You're assuming that a lower level imm would get a message saying "You can't see that IP address."

Silly assumption.

Someone lower than me who could check IPs (which is not Reksah, btw) would simply see the IP address that Tavlin has played from and would have no way of knowing that was my IP unless they had jotted down "Ok, Brom was on this IP and Twist posted that he played Brom so that's clearly Tavlin."

Only imms of a certain level can even see IP's. Otherwise, they have to check with we higher ups to see if their mortal leader that has stopped showing up did so to play alts or just really hasn't been around.
