40100, Weird race/class autocombos idea
Posted by Explosion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I was thinking of minotaur AP, and one idea came to my mind.
What if sometimes, very very rarely (once per month, for example), there would be a unique choice of class for a race that is not allowed to pick that class (similar to monitaur slots)?
For example, I am going to roll and elf bard. I chose race elf and whoa: amongst other classes, I see an anti-paladin! Wow!
To preserve uniqueness, there could be likited slots like that. Maybe 3, or 5.
Why it's good? It will make CF not so same again and again and again and again. Not necessary i will be that lucky guy; but I would surely be HAPPY to see an elven AP, or fire giant paladin, or minotaur bard.
Yes, some of those combos will suck, some will be supereffective. But it will be fun anyways. And it's not difficult to add.
Yes, I know. You can roll an elf, write a long role, RP and hope to get your class changed in 100+ hours. Nobody bothers with that for obvious reasons. With that system, those combos would be more common, and it would be good.

40158, These are possible no reason to make them automated

Odd class, race and alignment combos are possible already. They are possible thru RP rewards. If you can't RP the combo and get the rewards then I don't see a reason to allow for it through an automated process. The current system ensures the rarity that these odd combos deserve.

40160, There are A LOT of a good reasons.

I've answered to this question already, but I will repeat. 99,99% of playerbase won't bother to do that. A lot of people can RP that, but they won't, due to reasons:
1. Knowing our imms and sometimes extreme rare immterraction, or spending 50 or even 100+ hours waiting for your imm for the empowerment or tattoo, players won't bother doing something even more difficult;
2. Since this would totally depends on the imm and his mood, even a perfect role and roleplaying person can get turned off. For example, this particular imm had no sex during last three weeks and he was drinking beer the whole night, andn now he had a strong headachie and sexual dissatisfaction. In this situation, player will be pissed off with 99% chance (partially sarcastic here, but such things happened before and still happens sometimes). Knowing that, another huge part of the players won't bother.
3. Ofter truly good people aren't sure in their RP abilities and believe they suck at RP - and they are wrong. Some of them are really good to pull such combo, but they would never think of something like this otherwise. Now, they see a choice and thinks - "heck, why not!"
4. As was mentioned before, this could improve RP of some players who didn't bother to RP before.
5. As was mentioned before, it could bring vet players who left CF back to the game.
6. Some of those race/class combos would suck PK-wise, and otherwise nobody would do it. But when they have a choice to play that combo, or play regular character, someone would surely pick that combo. And we would see combos that would never appear in the game if not that system.
From risks, I see only two: 1. Those players could have not too good RP sometims (but that may be solved by immterractions and immtalks); 2. There could be supercool combos sometimes who would kick everyone's butts. Though I don't think it's something CF playerbase cannot handle. At least, none of those combos would be worse than a lich, or questy shapeshifter form, or questy familiar.

40116, Are you serious about these.

Using his voice, a minotaur bard is able to create powerful illusions in the minds of the listeners.
I can also think of a mino AP mooing the incantations in mino speak. Not that they do anything but he sure tries.
Elf AP. Elves can't be assassins because they abhor killing, but AP, why not.
Fire Paladin. He can start vanquishing evil by killing himself.

At least it would distract you from whatever you're doing. And you're pretty harmless when rolling around laughing on the floor.
> Fire Paladin. He can start vanquishing evil by killing himself.
Fire Paladin, is that the 'induct none' variation that employers have?

40120, Mino bard could deafen with his songs as a side effect.

Fire giant paladin - don't see a reason why not, if there were drow paladins (forgot the book - WoT?) and elven necromancers.

40123, Two big errors
Posted by Valkenar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
1. CF is not part of any other fantasy universe. CF uses some standard fantasy themes, and (in the past) lifted some material out of fantasy novels. That doesn't mean that because WoT has drow paladins that CF should too.
2. The things you're referencing I expect, are mostly rarities even in their own worlds. And the reason the story is about those things is because they're rare and special and happened only once. I mean, people used to love to trot out Salvatore, but Drizz't was the only good drow that ever existed, in that series. Similary, CF has had one elven necromancer (evil), one good-aligned necromancer (half-drow), and a handful of other special things. It's not li

1. So what? Does that mean CF must remain stereotyped - because it's not the part of some other universe? Are we so imagination-limited here that are so afraid to make a tiny step into direction of interest and fun? I do not see why CF should NOT to have something like that too.
2. It would be rarities. 3-4 such characters per year, and it could happen only once too (per 3-4 years at least). There are tonns of different unique combinations, and they can be not repeating until all were played. So, if you will see elven necromancer today, next one mot likely will be available 3-4 years later. It would be unique.

WoT doesn't have drow paladins or drow in the first place. Myrddraals, trollocs, whitecloaks, windfinders, Tar Valon, Aridhol and Shadar Logoth were WoT references.

40106, Is that worse than a duergar axe spec with terrible RP?
Posted by Marcus_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Anyway, I think if (most) people get a chance to play something unique, they will also step up their RP in turn.
edit: oops meant as reply to Valkenar

40105, My biggest issue is the RP
Posted by Valkenar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I don't want to see a duergar ranger, or a dwarven shapeshifter with terrible RP.

40108, Same as with other races and classes
Posted by Explosion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Personally, I see no difference between wirds race/class combo and any other character. sh##ty RP is a ####ty RP, but there are very few people with truly sh##ty RP. I'd say 90% of people who I interract with are good enough to manage those weird combo.
Also, usually those with sh##ty RP are not living very long anyways. I don't see a big problem here. And further, duergar ranger with sh##ty RP can be a real badass and you won't know if it's his duergarish RP or sh##ty RP :)
So, conclusion: if there is a chance that in 90% (ok, even 70%) RP will be good or ok, and in 10% (and up to 30%) it will be sh##ty, this game is worth playing.
Also, answering to Vortexmagus: "Anyway, I think if (most) people get a chance to play something unique, they will also step up their RP in turn." - completely agree here. It may aswell improve quality of their RP.
And probably those combos will not be able to move up above 10 level until they have approved role, very much like desc/sphere, but with higher requirements for quality.

40102, The problem with limited slots
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is they can effectively be passed amongst a group of players.
i.e., I delete my elf ap and send a message to my friend telling them to roll a character so they can get a "special" one.
|
40103, Not a problem at all.
Posted by Explosion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
There are a lot of algorithms to avoid that. On top of the head, this slot can pop up at the next week, at random time, then disappear for a day if nobody took it, and pop-up 3 days later. And etc etc etc.
Assuming that those characters will be played to 30+ levels, whole playerbase can see that this character is no more in graveyard.
And even more, there can be a special tweet on twitter, informing everyone that slot will be opened soon. And even a e-mail notification for those who are registred - it could even bring some players who are not playing back to CF.
|
40104, What about those of us who don't like twitter?
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I take your point that things can be done, but I'm not keen on the twitter/email idea.
|
40159, I think the email/twitter thing is a great idea, I think this whole thing is a great idea.
Posted by Amberion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
1: I think people will step up their RP if they manage to get hold of a unique class/race combo.
2: Set a restriction of lvling past lvl 10 unless role/desc is imm-aproved. (As there won't be too many of these it should be easy for imms to check it through quickly enough.)
3: Using twitter/emails to inform that a slot will be opening up soon might, as someone said, bring some people back to CF to try and get one of those chars.
I'm thinking that maybe 1 unique character every 6 months or so, and after six months there's a chance someone can get another. Some restrictions in how to roll one etc should be put in place.
I'm thinkin all sorts of unqiue here, most combos would'nt be that good. Felar invoker? Or even worse, firegiant invoker? fire assassin? (He would be failing a lot trying to hide. heh)
As I said, I think this is a GREAT idea.
