35079, Grief
Posted by Beer on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
grief n 1. deep or intense sorrow or distress, esp at the death of someone 2. something that causes keen distress or suffering 3. Informal trouble or annoyance people were giving me grief for leaving ten minutes early come to grief Informal to end unsuccessfully or disastrously
You know, I don't speak of 'He's a griefer, he looted two pieces!' or 'He's a griefer, he level-sit!'
More like 'He's a griefer, each time he logs on he keeps fighting me until he can kill me, full/sac me and then when I regear, to kill me, full/sac me until I'm sick of it and log off'
Is that really necessary? Sure, it's a PK mud. Sure, it was worst it the past. Sure, you just quit/hide/level up/gang him. But what if I don't want to do that? What if I want to play now? What if I need to stay at that level to either know more of the class, gear up, practice some stuff or explore? Why should I be the one to change here?
What does spam killing someone and full saccing him each day will bring something more to this mud? Honestly? If it does, please tell me so I can RP something to it or just find something better to this than just learn how to regear faster each and every time so I can do something else of my logins.
I usually don't complain...usually I delete and move on. I'm a rage-deleter and I've worked hard until now to keep my char whom I enjoy around. But if that keeps on continuing, eventually I'll just leave. Oh no, that's not a threat to say 'I'm leaving, do something!' It's more like 'Hey, if you guys don't do something about such a silly thing, you might lose 1 or more players to this'
I've considered praying about it though I'd hate to be considered as a crybaby. I'm mostly asking for advices not to how to escape, I know thisĀ. I've played the mud for 10 years now on and off. No I'm not elite. But when there's a spamming decked to the god gating machine wrecking your world because you don't have enough HP/Gold/Movement to run around until he finish you off and destroy everything you've got, unless your build is able to kill him, you'll eventually die. (Or be able to hide somewhere which was able to happen once)
Trying to be most constructive here so please, constructive answers? Thanks.

But if someone does it to you, just post the unedited log on Dio's and let the playerbase regulate.

First off, don't say a word to them after the fight. If the person is wanting to make your life miserable, you are giving them satisfaction by voicing your frustration to them.
Second, you have to find a way to discourage him from harassing you. Drive him into a no-recall area. Surround yourself with mobs hostile to his class or race. Chum around with one or more people who can prevent him from popping in for a cheap kill or scampering off to safety. Learn how to dent or weaponbreak.
The third tactic is to avoid him. Go into an inaccessible area or an area he can't get away from if things go badly for him once. Guild sit, play an alt, quit and read a book.
You do what you got to do.

35094, If the answer is Quit...

Then it's the wrong answer.
At no point should logging out be the best solution for your particular problem. That, right there, is a great way to deter players from wanting to play.

I know for a rage-deleter, quitting can be a good idea. You know, a bad death? Quit. But quitting when you see X around because you know that once you leave your cabal or guild you'll get hunted and hunted until you die so you can regear completely since that douche sacrified all your stuff (Gee, what a long sentence), that's not supposed to happen.
I mean, when you buy a game, you shouldn't have to face a boss that will hunt you down at each level and spam-kill you to end all your lives...(I thought that analogy sounded good)

Beer feels he is being bullied, and he wants strategies. At no point in time did I say quitting out is the best way to go, but who are we kidding? We frequently witness "elite" players log out when they realize that they might actually be at risk of dying.
There is no reason newbies or mediocre players should be held to a different, higher standard that makes them vulnerable to someone who wants to make their lives hell. The immortals may eventually RotD someone they consider a griefer, but even if the staff considers the "bully" of being a griefer, there is no guarantee that anything will ever be done let alone do so in a timely manner.
The bugger of it all is that an experienced player could create a griefing threat in 20 hours: all it takes is a good full loot or someone who to help them outfit. Short of an IP ban there is nothing to prevent said bully from deleting and creating someone else to harass our victim if ever the immortals decided to cross someone they have determined to be an ass. The imms are only human.

The playerbase as a group are idiots for considering people who log out to avoid threats as elite.

Underdark works wonders for gating happy healers. Explore it. Lots of fun stuff down there. Chessmasters tower would work too. Best would be to get him into the strange room where he can't use any other skills then kick.
Organia or first circle of the inferno would work to.

I know that. I know all that. The point stays the same. That kind of behavior is tolerated? Is approved? Should we do that more? Should I do that more? Like we needed less players?

It's erratic.
Often it is frowned upon. Sometimes it is rewarded.
Case in point... plenty of druids who spam-killed orcs got leaderised and rewarded, but others who spam-kill others get bad titles etc.
I think there are two kinds of players: - those that think that they prove themselvevs great by spam-killing newbs, and - everyone else

Those druids may have gotten rewarded in spite of the spam killing. Or, alternately, your view of whether their behavior constitutes "spam killing" may differ from the rewarding immortal's.

Clearly my opinion differs from the rewarding immortal. That's not invalidating my answer.
What I call spam killing is a druid who kills that orc as soon as they are not a ghost, again and again, until said orc gives up.
There have been air offense shifters who did the same in the past.

I think that definition matches the staff's when it comes to "spam killing". So either the imm in question is fine with spam killing, or he didn't realize this was the method the druid was using to get his kills. If I had to bet, I'd say its the latter.
