk ratio on a 100 hour character. Like everyone has forgotten the simple joy of just BEING your character and being able to influence the world in a meaningful way (thanks to PK and hardcore rulesets). I used to read a lot of fantasy novels when I was a wee lad, CF let's us be IN those novels and make our own.
It's just too bad everyone wants to toss it away.
Yes. I know I derailed that quite thoroughly. More just an explanation/apology for the anger.

Let me first say I agree with you about repairing and mobs denting. It's not too big a deal, and you can take steps to mitigate it most of the time, so it's a manageable setback.
But I would argue that there's a difference between tedious gameplay challenges and fun gameplay challenges. Con Dying, Age Dying, everything you listed except spamming skilsl and prep gathering are non-tedious actitivites. They don't take a lot of time to accomplish, they're just frustrating when they happen. Spamming skills and gathering preps are tedious activities. Of those two, I personally think spamming skills is a gameplay element that should go away. Gathering preps is pretty tedious, but at least it makes for some interesting decisions (Do I use this hard-to-get prep now? Is it worth the time? What if my preps are stolen, maybe I should sacrifice a wear slot for a wearable container). By comparison, skill spam is much more of a straight patience test. There's chance of getting PKed while doing it, but honestly that hasn't rarely an issue.
Anyway, point is, games should be fun not work, and just because something is bad for your character neither means it's pro-fun nor anti-fun.

44038, I'm in complete agreement with Tsunami
Posted by Onewingedangel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Yes, skill spamming is tedious, but honestly, is it that bad? If you want something good, put work into it. That's what sets this apart from everything else. Yes, you CAN get your buddy who's a decked hero to deck out your level 11, but that doesn't automatically make it so you'll kill everyone in your PK range. It's so much that goes into this game to make each character better, tactics, gear, practicing, skill mastery. Yes, it would be less tedious...but then again, once you have that powerhouse character, it's less worth it, because it was basically handed to you.
Face it, Carrion Fields will always be one of the most competitive games I have ever played, and I don't want it to get easier. Keep dent, keep skill spamming. It's what makes a character, whether or not they have the patience to work at those things. That's why I love invokers, You put so much work pre-hero into them for spamming, and it's one of those times it really pays off. I know I worked for those spells.
If you want an easy game with little work for a good character, go play WoW or something.

44039, Agreed
Posted by Tsunami on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I agree on skill spam/preps too. I just don't see them as "needed to compete" in the first place. Skill spam specifically. Good prepping obviously has the potential to increase your effectiveness quite a bit.
