39942, Respond initiating combat. Bug/Design?
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I realize this could very well be by design, but if respond is supposed to use their aggressive movements against them, how could you use this move before combat's started? (IE: Them attacking you)

Zyphain is resting here.
(Red Aura) Otjiza is here.
Drekthar is resting here.

wilderness <1115hp 440m 1064mv 28750tnl (-21.56%)> whe
respond Otjiza
People near you:
(PK) Drekthar A Trail Going up Into the Mountains
(PK) Bhowaer A Trail Going up Into the Mountains
(PK) Zyphain A Trail Going up Into the Mountains
(PK) Otjiza A Trail Going up Into the Mountains

wilderness <1115hp 440m 1064mv 28750tnl (-21.56%)> You predict a moment when Otjiza moves aggressively.
You time a blow to Otjiza's arm, which lets you strike a jeweled broadsword from his grasp!
*****DISARMED*****
Your disarming blow decimates Otjiza!
Otjiza has a few scratches.

wilderness <1115hp 440m 1064mv 28750tnl (-21.56%)> inten

Otjiza dodges your punch.
Otjiza dodges your punch.
Otjiza dodges your punch.
You foresee Otjiza's punch and move yourself to safety.
You absorb the force of Otjiza's punch with a suit of ancient dwarven platemail.
You foresee Zyphain's wrath and move yourself to safety.
Drekthar's wrath is powerless against you.
Drekthar's cleave DISMEMBERS you!
Drekthar's wrath is powerless against you.

Most of the monk abilities involve some form of short term
prediction (they forsee this, anticipate that, etc...)
It's all about seeing the future man. Monks just start to
move before the even has taken place. yeah we'll go with that.
:)
What do ya think? RP-wise it sort of makes sense, but CF vs RW
then a player can always state they were never going to hit
fistywrath the paladin in the first place... ahh but then we
go to minority report where maybe just maybe the future you
envision is not exactly what was REALLY going to happen and
you have made a mistake. Hey if we can't make mistakes then
I submit that I should be able to avoid EVERY hit that avoid
can dodge. Gimme that and I'll go with not ever making a mistake.
:) hehe In case people don't realize THAT WAS A JOKE.

Honestly I didn't know this would open combat, and though I
do now I'll probably hold off until someone with more clout
chimes in about it, in case it is a bug.
39951, I honestly don't think it's a bug.

I started to post it on the bug board, but then figured it's more likely either by design, or by (arguably bad) design. Hence, posting it to Gameplay w/ my 2-hander comment as well. I rarely run into the situation, but have played 2-handers, and it didn't really make a lot of sense to me.

So, mostly just an up for discussion. I like some of the responses, and even think Bhowaer's has a certain amount of sense, but I'm also sure there's going to be situations where someone's ONLY trying to run away, yet you can magically intercept a non-existant aggresive move. At the VERY least, I could see respond acting like a lost concentration spell where they then start attacking you, and then you disarm them on their first attack.

Anyways, like I said...I expect it's more "by design" than "bug", so brought up the discussion :P

When ah walked in on that feller, ems knew that it were time fer ems ter pay fer ems ways, and as ah were movin ems were already makin a move ter try ter stick meh first.

But ah were ready fer that, and stuck a blow on ems arm that sent that broadsword right back down ter ems side.

An aggresive movement could be so so many things. Sure, swinging a sword, trying to pincer, all those are obvious things, but picturing how things would look if it was real, it could be as simple as drawing a sword, or even retching for the sword hilt. Think of things you see in movies, and people "going for their gun" is absolutely an aggresive move, even if they aren't fighting yet.
39947, feels buggy to me

Since they might not actually be aggressive in any way.
39950, It probably is

Anything that promotes behaviour from a paladin not starting a fight with co wrath must be a bug.
