39791, Illusionary Items Ideas
Posted by JoeCloud on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've played CF for a long time... on and off (mostly off) over something like 8-10 years. I still consider myself a newbie of sorts. I've had three heros and maybe a dozen mid-range (30ish) characters. I've find some sleeks with my mage IC. I've had some small Immteraction. :)
One change that I *loved* when I went in was the (Illusionary) tag. I know that it was probably already discussed to death the first time, but I wanted to share a thought/request:
I like to explore, and often because of real-life time constraints (i.e. I have to be able to log out on a very short notice) I explore a lot solo. Surprisingly, I've also found that when I have discussed certain areas IC with other characters, I'm starting to find out things that most of them don't know. :D On one of my recent expeditions I spent a couple hours in an area explore, fought some nasty mobs, died a bit, and in the end came to an empty container in a special room. From the clues in the area, I think there should be something in this "container" but most likely it's Limited (perhaps even unique). I love finding new things but I may never know what I should have found there. It was hard enough to get there the first time and I don't think I could convince a group to go on a wild goose chase.
So my thought was this: Can the Illusionary system be tweaked to give a hand to new explorers without tipping any scales in PK? How about these two ideas:
--(Illusionary) items vanish 1-2 ticks after either being "moved" from their original location, whether chest or mob, etc. --(Illusionary) items can have identify, lore, contact other planes, etc. used on them, but... --(Illusionary) items cannot be otherwise wielded, worn, eaten, drunk, quaffed, located or used. They do not respond to special words, phrases, or normal programming.
Unless I'm missing something this would help players find what's "out there" without significantly changing any PK aspect. In fact, if I knew that X/Y item was normally in said spot and offered Z perks, I might be motivated to start looking around to see who has it and how I can kill them! ;)
I know the Immortal staff is busy and has RL to attend to as well... but aside from tricky? programming, is there a reason why this shouldn't be done? Thanks for listening.

39792, I think the programming or code for this would be a nightmare.

Not a terrible idea though.

39793, Would it bear any similarities with items that rot, perhaps? (n/t)

Zulgh has said pretty much that though. The programming wound be a nig...
nightmare.
