39292, Bringing some things over from Dio's to Wiki
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Do you think the Wiki could include a few useful tools like what's on Dio's? I'm thinking specifically the Thief Designer, Wrap Chop (for role, desc, and note), and Log Formatter. I'll build it from scratch (so no code copying is done) and give it to y'all to put up if you want.

Would be a nice feature to have when Dio's is down.
39301, The thief designer was made by theheretic

It is his permission alone that is needed for hosting that tool in the official site if the Imms want to do that.
39302, There's that
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
...or it can just be recreated from scratch.

I really don't get why everyone likes to crap on my ideas. Dio's is down constantly and those things are useful tools.
39303, How is my post crapping on your ideas?

Getting the permission should be simple enough. I e-mailed the guy about it when asking about using it in Dio's (if Gabe wanted to do so) and he responded during the same day, allowing us to use it. I thought that Imms would feel more comfortable about it if things were done in a legally correct manner and they were using it with a permission.

Or you could recreate it from the scratch. I'm not opposed to you doing that. Feel free to do so, I'm not the one putting in the coding work.
39313, Fine. But this is how it came across:

>>It is his permission alone that is needed for hosting that tool in the official site if the Imms want to do that.<<

I read as "You can't do it. That's copyrighted material. Too bad."

<diatribe>Everything about the internet is a ripoff of something else. He wrote something based on CF content. Whether it was with the CF staff's blessing or not, I have no idea. Basically, it should boil down to, "It's fair use, free content someone else who was a fan of the game made." </diatribe>

I'll get off my high horse now because I'm rather irked and could continue ad nauseum on the subject.
39321, I think you misunderstood a bit.

The version theheretic wrote is the one that one should ask his permission for (since he coded it up). If you write a similar tool, then the permission to use it that is needed is yours since it's your code.

I just thought that using the existing tool would have been easier since it already exists. Dunno how updatable it is though, since theheretic mentioned something akin to the code being a bit messy when he made the program. If you think it is a good idea to write a new thief tool, go ahead, but I don't see why the Imms wouldn't be able to use the existing tool just as well if a permission is given.

The point of my post was to state that the thief tool is not property of Dioxide's/Gabe, but a separate program that could be attached here just as well. Whether or not doing a new one is redundant, you can be the judge of that.
39327, Take it

When I made it I messaged Zulghinlour about it and offered it to the official site. I didn't get a response for whatever reason so I posted to qhcf. I want it used and I'd prefer it on the official site.
39329, FWIW, I never get responses either
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
And this was before I riled things up enough to assume they didn't like me.
39331, Can you make it work as a html page?
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
As in, put the html of the thief designer as a post attachment and thus have it hosted in the official forums for the times Dio's is down?

It is not as desirable as a proper page put by Imms, but it is better than nothing.

If you want to tack a nice permissive license on the top of it and put it someplace I can easily grab it (I don't have a CF email account), I'll put it up on the official website.

It'll be marked as a player-contributed utility written by you that isn't maintained (bug fixes, keeping point costs / prereqs accurate, etc.), but at least it'll be there and available when other sites are down.

There is a link on the website (under Help) as well as a stickied post in the New Player Q&A forum to Zulg's formatting tool:

http://forums.carrionfields.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=5&topic_id=2639&mesg_id=2639&page=

System requirements appear to be in the post.

As a side note, it looks like the thief tool on Dio's is purely Javascript, so you could save the page and use it offline.
39296, The html page one doesn't work
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I may be able to clean it up and get it to work, though.
39326, Anyone know which characters are invalid?
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I rewrote the HTML page with the role reformatter. Tried doing it in javascript since I've never coded anything in that before. It seems to treat anything you put in the box as a string, no matter what, so you get all characters returned (i.e. quotes, semi-colons, ampersands, etc).

So, question: Which characters are invalid to the MUD specifically? I know I'd have to parse out semi-colons at least.
39332, You mean Mort's formatter?
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It works just fine for me.
39342, Hmm...
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm using Firefox and can't get it to work at all, except for the clear button. Character count isn't working either. Which platform is it working with you on?
39352, I tested a bit
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It worked with Opera and IE, but did not work in Firefox.
39298, Also
Posted by BaronMySoul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
This is a stretch, but would you be willing to let me have a list of help topic names? I can clean up your helpfile code to perform a live search function (like code hinting), which would make that system more useful.

This is also on dios. You probably never clicked the Helpfiles tab.
39322, It is rather outdated.
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I wish someone would run the helpfile script to update it from the game.
