38723, Gear Hoarding
Posted by Valkenar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Inspired by Thelana's death thread.
To those complaining bitterly about gear hoarding, why do you care so much? So you can't get that gear, so what? It's not like your enemies have it either. Unless you think that you're simply entitled to super-leet gear, the absence of it from the game is a total non-issue and doesn't affect the balance of things.
Honestly, as someone who hates overly conservative play, I think the game is arguably better off with people hoarding gear sometimes. In some ways the presence of the most overpowered gear is a detriment. Sure it's fun to have and I'm not against any specific piece existing, but seriously, it's just not that important that you be able to get every last piece you know exists.
For me, gear whoring is much more annoying. One of the most disappointing moments in my recent CF playtime was seeing someone yell "BRACERS" over the cabal channel because Oh Noes they died with strange bracers and god forbid they not get them back. On a character that otherwise was well-RPed and cool.

It's well and good that you don't care about good gear on your char(which I find hard to believe) but most people do. Gear makes a huge difference in this game, especially the high end stuff. Hell people build whole character concepts around certain pieces of gear. Even tough char with good gear die if they actually use it and said gear is then redistrubuted so more then just one char can enjoy it. With gear lockers they have not only a full set of rare gear no one else can use but usually an inventory full of good stuff they can't even use. SO you are saying it's better when 2 people have all the good stuff instead of it being spread out over 10 to 20 people? How is that more fun for the game? You really think it would be fun to roll a sword spec and find out all the really cool swords are on two char who never pk so that you can't get any of them for months? Seems lame to me.

It comes down to this. I prefer gear to not be a huge factor. If gear hoarders take out the extreme best gear that is leagues better than the rest, then I'm okay with that. And the real truth is that very, very little gear in cf is truly game-changing. I do like that the game has a variety of gear strengths to compete for, but it doesn't bother me if the stuff that is way better than the next best things goes missing for a while.
Gear definitely shouldn't make or break your character. In my opinion if you're rolling a build that depends on a specific unique item you're planning to play too conservatively. CF is more fun if people take more risks and die more.
Finally, in today's CF I think there's too much of a concentration of the OP items. When there were more people stuff was more spread out. If there are 12 people you can fight, then two of those people having a bunch of ridiculous gear adds variety. But when only have 4 people you can fight, it's not as cool. Especially when you know that those 4 people are vets who will play too conservatively and never die. Because never dieing is how you amass gear sets.

38789, here is what you are saying.
Posted by Gaspar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
example: one fire sword spec has Lunn armor and two humansunders. he also carries 10 sets of Lunn armor and 20 humansunders.
and the 10 other giant sword specs only have midnight dragon armor and aldervari sticks.
humansunders giant rapes all 10 sword specs at once in one battle until they all rage delete.
are you sure this is what CF needs? one fagtron gear whore keister stashing all the good ####, keeping it from the others?

Well, my premise was that the gear hoarder was not engaging in PK much. The ones people typically whine most about are the heralds/uncaballed thieves like Thelana who don't fight much. Honestly if it's someone that is going to pick a fight with 10 other sword specs, then I don't care what else he holds, no.
I do think it's kind of a #### move to carry gear you can't use around to keep it out of people's hands who are your enemies, but whatever, I don't really care about that either. It's mildly annoying, but not the end of the world.
The relevant point is that true gear lockers don't matter because they affect all sides about equally.
|
38791, the relevance of an oxymoron
Posted by Gaspar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
you said it yourself, one affecting all.however, sides are irrelevant with the playerbase as a whole.
and "mildly annoying" lasting months doesn't come off as mildly annoying at the end. the affect compounds itself after time.
gear lockers suck. they are selfish cunts. and when they find a loophole in a sphere and class combination, it matters. IMMs don't do much when the shoe fits. we just complain later because we don't break RP for OOC topics. like being a gear locker.

As a whole, the playerbase cares way too much for gear and it's been my experience that RP tends to go out the window when gear is involved.
Keep in mind that these are the greatest adventurers in the world, yet some of them get bent out of shape because they lost their bracelet. What's with that? You can kill a dragon, but you whine like a 9-year old girl when someone grabs a ring from you?
The playerbase needs to suck it up. You're an effing Fire Giant Knight of Death, not Amanda, spoiled princess of the third grade. Suck. It. Up.

Two completely different issues.
1. Gear Locker who has a full set of rare/unique items that aren't used except for the to hit eq over and over while they yank it.
2. Person going OOC because they lost a piece of gear.

Love of gear is the root of all CF evil (or something to that effect.)
Whether it's post-death whining, gear-hoarding, or whining about gear-hoarding, I feel that too much emphasis is placed on gear by much of the playerbase.
As far as gear-hoarding goes. I'm figure "so what?" If strange bracers and other badass gear is in the hands of some Herald, it's not likely to be used against me. Seems like a fair trade.
The issue is coveting the badass gear to the point that it affects the quality of roleplay. If you break role to acquire a mask that allows you to detect hidden, you've missed the point of the game. (For the record, I don't think that the thing with trading the mask for charges was a breach of role in any sense.)
My point is that even the weakest newbie character that rolls out of the academy is a legend to Therans. They should act like it. Not complain that they didn't get the biggest piece of cake.

To be honest, I've been playing a non-Villager lately and finding it a bit of a chore. It's a whole other game.
It's entirely possible that my thoughts on gear are a result of gear being ultimately of minor importance to my characters (who tend to die a lot anyway and lose everything.)
I did have a nice piece of progging gear recently (the only other gear I've ever had that progged was The Skull Sword) and I was digging it until it got dent-destroyed by a mob.
Maybe I'll play something soon that takes a real interest in gear. I'll report back in my death thread and let you know if I've had a noticeable change of heart.

"Love of gear is the root of all CF evil"
I mean when you have supposed 'vets' saying they rolled chars just for specific gear, I mean really, do you need any more evidence of how self-serving some of the playerbase is?

I heart this comment. A LOT. I only wish I could get away with titling people "Spoiled Princess of the Third Grade" on CF.
|
38764, You can.
Posted by Stevers on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If Daev can title people spineless cocksucks, you can title them princesses of whatever grade you so choose
|
38767, Just for you I'll make a character to fit into that role and join Fort. That way the title can be Spoiled Princess of the Third Brigade. nt

Many, many, many years ago, when my youngest brother was really young and I was home from college for the summer (thanks for making me feel old, by the way)...he walked by my computer while I was mudding. Apparently I had stat-ed the char 'Rio' or something, and so he looked over my shoulder and said, 'Rio. That's a dumb name.' and walked off. I historied it. Zulg remembered the history...and it stuck for awhile as a "this is kind of a dumb name...not rule breaking...but semi-lame in some fashion" term.
I hadn't thought about that in ages. Maybe I'll start using it again. :P

Not Rio.
I don't think I was actively snooping him, but I had a who list up or was looking at his pfile stats. I say not snooping, because I don't know anything about the character Rio, except that my gene pool and I thought it was a lame name.

I was really upset about the name police catching me fore Morenol (I looked it up, it wasn't a chemical or nothing) and letting Morbo slide... but this comment has made me want to play again. Cyradia, I don't know you, but I wish you'd be a bitch like this more often.

I am now going to roll am orderly neutral human female warrior named Amanda with charisma as my primary and try to get the spoiled princess title. I'll give myself a role that says I'm from Aldevari (cause why not) and say I'm the younger sister of the princess that is there. I will proceed to demand shiny things from every player because I'm a princess, amd I will have a mercenary with me at all times which I order to attack things because I personally never fight. Naturally, I will only wear a gear which reflects my status, so dresses, jewelry and the like. I will rank sit at ten (probably by doing non-violent quests), which seems about the level of the toughest thing in Aldevari.
I think I could last maybe a week. :)

38771, Seriously, do this. But as an orc. n/t

You'll have to change the role around a bit, but it could work.
