36136, Weapons vs Defenses
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Was looking at adding a section on general weapon use for different purposes, but figured I'd ask for a "behind the scenes" opinion rather than just my own. I know each weapon vs. weapon can differ specifically, but in an overall sense, I wanted to check the following -

What weapons are best or worst to parry with?
What weapons are hardest or easiest to be parried?
What weapons are hardest or easiest to dodge?
What weapons are hardest or easiest to block w/ a shield?

Obviously, my own curiosity would be like a 1-10 order, but I think even a basic "Good, Average, Bad" rating would be good to throw in the wiki. I know it's been said that it's designed to be somewhat intuitive, but I'm no expert in weapons. My guess as to how easy or hard a sword/dagger/whip might be to dodge/parry/etc could be entirely wrong.

>What weapons are best or worst to parry with?
>What weapons are hardest or easiest to be parried?

It's a big grid based on your weapon & your vicitims weapon. Generally spear & staff are good to parry with. Daggers & whips are hard to parry with.

>What weapons are hardest or easiest to dodge?

Polearm & axe are hardest to dodge. Whip & dagger are easiest to dodge.

>What weapons are hardest or easiest to block w/ a shield?

Weapon type doesn't factor into shield block

are you absolutely sure that weapon type doesn't factor into dodge?

I would have bet lots of monies on flail being hard to dodge and axe being easier, and this is from experience using both vs. assassins and bards. And flail seem to own axe here by a wide margin.

add: even if you are instinctively sure, could you make quick check on dodge code?

here, it is fairly plainly said that a bug related to how hard weapons are to dodge has been fixed

Since I was away for two years, and haven't really played a warrior in almost 4, I'm not sure if things have changed since 2005. If waepons have indeed been made similar to dodge, that's pretty good news for axe users
36195, Zulgh could still be right

Sebeok's post doesn't say anything about weapon type. So it could just be based on weight or something. It does sound like he's talking about weapon type, but he doesn't actually say so explicitly.

Edit - after reading the whole thread it does seem more like it's type-related, but again he doesn't actually explicitly talk about any weapon types.

Apparently there is something hidden in the disarm table for dodging, so I'll update my statement...dodge is affected by weapon type.
36234, Hrm. My experience tells me axe is hopelessly easy to dodge
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
And that dagger is hard to dodge.. lol
36156, I don't think it's intuitive
Posted by Stunna on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
How hard of a time would you have trying to punch someone twice your size holding an axe in each hand that's so big you'd need two to hold it. It would be impossible... yet it happens on CF all the time.
36157, Real warfare is so different
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Real thing is that sword is the ultimate duelists weapon in reality. The heavy weapons are only meant for one heavy strike, and should not be able to parry at all, and the light weapons like whip and dagger are just meh. Also heavy platemail armor should own staffs, so the only viable weapons for actual combat would be light axes and maces, swords, polearms and spear as a defensive weapon. With sword probably rocking both offense and defense pretty heavily. Oh, and sword should be hella hard to dodge too.
36158, Exactly why I was asking :)
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I know I've gone up against dagger specs, and figured "hey, maybe I should try a whip or something, since it should be hard to dodge and I won't eat 300 concealeds". Or whether taking axes against a sword spec to is the best shot against beating parry, or if there's any sort of weapons that are good to use against that shield ded paladin.
36159, spear in real life
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
is considered the god of war and is without a doubt in actual (old time) warfare the most offensively oriented non projectile weapon. You may be able to deliver more force with a sword/mace/axe but reach is everything especially as you start increasing the number of participants.

also in real life a sword and shield is infinetly better deffensively then 2 swords. In cf of course they are more or less the same.
36161, Spear has been most used due to ease of use
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
arguably well trained and heavily armored forces are better off with long swords due to armor penetrating capability.
36163, That and spears have a nasty habit of breaking nt

d
36167, But they are low maintenance and easy to re-make
Posted by MoetEtChandon on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Just a long stick from a young, flexible tree with a sharpened, fire hardened tip will get you a long way with very little effort.

36166, having done large scale heavy weapons battles
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
to the tune of several thousand vs several thousand I can garuntee you that while big swords may have situational use... getting past the points of dozens of spears is a challenge.

Now if you can get opponents out of formation then spears get a bit weaker but if you have ever seen a wall of spears you likely want a really big shield and a lot of steam to get through to the people holding them.
36191, PBase must be up :P
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I can not remember the last time I was in a group on group battle with thousands of players involved!

On a serious note, yeah, mass combat was spear/bow for infantry and lance/sword for cavalry I guess for almost all typically victorious armies.
36193, SCA? or something like it?
Posted by Bajula on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Just curious.
36203, yep
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
did it one summer as Pensic is basically in my backyard. Tons of fun.
36205, rock on.
Posted by Bajula on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Not wanting to highjack the thread, but yeah that's one of the
things I still do. Never make it to pensic though. Too far for me
:) Its nice to have friends that will let you hit them with a
stick. *grin* and it does give a whole different view of things
in CF. I make armor as a side gig, and when I played a dwarf
some time back, Oh how I wish it was that easy to forge something.
*rofl* There are some nifty youtube videos where people put some
music to various war clips, for the bored...
Damn too bad I can't find the 'cool' one. Hehe

36214, I would love to do it again
Posted by laxman on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I bet there is enough cfers who do SCA and related groups that there could be a CF camp at Pensic.

I have a friend that grew up doign the stuff and he introduced me one summer. Unfortunatly after that summer I kind of got a job and having both time and money enough to do it again has been tough but next summer could be the one.

I did make a axe and mace which were fun in individual combat but without reach or a shield you just get skewered fast in the actual battles unless you want to wait forever for people to mount a charge.
36160, Not to mention getting dismembered 13 times in 1 fight

and then sleeping for a few hours and doing it all over again.
